Finally, we’ll look briefly at the Guadalcanal Campaign, which started in the Pacific Theater of World War II 80 years ago this weekend (7 August 1942). This was one of America’s first large-scale experience in jungle warfare, especially in the Asia-Pacific theater, and would eventually see the first major commitment of units like the 25th “Tropic Lightning” US Infantry Division.
