Soldiers aren’t square. In fact, they are roundish at almost every point, so squaring them up is virtually impossible as many an NCO can tell you.
In fact, ragged lines are far more common and realistic. Please observe re-enactors attempting maneuvers on anything other than parade grounds.

But should your OCD overcome you, sabot trays are quite acceptable. And have the added bonus of having a French word with a dual meaning, at least one of wish is distinctly military related. (I’m referring to Sabot rounds, not sabot as in the shoe, though shoes are of course important for armies.)
