Imperial Assault – Dusting Off a Forgotten Project

About the Project
I'm trying to make myself work on the mountain of projects in my collection. As I was looking for what to work on for the 2022 Spring Cleaning Challenge I saw my collection of Imperial Assault figures in various states of progress. At this point it's going to require a lot of cleaning as well as painting, not to mention trying to complete the collection before it's too late.

Obi-wan Kenobi
I don’t think I got the browns quite right. I used Vallejo Stone Grey for the lower robe and Khaki for the cloak and then Army Painter Strong Tone wash over the rest. I think it came out ok.
The hair was Vallejo White with AP Light Tone over top and I think it came out really well, especially from a distance.
Finally, Vallejo Sky Blue for the lightsaber and Vallejo Black for the base.
Overall not a bad result, and a decent model to paint.
Sentry Droids
So I decided to keep this paint job simple. A base coat of Vallejo Black, heavy drybrush of Reaper Tarnished Steel, trim of Army Painter True Copper, and then a unit mark of Vallejo Neutral Gray or Reaper Heraldric Red in order to differentiate between basic and elite units. Top it all off with an Army Painter Dark Tone wash and I’m calling it done.
Finished Rancor
So I will be the first one to say that I’m not very good at painting and probably rely too much on washes, but I think it worked here.
When choosing colors I sort of just eyeball it when choosing the colors I want to use and this ended up being a lot more red than I was expecting, but I like how it works with the claws, bones, and teeth.
Washes were kept simple, Army Painter Red Wash in the mouth to darken up the tongue. And the Dark Tone over everything else worked out really well with the colors.
Finally, just plain black for the base really cleans it up and lets it shine.
Beginning the Rancor
Got some paint on the Rancor. It’s a bit cumbersome and heavy so it wasn’t working to use my paint handle, but that also requires a lot of touch ups from rubbing the paint off as I go. Oh well, not too big a deal as it’s still early.
Priming Test - Jet Troopers
So in my previous entry I showed the tool I created to support the Jet Troopers while priming. Honestly it worked great. There’sa little bit of area on the bottom of the figure that didn’t catch much primer, but let’s be honest that’s normal. Regardless, very happy with this setup.
Problem Solving - Jet Troopers
So I was getting ready to prime my recently cleaned miniatures and I realized that the Jet Troopers were going to be a bit difficult to get all sides without having them mounted on bases. But as they come with clear flying rods I wanted to keep that as well. So I came up with a support structure to get them off the ground.
I took some heavy pinning rods and cut them to about 2.5”. I put two bends in one end to help keep them upright and then stuck them through an old cereal box flap.
I used some heavy packing tape to keep everything in place and then stuck the Jet Troopers on them in order to prime them.
i think long term it will be good to hold on to the rods to reuse them.
Getting Started
So an easy first step was to clean the painted models. I took anything that was still raw plastic or that has primer only and put them in warm soapy water to soak for a while. I used a standard bucket as there were large models and I wanted to make sure everything got covered. I would periodically spin the bucket to agitate it, but not too rough.
After I woke up I poured the figures and water through a colander to get them out of the water, and then used the faucet sprayer to rinse the models and get any soap off.
Finally, I laid them out on a beach towel and covered them to dry them off, and then let them air dry for another day.
Assessing What I Have
So I’ve decided I’m going to do video updates periodically in addition to pictures. Today I’m starting by looking at what I have and the condition it’s in.
