Because like it or not, rule books are documents designed for print, so editions and reprints are the ingrained mindset and i dont think in this industry there will ever be a total move away from hardcopy. Certainly i think there is a huge scope for improvement here, and frankly im yet to see a digital version of a rule book done “properly” by that i mean seamless streaming of updates, decent search, built in calculators/table lookups, embedded video tutorials, supplement integration, seemless integration of faction overrides to core rules, inteligence of army list highlighting rules etc.
All of which is very doable it just needs a digital first/only games company to trailblaze it, as its a huge change in business model, when you effectivly get rid of the notion of editions and instead bring in continuous evolution, as whilst i would have no issue with paying to update to 2.0/3.0….n.0 versions of the rules, plenty of people would start crying DLC, would also make the traditional starter box less relevant, maybe what 4ground have done with fabled realms and made it so you have a build your own starter box, by picking the factions you want and bundling other stuff into it…
