Update: Campaign Being Relaunched Later In March
The game allows you to play out any commando-style operations from World War II, be they Historical or a particular scene from your favourite movie. The game rules have been designed to be easy for you to get into but with plenty of depth for you to explore tactical decision making and narrative depth on the tabletop.
When you dive into Butcher & Bolt, you can either play single missions or venture into campaigns as part of their Operation Packs. You can play out games in Western Europe, North Africa, the Pacific, Eastern Front, the Far East and more.
Butcher & Bolt - Core Box // Lasting Games
Butcher & Bolt has been designed so it's easy for you to get started with their Core Box, giving you a great starting point. Because you can use literally any World War II miniatures that you have access to, you simply need the components for Butcher & Bolt and you can dive right in.
Your forces in Butcher & Bolt are always asymmetrical, matching the style of commando skirmishes that you fight out on the tabletop. You can play very small games all the way through to big games if you prefer. Equally, you will only ever need around twelve to sixteen miniatures for a "medium" force in the game, so it's not going to tax your hobby budget.
The Core Box (pictured above) comes with your core rules, quick reference booklet, order deck, tokens, roster sheets, dice, and plenty of activation cubes for you to use during gameplay. If you'd like to check out more from Butcher & Bolt, you can watch our interview below...

You can also check out a gameplay deepdive over on the Gamefound page, which contains more information on how a typical game of Butcher & Bolt will play out.
Operation Packs
One of the unique features of Butcher & Bolt is their Operation Packs.
Butcher & Bolt - Operation Packs // Lasting Games
Each Operation Pack has been meticulously designed and hand-crafted so that it provides you with an amazing narrative experience, either as part of a single mission or as part of a campaign. You will always have difficult designs to make as part of your games and with that in mind, have been designed so you can use a Games Master if you like, with additional details for those who take on the role. You can also play Operations without a Games Master easily.
Operation Collar // Butcher & Bolt
Operation Packs also highlight the key Fog of War mechanic present in Butcher & Bolt. Both sides will never have a full picture of what they are trying to accomplish and what events await them when the fighting starts. This means that the games that you play will be dynamic and interesting experiences where you have to think on the fly in order to achieve your objectives!
Operation Grey Den // Butcher & Bolt
You can see an overview of some of the different Operation Packs here (above and below). These are by no means all of the options available to you as part of this campaign. They range from single mission packs through to three and even six missions, which become twisting and intrigue-filled campaigns.
Operation Oak // Butcher & Bolt
As far as World War II wargames go, it's nice that we're seeing more skirmish games coming out which focus on the commandos operating behind enemy lines away from the main battlefield. 02 Hundred Hours certainly kicked things off and I think that Butcher & Bolt provides World War II wargamers with a different enough experience for it to be included alongside it as part of your collection.

FYI — the campaign has been canceled so it can be re-packaged and relaunched.
I saw that. Was nowhere near funding goal.
Looks a lot like 0200 Hours by Grey For Now Games.
In the spirit of accurate information: while the two games share the overall theme (commando style raids), the gameplay and the coverage are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
Many thanks Ben for the excellent and very informative article. Relaunching soon this month with renewed offering (incredible value!) and energy 🙂
