About the Project

I'd never played Mordheim. I surprised myself by playing Mordheim with people I'd never met at a gaming club. Mordheim caught my imagination when I got back into the hobby and when I look at fantasy, scratch that: ANY miniatures I often think 'Oh, that would be good in a X warband for Mordheim' before anything else. Every model is a Mordheim model? Let's find out. Header image from https://www.deviantart.com/horizonpointshawn

When I first saw the Kill Team Inquisitorial Agents box I was struck by how many of them could immediately pass for fantasy figures. The robes scream chaos cultists and that means Cult of the Possessed for this project. I bought a box and forgot about them for a few months, until the subject of Mordheim came up in a video of a plucky young YouTuber called Because of Dragons when I mentioned my ambition in the comments. So, after a spring clean, it was time to press on with this idea.

The first model that I went for was the body that could make the Interrogator or Enlightener Agent. I preferred the look of the Interrogator agent, but that has a gun in one hand, so I simply swapped that arm out for the one for the Enlightener Agent that had a sword. It wasn’t until much, much later (during painting) that I realised that arm has much more of a wizards sleeve, while the arm holding the book looked like it could belong on a tuxedo. Never mind.
I liked the look of the candle on the shoulder, but it did make the composition of the model look unbalanced to me, so I decided to add something from my bits box. After trying another candle (too much) I went for a crow or raven (what am I, some sort of ornithologist)?

I painted him up in classic red and black chaos colours, which matches the colour scheme that I chose as a teenager for my ‘Disciples of the Red Redemption’ regiment of renown . When I was finished I realised it also matches the box art colour scheme which disappointed me. I wanted to disguise the fact where these miniatures came from, but there’s no way I was going to strip it and start again.

Next I moved onto the body that’s for the ‘Questkeeper’ or ‘Pistolier’ agent.
I blue tacked on a couple of different arm options:

  • The other sword arm for that I hadn’t used above, paired with an arm from Anvil Industries from my bits box.
  • The arms for the power sword that’s meant to go with the body

Neither of them tickled my fancy, and I ended up with a ridiculous bell / flail combo from the GW flagellants box.

The ‘Mystic Agent’ caught my eye next. I really like the hooded, blind folded head.

I didn’t get any photos of this pre painting, but the arms are from Anvil Industries again.

To paint these I shifted onto mainly brown gowns, with off white accents. In my mind these are chaos monks, so they should look like monks.

The ‘Death World Veteran’ comes with hand weapons that look totally fine as is, however I was now addicted to kit bashing. I replaced right hand holding the halberd with an empty hand, to which I added a scroll (from a Frostgrave wizards sprue I think).

Finally… the gun Servitor. My son had taken a fancy to this model, and wanted to keep it as was. After to chatting to him, I decided to try my hand at magnetizing that arm so we could swap out the 3 gun options and even replace it with a non sci fi option for my needs. This was easier to do than I anticipated, although my bits box let me down. I had to arrange a trip to “Graham’s Wuerkshoppe” : an Aladin’s cave of second hand models and bits in an industrial estate in Gateshead. After about 45 minutes in there, shifting through boxes and drawers I came home with 5 options : 10 pence a bit.

I’ve no idea what kit the arm I used originally came from, but it seems to work. I a painted this up with it’s pneumatic tubes painted in a glossy pink, suggesting intestines rather than industrial. There’s no getting away from his metal clamp hand, but a ‘giant claw’ is one of the mutations available to the Cult of the Possessed, so I think it works.
