Just a quick heads up – the other night, on a rare occasion of having my painting gear in the living room, my wife was asleep on the settee and I thought it would be hilarious to paint just one of her toe nails bright blue (and even funnier to then paint tiny little daisies just here and there). On waking, she was horrified (I think less with what I’d done and more that the colours were “flat and matt and lifeless”). Then she coated it in her (Daler-Rowney) artists gloss varnish, loved it, and demanded I paint the others.

Now the postie’s just delivered a couple of pots of “Pro Acryl” paints for me to try out (Army Painter’s red and yellow have always been a bit weak, and I’d heard great things about Pro Acryl) and she’s suddenly take a great interest in my range of paints. So much so, that she’s actively enthusiastic about me trying yet more colours (instead of complaining “how many paints do you think you need?” whenever another few pots drop through the door – because she mixes all her own colours when using oil paints).

So tomorrow is less of a “date night” and more “girlie night in” while she has her nails done in a variety of colours, each with micro-art.

I’m still not sure if this was a genius move to get her (even a little bit) interested in a tiny part of my “hobbying” or whether I’ve made a rod for my own back (she’s currently going through my paint collection, trying to decide whether to go with a “complimentary” or “contrasting” palette for her fingernails).

We’ve yet to see how hard-wearing gloss-coated acrylic paint is for fingernails – but so far it’s looking far better on her toes than the enamel-based nail varnish she’s being using for years! Not sure if this is a warning for the rest of you, or an idea to rack up a few brownie points that you’re welcome to…..
