Typically I’ll sit in the UHH and toss in my two cents at leisure for fun. Today I found a video on YouTube from EliteRPG that I feel hits with the same impact as the one done here with Mel the Terrain Tutor on mental health within the community. It might not be an easy watch for some but it’s worth pondering. We’ve gotten through pandemic lockdowns and this is just more reason to pull together and actually see each other as social animals. Hell, this seems like a good impetus to jump back into reinitiating the Snag-a-Normie event. What say you lot?
Re: the video
I was with the video until maybe the last 2 minutes. Due to the topic I think he should have restrained himself from all that self promotion. Personally I feel that devalues the whole thing a bit but that’s just me.
Re: snagging normies
Ever since I’ve heard about this way back when I was like “I don’t know normies.” Almost everybody I know has some connection to RPG, TTRPG or even miniature wargaming. And those few people I know who are not into it are usually people I don’t want to have in that “my space”.
But getting back to in person meetup surely will be something to lift spirits. At some undetermined point in the future. For some people.
I’m really not that sure about that for myself. Then again: I’ve always been a hermit in my own little shell.
Time will tell.
I need more coffee. It had been a long night.
At the risk of getting another wellness visit at 3AM…thank you to the admin responsible…my mental health has been in the gutter for WAY too long, so getting back into RPGs or social wargaming of any sort might help that a little bit, since the lack of human contact has led to a lot of the problems. But I’m with sundancer that a lot of the people I know are already involved in some aspect, but I am currently trying to get one of my friends into Kill Team as a way of spurring on my own hobby goals.
I agree that the self promotion was a bit much to take at the end. The overall topic I think was pertinent to looking out for your fellow human.
Perhaps it is the nature of gamers to live inside our heads that makes us different than the normies. Opening up the eyes of people to social play where we imagine together and agree on rule sets really is the name of the game. If we go beyond our hobby hideouts and get into the realm of “outside” maybe we can clear our own heads of what we collect that weighs us down as well as give others food for thought. I think more and more having others think may be a big ask in many cases as we seem to be in a digital Dark Age.
Thinking and more importantly critical thinking for yourself seems to be a virtue not being taught any more. You don’t always need to be absolutely pro or con something. You can have a mind of your own.
But that diverts from the topic.
We need happy gatherings. Places to relax and enjoy the things that make us happy.
Me personally is currently way to cautious in regards of potential harm that comes from mass gatherings. I wouldn’t enjoy being with a lot of “random people”.
