Happy Sunday folks! 😀
Good morning, and Happy Sunday! (ehh … Saturday night?) 😀 😀 😀
Why don’t you put a play button on the xlbs, I haven’t been able to watch it for six weeks now. Everything else plays fine except the xlbs……..
What device are you trying to watch on?
There is definitely a play button on it mate and folk seem to be able to watch it fine 🙂
Afternoon and Happy Sunday
All this talk about BOW 2.0 …. It’s a myth I tell you … a myth !!!!!! 😉 😛
My reaction has nothing to do with Warren taking first comment , yet again …….honest
That is a bit of a rum do, yes.
Happy Sunday everyone.
Really liking what you are showing of the new website. It’s great to see a site being developed with the community in mind.
I especially liked the project segment today. What are you guys thinking for the photo size limit or are you looking at having another site host the image/video and have community members post links?
I would happily help out as a curator.
Not sure on any size limits yet mate, but will be higher than current limits. We may have some fancy ways to remove the issue of size limits all together.
Is there a way that the inline photo on a page that are usually lower res, stored on your servers for speed and permanence, can link to an externally stored higher res photo that is shown when inline is clicked on?
Already does that and both are stored on our platform and cdns
Unlikely to increase file seizes initially, mainly as 5mb is plenty unless you want to use 20mp images but bit pointless as they get scaled down anyway…
Happy Sunday!!
1. Isn’t calling it XX 2.0 a bit out of date and vary ‘noughties’?
2. Wasn’t the last big upgrade to BoW a few years ago called “BoW 2.0”? So that makes this 3.0 – or to match Warrens love of dungeon crawling terrain “BoW-2.5”?
I look forward to Caesar’s first NSFW* Justins and Dragons… !?
* Not Suitable from Warren.
This year’s Salute for me is definitely going to be about terrain, especially a couple of mats multipurpose enough for a few eras and systems; if they’re double sided then even better.
Happy Sunday!
So the new website is almost a new social media site for gamers?
Interesting approach. Sometimes I wonder how some of those businesses make a profit, their storage costs must be horrendous, especially for Facebook, which never seems to forget a thing.
In truth it’s closely based on the architecture we already have in place (we already store quite a lot as it is) this in an exercise in structuring it and making it more browsable and discoverable.
So indexing links then.
No everything is already indexed as warren said more to do with making it usable to users, that and responsive design to work on devices better, oh and the minor issue of swapping out the platform architecture to something more adaptable
Quick question on the Project side of things – inspired by @oriskany
If a site user creates, for example, an army of 15 mm WWII Germans, will it cope with it being for Army lists in Flames of War, Battlegroup and any other rulesets produced for that scale?
Currently projects can be attached to a single entity in each of the categories (game, company, range) this is just to reduce projects spamming across lots of areas and to keep them focused.
We will probably have the curation team expand projects across multiple areas where it makes sense. 🙂
For a search engine on phones and tablets will there a voice search like “Hey Ben show me stuff on the Peloponnesian War or “Ben, show me the cheapest flights to a bootcamp”?
Lol 😀
but when you’re sleeping and you hear Ben chuckling from the speakers on your pc of phone that will be a lot creepier than Alexa
im up for the salute meet up. cant stay to late because im leaving my six year old with his nan this year. but ill be there
In regards to gaming in the gaps ICE when publishing MERP (Middle Earth Roleplaying) and Rolemaster produced supplements/ campaign packs to cover all of Middle Earth. This meant you could play in the world and but keep well away from what went on in the main books gave the DM much more freedom when running the adventures
Bon Dimanche
Seems a shame that online retailer can’t help out with a list of the products that come out.
Over time that is going to be a bear to maintain – don’t envy the curation crew at all.
I know that the product name of Warhammer 40K: Conquest has been used twice, which is gonna cause some confusion – I came for the card game by FFG, why am I seeing a partworks that got put on hiatus.
We will not be maintaining individual products
Only Games and Ranges
The public/private project feature together with the project element/building block CMS feature is very cool. I presume that new elements in a public draft can be worked on in draft mode until released?
