Infinity Spring Cleaning

About the Project
So…I've fallen in love with the world of Infinity. I've acquired a boat load of their metal. I've assembled quite a bit of it. I started and finished painting up most of the Aristeia! minis. However, to date I've not painted a single Infinity mini. Part of that is because I've been intimidated by what others have done and I want to do the quality justice. Part of it is that I've become a bit overwhelmed with everything I've purchased. So, here's to getting more of what I have assembled (because otherwise I'm likely to repurchase a model/box by mistake) and to getting some of it painted. While it's unlikely I'll have anyone to start playing this with for some time, now is a breather to get at least two armies painted up so that I'm ready to go once I can go out and play again.

Heroes on bases
So I got all the heroes I currently have primed and on bases. I had to fIght with my airbrush to get the primer to flow (tip: don’t try and use opened bottles of primer that have been sitting for a couple of years. Most airbrushes don’t like lumps).
ive learned that I’ll always have to touch up the primer after I get things onto the base as I always scratch some off. But that’s just par for the course.
I’m really looking forward to getting these painted up but I may work on the Combined Army bases and attaching them to said bases first. Then I’ll be set to just paint tiny fighting men, women, and creatures for a good while.
Hero bases
I’ll be putting all of the Combined Army on different bases but I painted up the ones I settled on for the heroes. Nothing fancy but I thought they match the board art pretty well. They’re from Death Ray Designs (I can find out which if anyone is curious) and went together well (though you can see some that I got completely off center).
Process: I faffed about a whole lot on these. Multiple steps that may or may not have made a difference. I started with a dark grey and then did dry brush runs with successively brighter grays. That was too streaky still so I then sponged on some sepia ink and hit the panel edges as well. Then I sponged on pale grey to create a variegated but not dirty look. Then edge highlights with a really pale grey, largely over the bits I’d just darkened with sepia. Finally the edges got an orange brown, then highlighted up to a pale yellow and then a wash over them with the original orange brown.
I’m pleased with the result. I had a similar experience with my Nomad bases where I did a whole mess of stuff, each step of which didn’t really work or show up much but taken together did create a depth/texture that I liked.
A productive afternoon
Whew. That took an entire afternoon. I forgot how long it takes to put minis together.
I also forgot how wonderful Corvus Belli minis are and what a joy they are to put together. Only one of these was even slightly janky and that was only very minor.
i am glad, however, that this was not my first Infinity experience since I knew what I was in for.
Still a bit more to do before I get to painting the bases and finally to painting the actual minis. I’ve learned that, for me, the best thing is to cut off almost all the tab on the feet until I have something that works like a pin…before I get to the painting. You can see some of what I’ve already gotten to in the pic.
Defiance is here! And all washed and shiny!
Just got my Defiance first wave and I’m so excited! Beautiful components, art, card quality, packaging…I could go on and on.
Had a chance to take an inventory (almost everything was there) and get them scrubbed and rinsed (I keep a used head for my electric toothbrush around just for this purpose).
Basing and painting Defiance will be my big spring project—fitting that we’re a year on and I’m set to do another Infinity spring clean. (I do plan to paint up my Relic Blade minis before that though—they’ve been waiting patiently and deserve some attention.)
Objective Markers
Got these from CustomMeeple ages ago. Finally got them assembled and painted. This has definitely been a spring of cleaning for me.
Pano, and thereby Icestorm, is finished!
Whew! That was a long haul (okay fine, only two months but that felt like ages) to get to this point. I learned a lot and definitely improved some as a hobbyist–first time really doing anything other than grit/texture bases. When I started this spring clean I really was just hoping to get my minis assembled but this was a great excuse to get some starting armies ready to go. I shall confess, however, that I’m probably going to take a break from Infinity for a bit. Maybe revisit Mythic Battles where the minis aren’t so detailed that I feel obliged to paint them to as high a standard as I can achieve. We’ll see.
I’ll probably go back later to paint the Kamau’s faceplate black. I find it annoying that CB isn’t consistent in their art but I’ve settled on faceplates as a way to differentiate the sectorial armies. I’m going with red for Neoterra (mostly–my Swiss guard is still blue), green for Acontecimento, black for Varuna, and blue for Military Orders and for Svalerheima/Winterfor. Obviously I’ll throw in appropriately colored accents as well. Sidenote: I’ve decided that all Pano swords will have a red gleam regardless of sectorial.
Overall, I’m quite pleased with the result (although my photography still sucks. That may have to be my next project: taking better pictures).
Now to get a game in!
Working on white
I decided to do the white panels on the armor and I’m glad I did. It really breaks up the blue and keeps it from being overwhelming.
Lots of blue
After all my careful Work with the blue I was nervous about the recommended final wash with Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue I should not have been as it really smoothed things out and tied it together
Now to decide whether or not to put in the white panels that CB have envisioned. Then some black and white on the clothes and finally the red and green for Neoterra and Acontecimento. I’ll likely leave the finer details (logos, numbers, etc.) until some future date like I did with the Nomads.
