Well as anyone who follows the Weekender forum threads will have seen, alongside wargaming I  have a (somewhat) unhealthy obsession with giant robots )especially those with a tendency to transform) and animation of a Japanese persuasion. What this translates as is I have over the years had oodles of gubbins that have gotten repurposed:

  • First attempt at a dreadnought for my Blood Angels back in  the day? Well I had a 1/144 Zaku II that I’d brought and built whilst we were living in Hong Kong around ’89-’92, and you can believe that bad boy got a slathering of paint, trying to do red over green plastic….
  • Whilst at university TK Maxx had some stupidly priced model kits one Crimbo, so in the build pile is the old return of the Jedi-era Millenium Falcon model kit. Still not sure if it’ll be parts or actually built as a YT-1300 but would make a cracking bit of scenery for Legion games (it’s either that or the Build Your Own ‘Falcon, because yes I was one of the idiots who saw out the whole collection…)
  • Transformers are a bit harder to do stuff with because, well, expensive, but the dodgy knock offs that the likes of Home Bargains & B&M have serve the dual function of providing lots of nice beefy guns and sci-fi mechanical gubbins. Thinking about it though, I do have a selection of parts left over from where I’ve upgraded or replaced bits using third party kits or Shapeways bitz….
  • Speaking of gubbins, my bits box still has some of the same Zoid parts the sainted Rick Priestley & co used to arm up the first scratch-built 40k tanks. Modern Zoid kits are a bit pricey, but who wouldn’t want to proxy their tanks with robotic wolves, spiders, sabre-toothed tigers and all sorts of other beasties? And if the dice are not in your favour just wind’em up (or turn on if you splashed out on a battery powered kit) and watch as you literally crush your opponents army 😀
  • Oh, and gashapon kits – you can get a LOT of mileage out of some of the anime inspired ones, either for weapons & gubbins from the mecha ones or effects bits from the Shonen franchises….