Extending this, will it be possible to make the visibility more granular… having elements within a public project that remain private (e.g notes/comments/to-do)?
Well look into that as upgrades after launch, but yes we are on the same wavelength on this 🙂
Damn! I was looking at this all wrong….
Thanks for pointing out this is a CMS, I was thinking along the lines of another type of application but it all makes sense now.
Excellent… takes time, and I love the CX thinking behind this, helps if you eat your own dog-food – i.e. are a typical user yourself.
Next bunch of user stories I’ll chuck at you would be local community support – for gaming groups such as…
* as a gaming group leader I want to be able to create a BoW group I can invite my members to so that I can give private project permissions to the group
* as a campaign organiser in my club I want to be able to create a campaign project so that I can manage all the resources, logs and results in one privately shared space.
* as a gaming group leader I want to be able to publicise my group so that I can attract new members through showcasing our activities
Thanks for another excellent update about 2.0 – the potential to have all the geek adjacent projects in one place is pretty freaking exciting. I can see me having my next larp costume log running alongside my next army plog and possibly a hub for the rpg campaign I’d be running.
I’m a librarian with a fair bit of archiving experience so I’d take great joy in helping with the curation side of things… arguably too much joy tbh
A very happy sunday to all of you at Beasts of War, and to every member all across the world!
I had a busy February and March, so I watched two month worth of Weekender and XLBS in two weeks. Oh man, what prizes I have missed! Now finally I am back on schedule, and it’s like a long awaited arrival back home for me.
Shame the meetup is on the Saturday night as I doubt I can make it after the show, was hoping for something on Friday before. Look forwarding to Salute and maybe saying hello to a few of you. Great show and hope you are having a good weekend.
List for me is
Terrain, mostly trees
Games, maybe Blood Red Skies, Mythos and whatever grabs my attention…… maybe Starwars Legion
Because Gamemat.eu is not at the show I have already ordered 2 of the double-sided 6×4 mats
@warzan it wasn’t condoms that people shoved up thier nose when I was a teen, but rubber bands and those long balloons…..and that was about 30 years ago.
I remember it being those thin flexible glowsticks about 16 years ago… What if this means that there’s now a shortage of condoms, and the teenagers doing this will end up with more pregnancies, so there will be more idiots to get caught up in the next generation of stupid challenges, further reducing the availability of preventetives and exponentially compounding the problem every 16ish years…
This project seacrh thing sounds awesome. I hope we will also be able to filter by factions and I know I’d love to be able to search tutorials for colour or effect keywords when I’m having issues with something tricky. I’m not sure how that could be implimented.
As to rating tutorials and seeing who has the highest rating, will it take into account quality over quantity? If somone produces 200 guides and only 1 person likes each, but someone produces 19 and 10 people like each I hope there is some way to reflect that the 19 guys work was valued more.
Any idea the scale of work the curator thing will be? I often find free time at work so if its something I can dip in and out of and not have take over all my free time, and I can afford to ignore when I get a busy few days then I’m interested. I’d assume it’ll be a lot busier while its initially being set up though.
Thank you for the kind words and thanks again for the golben button.
I really like the direction BoW is taking with the new site and I’m looking forward to using the new projects feature. For sure I’ll be QR-coding my storage boxes like there’s no tomorrow!
“Hobby social network that is not Facebook” nails it. Facebook has the privacy issues, but also the fact that it is all based on feed of what is latest makes it non-ideal platform for things like project logs. And navigating all the different FB groups is such a mess.
Justtin the closet Horus worshiper that could explain the hair then?
I am loving the look of the projects page. Here are a few thoughts:
Following on from Justin comment re armies and being able to scan an army QR code at a tournament. I can see these being used at conventions, so if you, a group of friends your club or even a start up company are putting on a demo/participation game at a convention, you could use the QR code so visitors/potential participants could scan the code to find out more about the game, whether the game is the kind they want to participate in and even write a review of their experience.
