As for basing… I reckon in a friendly environment it shouldn’t matter too much, as long as you aren’t taking the piss. But in a tournament environment, then yeah I could see how it would be important.

If every measurement was taken from the centre point of whatever base the mini is on, that perhaps could work. But then the rules would have to allow for that, as otherwise cases such as those already highlighted above occur and no-one wants that silliness to get in the way of fun.
