I’d have to put my vote for 40k 6th edition on purely on game mechanics. Miniatures wise GW continue to produce stellar stuff, but damn those 40k rules… The game, in my completely subjective opinion, has gotten too big for it’s boots. 8th is a step in the right direction but still unwieldy. I think things like knights and flyers just look ridiculous on a 6×4 table and are better suited to a smaller scale like in dropzone commander. They can’t quite get the balance right between them being powerful but not too powerful vs other units and not so underpowered as to be “unrealistic” based on their role as a giant warmachine.
The game turns take forever and you are left sitting too long between turns doing little, if anything, bar removing models and the odd saving throw. It’s just dull. The whole you-go-I-go mechanic needs to go away and die.
I have many issues with the 40k rules but those are the low hanging fruit.