I think the creation page of project pages is great with us being able to format the look of our posts, my only concern is that now you have made it so easy to add imagery videos to post is it now going to be harder to “police” the use of IP protected images/logos and videos? Anot her job for the curtain team.
Finally a personal one for me, the facility to label your projects as current, completed, on hold and cancelled could be rather embarassing as I know I will have far far more cancelled and on hold projects than current and completed. I am sure that I am not the only games butterfly here.
Really looking forward to the launch of new site, the more I see the more I want to get involved.
Hey @elysium64,
You could just leave a project active, but I don’t think putting a project On Hold or even Cancelled would be that embarrassing as once the system is up and people have had time to use it I’m sure everyone of us will at least put something on hold.
I have LOADS of things on hold. It’s just the nature of what we do as projects can take weeks maybe even years for some of us (holding hand up right now).
I think it’s a good idea for us to mark what the state of a project is. I’m trying to put myself into the shoes of others browsing projects and I think I would really appreciate being able to filter projects by Complete for example.
We always trying to think of how the authors/users of the site will use it balanced with how others (let’s say lurkers) can get benefit from just browsing.
Hi @lloyd,
If I finish an army, closing the project, and then a year latter want to add another squad, is that a new project?
Just set it back to active mate 🙂
It is alright @lloyd, I was kinda joking on that bit, I actually like the idea as it will help me keep tabs on what I am doing as well as remind me of what paints I used on older projects
DND Beyond is a good resource however you don’t get everything (with a free account) unless you purchase the rulebooks and get a sub to DND beyond. It is also a licensed product (DND Beyond was developed by Curse) so if you purchase the digital rules and DND Beyond fails you will lose those books.
In the Netherlands they have build a site called Catawiki. The site has 2 sides 1 is Veilingen(auctions) and 1 is Catalogus(catalogue). You can choose languages when you enter the site.
In the Catalogus side you can enter your collection and you can help to expand the catalogue by adding items that are not yet in the catalogue. You can choose too have you collection public or private. You also can see what other collectors have and can have a zoeklijst(searchlist) these means that if someone on the site puts your search item for sale you get an email so you can maybe buy the item if you like the price and condition of the item.
Volunteers(beheerders) check if the items are correct and try to keep the catalogue in order.
There also shops, a forum and beurzen(fleemarkets, specialist markets etc.).
BoW sounds like it has potential to be something really cool, and pretty unique.
It could in effect be a complete social media platform built around the hobby.
I also think, in the long run, that could have application away from this specific hobby.
I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you this, but you’ll need to be mindful of GDPR compliance as you build this. Sure you already are all over that.
Also, my wish would be that as much of the functionality as possible is accessible for people who do all of their internet on phones and tablets. Like me.
Hey @tachycardia, everything is being built with mobile in mind right down to iPhone 5 res (320 x 568).
It’s one of the reasons developing a new site like this takes a lot of time.
I can spend ages making sure what we are doing works across a range of resolutions and devices and on a site with this much scope that becomes a massive task.
I’m sure after lunch we will still find areas to improve for mobile users but the whole site will be on a better architecture setup and we can invest more time making tweaks going forward.
I think you will enjoy the new site a lot on tablets etc.
Happy sunday Great show guys the BOW 2.0 is sounding good just give me a year or two to get it right mentily when this Start’s up.
Happy sunday! The next step for BOW sounds very big. But i really like the idea of possibility to keep tabs on your projects.
So Sam is gonna be drunk…hmmmm well i think I might bring a bottle or two for you guys at salute. I have no buy list for salute, but 4grounds is possible gonna take some of my money ;D but im definitely up for at a meetup Saturday ;D
@warzan really looking forward to BOW 2.0 and the proposed features.
i am sure that im not the only one who would probably like to change their name on the site as mine was generated 6+ years ago and nobody can ever remember or get it right plus id like to think ive become a bit more sensible since then. Could their be in the personal account side of things, an option even if its a one time thing or limited ability to enable a change of username? since mine was generated years ago ive got myself a domain name for a blog etc and id like to get everything the same matching if possible so its easier to remember and switch back and forth for content reference etc.
from what you describe today im liking the proposed project side of things and can see it being an invaluable tool if like me you are coming back and forth from unforeseen breaks.
i was wondering though will there be an indication of how many community spotlight/ golden buttons the user has been awarded. you know a bit like the ebay feedback score in brackets or something like that would certainly spur me on to try and win one. it would also show the people really committed to good content and check out
We may be able to do the username thing manually as a tech support option at some point. (Wed need to look into it and we are a bit up to our eyes just at the moment) but I will have it looked into mate.
