    I’ve been busy designing my own buildings in FreeCad to be printed out. I have the overall structure of the building modeled including things like doors, windows etc but the outside walls are currently flat and featureless. What I want to try to do is add brick work, render and other such textures so that when printed, I get a realistic look.

    Having dug around the internet, I understand that texturing is not the correct term and that I need to apply a ‘displacement bump map’. I’ve found a web site that provides free displacement maps that I want to use but I now need to figure out how to wrap this onto the walls of the model. Here’s an example;

    I’ve downloaded Blender and I’ve been wrestling with this package. It’s bewildering in its scope and complexity and the learning curve is so steep to be almost impossible. Other packages, such as Rhino 3d, seem to be able to do what I want easily, but they’re in the region of £1000 for a licence and that’s a lot….

    So has anyone else managed to do this? And if so, what approach did you take? Or am I on the right path and just need to spend more time on it?
