It's time for us to head back to the world of Kingdom Death: Monster here at BoW Towers for Lantern Year Three.
Watch Lantern Year One
Watch Lantern Year Two
Justin and Warren are joined by Chris Handley from Darker Days Radio once again as they hunt down another monstrous nightmare creature out there in the darkness.

I am freakin’ LOVING this game. Thank you for a new video so soon! I can’t wait to watch!!
I got excited until I checked the Kickstarter and saw that delivery is Dec 2020. Not sure it is THAT good to have to wait 4 years.
The core game ships next summer. 2020 is the date for all waves of the KS to ship. Read the FAQ on the KS.
!!!!!!!!
This goat had me worried!
I haven’t been this concerned about a goat since I fell over the wall at a Masonic lodge!
Is that the origin story of Beasts of War? 🙂
Love the game 😀 . Hate that frakking antelope A LOT.
Wow! That was an awesome fight. Could have gone so badly but you guys handled it well. The Saviour is cool. I wondered how they came into play. They totally fit with one of my favourite quotes:
“The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long.” ― Lao Tzu, Te Tao Ching
This has been one of the most enjoyable play through series I have watched. More! More! More! 😀
Thought that quote was from Tyrell in Blade Runner, thanks for educating me! 🙂
The Dice Gods not in your favor this year.
However not good with doing phases off camera for those learning the game.
Some we do on screen. It’s just to cut down a lot of what would be dead air making decisions and haggling. But the Settlement phase is simple, but the haggling between players can get complex.
I can’t wait I’ll you guys get to the surprise at Lantern year 4!!
Also guys, sorry if we messed up in places. Pay attention to how you build the decks and what trigger at the start and end of rounds.
having issues with my connection i’ll have to catch this tomorrow.
can’t wait
Watching these next two lantern years is gonna be great. I really must nag my friend to bring it back down to our flgc 😀 .
You guys were lucky with that Antelope. My group for this game were hunting it and we left it with what i like to call ” the toddler tantrum attack “. Damn thing killed 2 of the party by stamping up and down on the spot and screaming :'( , 2 party members heads then exploded 🙁 .
Lucky but also we messed up the deck construction. But then recording these videos in the space of a day and a half was hard going. We missed a few things but if anything I hope it is a demonstration of the game and also a primer on what not to forget.
Hey guys I have to say I actually like a lot of the fails in this, the reason I like it is because it is a more realistic demo. I a lot of demo always go like everything works perfectly and you don’t have a realistic idea of how the game goes.
I would prefer to see an imperfect game where despite of its failings you want to play it because of how fun it is. With the antelope going so wrong for everyone, you get an idea that one you can fail despite having someone there who has an expert in the game, but also that some times the dice are just against you.
Also I would have preferred to see the whole settlement phase because it is something good to have on in the background when I am painting. Length isn’t a problem if you will watch for like 30 minutes watching the party just running against the wall, rather than skipping out on the settlement phase. I would prefer to see the settlement phase as it is more interesting to me.
Anyway it is pretty interesting I have enjoyed watching that is for sure.
I too would have preferred to see the whole settlement phase!
How did you harvested the achantus without a scyhte?
It’s a 1d10 roll without the scythe, and 2d10 with it.
It’s pretty easy to screw up. Despite the actual rules being simple, the game itself is quite deep, there is a lot going on (and no quick reference sheet). Hard to both be a player and a teacher, so mistakes will happen. Trying some of the more complex fights like the Butcher and many level 2+ fights will leave you trying to manage multiple little odds and sods, other than your memory you have nothing to ‘remind’ you of these odds and sods.
People screw up in every game all the time, the only difference is that some people screw up in front of a thousand viewers online 🙂
Get some pin ups and you will roll more critical hits! 😛
We did consider running the game with me just operating the monsters and Warren and Justin running the survivors.
And also on that point, the game does support a “GM” run version of the game.
True. Then we played in hard mode last time
Yeah, that happens a lot. Like people who think if you have a tpk then you lose all your gear!
Did @warzan move twice the 2nd round of the showdown ?
at around 25:58
No it was just us optimising his move.
He triggered the trap as the first move of the turn and then moved again around the 26 minutes mark
Oh maybe… whoops.
