My dining room table is a convertible pool/snooker table.  It is roughly 7’x4′ and I can easilt use it with a game mat without needing a topper.

I got it second hand off ebay a ew years back and including hiring a van to collect it, cost me around £1k. Its a lovely piece of furniture and it serves 3 functions, plus it is adjustable for height so I can play at it standing up or sitting down.

It depends what you consider pricey for furniture I suppose.  I don’t know what your budget may be?  There were cheaper styles available. £900 or so got us a very nice one with regency legs.
