About the Project

Lately, I've been running war games every weekend with members of the community via web conference. Players log on and play wargames with each other in real time, regardless of location, and we usually have at least a couple spectators as well. Many times it’s been Darkstar, but we’re also running wargames in Panzer Leader, Arab-Israeli Wars, and now Valor & Victory.

BoW/OTT community members @brucelea, @damon, @davehawes, and @rasmus have taken the plunge, leading battalions across thousands of meters of desert, starfleets in pitched battles across the heavens, or vicious firefights in the jungles of Vietnam, all without leaving the comfort of their home.

Hard-core, old-school command-tactical wargames can now be run (complete with spectators and recordings) in real time, with BOTH PLAYERS moving pieces across THE SAME virtual game board, thus maintaining player agency, speedy and instant results (no play by e-mail), interwoven turn sequences, any questions / feedback instantly received and addressed, and with the game being virtually recorded as it goes, a ready-made battle report can actually be created as we go.

All of this without the players having to install any new software on their computer, on any platform (PC or Mac). All that's needed is to agree on a time, a handful of dice, and a bellyful of courage!

Every weekend can now be a boot camp! All without costing me thousands of dollars in airfare, too!

Here is the replay from yesterday’s stream where Jenn and I sat down for a mellow, relaxed “couple’s hobby afternoon.”

I was putting paint on 3D printed M48A5 / Magach 3 in 15mm for potential Seven Days to the River Rhine games set in the Yom Kippur War of 1973.
My girlfriend was working away on some Halloween-themed jewelry.

Might make for fun listening while working on your own painting or hobby!

Join us for a mellow Sunday afternoon at the hobby table, where I finally put some paint on some models, expanding my 15mm Israeli forces with a platoon of “Magach” M48A5s.

Used extensively on the Sinai Front during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, these American-built tanks had been upgraded with the L7/M68A1 105mm rifle, new Continental engines and Allison transmissions. Such mobility was crucial in the wide, flat terrain that characterized much of the Sinai Front, where some of the heaviest tank combat since World War II would be fought.

These new models (3D printed) will be important for upcoming games of Seven Days to the River Rhine, pitted against pre-existing fleets of Egyptian T-54/55s and T-62s.

And who knows? Oriskany’s better half Gladesrunner promises to be working on some hobby as well!

The Assault on Peleliu Airfield - 15mm Wargame (Part 2)

In this episode we finish up the eight-player 15mm miniature wargame of Mark Ritchie’s “Tactical Combat” system, recreating part of US Marine Corps’ assault on the Peleliu Airfield on 15 September 1944.

This was part of the controversial assault on the Palau Islands, meant to secure the left wing of the upcoming (and much larger) assault on the Philippines. Although the necessity of the Palau Islands operation (and the sloppy haste with which it was prepared, launched and supported) has been called into serious question, what cannot be questioned is the courage of the Marines who landed there – and the grit, dedication, and tenacity of their foes in the Imperial Japanese Army.

This game tackles the assault of 5th Marine Regiment against the Peleliu Airfield (held by elements of 14th IJA Division), held at Das Krieg Haus, home of the South Florida Miniatures Gaming Club.

Battlefield America: Florida Hellfire - Operational Warfare in an Alternate 1988

Its a sunny spring day in an alternate-timeline 1988, where an isolated and far less powerful United States has been losing a 40-year Cold War with a much more powerful and organized Soviet Union and her many allies.

The war then goes hot as high-speed hovercraft of Soviet Naval Infantry, assault helicopters, and paratroopers erupt from the horizon. The unthinkable has happened – the Invasion of the United States is on.

It’s “Red Dawn” from another angle!

Battlefield America: Florida Hellfire is a new take on the previously-published World War 2.5 system, where we look at wargaming at the OPERATIONAL scale. Here the battlefield is the whole state of Florida, and the total forces commanded by both sides approach half a million men.

Do you have what it takes to pin four stars on your collar?

The fate of Florida, perhaps the whole Southeast, and perhaps the nation . . . rests in your hands.  Good luck!

Seven Days to the River Rhine - Soviets v. Bundeswehr - Part 2

We’re back with some some more old school 15mm badassery on a big physical table loaded with terrain … traditional wargaming at its best! This is the conclusion of Oriskany Jim’s set-up of “Seven Days to the River Rhine” by Great Escape Games. John Sowerby plays the West Germans and Jennifer Burdoo plays the Soviets in a 780-point game (8×4 table) set in a hypothetical 1988.

Soviet losses so far have been heavy, but a German Leopard 2 battle tank is also burning, along with at least one Marder IFV. And now the German commander is in Soviet gunsights!

Can the Russian spearhead yet break through and score the win for the glorious motherland?

Greetings all. Here is the replay from yesterday’s stream of HK Ops, our custom-designed Modern Military RPG. Join us as we welcome two new players to HK OPs, as well as dust off and update the characters for some of veteran players.

We also run a mini-mission to retrieve a missing cybersecurity team, vanished from an Estonian city on the border with Russia. Could the St. Petersburg mafia be involved? That’s just crazy talk.