First move at 19:50 ish
Great report. Makes me VERY tempted to go in on the Kickstarter.
What!? No pun about using your dart from behind? I’m disappointed. 😉
@warzan said : “Best not to end up in the rear…” Followed by : “Should I go again with my dart?”
Seriously though, it didn’t went as smoothly as last hunt! It’s really interesting to see the different mechanics from each AI deck!
This kickstarter needs to end so I can know how much money they are taking from me. I’ve already pledged and I keep having to increase for each new expansion. Merry Christmas to me!
This game is looking so good, I am thinking to go in on the KS.
that thing took some killing, a real fight for survival. without Chris’s guidance you would have learnt somethings the hard way and got trampled and stomped.
you were burning through survival points, wounds and founding stones pretty fast.
can’t believe your not dead yet. don’t worry kingdom death monster has lots of terrifying ways to die, it just hasn’t finished playing with you yet.
looking forward to seeing your entrails decorating the lonely tree for Christmas.
were did the links to the kickstarter go
This is such a great game, I am very glad you guys are doing this sort of play through. There is quite a lot to it and I think people are sort of intimidated by it, I know I was at first. We have played a few dozen lantern years in a couple different settlements with two groups of gamers, what a completely different experience each of those is. Love this game.
Really liking this playthrough!!
I’m putting my vote in for watching the settlement phase too 🙂
Finally got to see this episode… yeah I’ve had those fights too. Going round and round: survivors miss, monster runs, all play catch-up. It can be infuriating at times, then something amazing or unexpected happens and it makes it all worth it!
May e for future recordings: Settlement phase highlights would be appropriate. More editing in the back end though.
Have always been tempted by Kingdom Death but always put off with the investment, these videos have tipped the balance for me any my partner. We will certainly be backing this.
I like this game a lot and I’ve concidered to back it at KS. Than, I’ve checked custom clereance costs. Adding almost 200USD on top 250USD pledge is hard to justify for me. Greate vid about great luxurious game.
Last time, as the EU pledges were shipped from the warehouse in Germany (Ulisses Spiel) there was no custom charge to pay.
I’ve send question concerning this. If it will be like you’ve mentioned I might back it up.
Amazingly. This video has made me reconsider if I actually want to keep my KS pledge. Having watched the first three videos it just feels a bit repetitive towards the end. Especially with chasing that stag around endlessly.
All the cards are nice but I don’t feel there’s a lot that couldn’t be achieved with dice and tables? Am I missing something? All the extra survivor finds also appear to be just that. Extras. Ther are only a few monsters in the core box to fight. I know the minis look stunning and this is what’s keeping me hanging on but I look back to my warhammer quest role play book and kind of feel it does the same job for me?
What you are missing is that a) there are difference difficulty levels for each monster, which modifies not just their stats, but the number of AI cards in the decks and the ones that start out in play. These dramatically alter the tactics you have to use. Tables would not neatly replicate this compared to a deck. And the point about the decks of cards, as you saw, was that as the monster was injured it became more predictable (for better for for worse). The fact the hunt went round in circles is just bad luck – dealing with that is part of the joy of the game.
Also, as you will see in the next videos, is a change of focus in the group, as Warren and Justin realise there is more at stake than just their own character. There is a paradigm shift to thinking about the entire settlement. And that is where this game is different. While Warhammer quest is great and all, it is focused on singular characters, with rather basic enemy, horde, ai. This game has enemy AI which you deal with in a manner that is more like a puzzle game – almost like programming – which again gets the feel of hunting animals because the more you understand about the animal you hunt the better you can predict its actions. Coupled with the hunt and settlement phases that create an emergent narrative, ou end up with something that is an automated rpg experience, rather than a skirmish game.
I don’t know whether to thank you or not for posting the Let’s Plays for KD:M as it was the final thing that pushed me over the edge to pledge on the KS for it. Now I have to explain to the family why they can’t eat during January!
Continues to be a great watch, and the combat system has achieved something in terms of visceral description that I’ve not seen even in the best RPGs for that sort of thing. The custom injuries and combat events per-monster are just such a huge piece of narrative flavour, especially seeing that carried through into the mechanics.
