Paying the VAT is not the problem. Making the backer responsible is the problem. This is almost a guaranteed snafu when the item ships. I have dealt with this via both Royal Mail and DHL over the years when importing stuff, and they make it as hard as possible to justify adding all sorts of ‘admin’ charges.