And yes going forward golden buttons will be more integrated into the platform along with other achievements and unlocks 🙂
Happy Sunday.
I am looking forward to the updates you have talked about. The project logs and easier searches will be amazing. I am wondering though if you have the storage space for all that info. Losing all that for someone would suck eggs. I know that I have lost tons of pics over the years due to bad practices and shit machines.
Ben Headroom would be fan-frickin-tastic. I want one for my home pc, like now. But I have wanted bobble-heads of all you guys for years. John on my paint desk, Ben on my bookshelves, Lloyd on my pc, Sam can fit anywhere, and I think Warren and Justin would be comfortable in the closet……
Great show thanks
I’m actually really looking forward to the project thing, first it might for once keep my hobby organized, but also, I think it will be a great motivator to have everything laid out in front of you. I’ve had a period just now when I haven’t done any brush painting, and made a few scale models instead, and I am easing my way back in doing some vehicles, just airbrushing, so I can find my mojo again. I bought a legion air speeder just for this.,
But if I had an ongoing project all laid out, so I could see my progress already, I do think that would help keep everything interesting along the way.
BoW 2.0 sounds more amazing with every update. Can’t wait to get going with it!
@warzan Definitely happy to help out with the curating side of things. I’ll drop you a PM.
One potential option, a NSFW/Adult content flag for projects to allow for more adult discussion.
Guys great show. Looking forward to BoW 2.0 and next weeks report on Salute, wish I could attend but for now will have to live vicariously through you guys. If I attended, I would be looking for 1940 German motorcycles in 23mm and AWI Cavalry in 23mm.
Liking the sound of the new website, especially with greater integration of the community. I’m looking forward to the launch of the new/updated site and having a good mooch around it.
The Project Logs is exactly the tool I am looking for as I’am just about to start a few largish projects over the year and this is the perfect way of keeping track.
The project part of the new site sounds great, cant wait to give it a go!!
@warzan – May I suggest for BOW 2.0 if the avatars can have Country Flags and Badges? This would make easier to identify where different members are from and the Badges could identify if someone is a Golden Button Winner, or Curator or other site achievements. Finally, if you mark favorites so you can mark posts etc.
In time (after launch) we will work on these items 🙂
So… I just clicked on a link by mistake and lost my post 🙁
I love the project section you guys are doing. The comments will make the biggest impact for me that these will thread throughout the project rather than be another post and get answered further down.
I cant wait to transfer and change up some of my past projects to archive them properly.
The great thing I seen was files along with the project but I would appreciate a note on copyright on a help link in that section. This is a thing that I am totally scared of. (not from personal experience but that of a big company in our industry that will remain nameless) I have loads of PDF and DWG created by me but inspired by an IP. I would love to share them for free to see if anyone else would like to alter or change them or just try it themselves. I just don’t know where the line is on this and would like to avoid you (BOW) and me getting into hot water over it.
Also you may wish to include a CC or similar licence so these designs could also be used but have to be attributed to the creator. (I don’t know how any of this works). I do think this would be necessary for any site going forward but also with the push in the community for doing things digital.
As always look forward to hearing more and getting my hands on it! @warzan get you whip. (I am sure you have one)
Ben as Clippy:
“it looks like you’re starting another Wh40k army.
Do you want to ….
– finish off one of the other twenty
– plough on cos why the heck not”
Great show guys.
The new project stuff looks like everything I’ve been wanting for a long time. Threaded conversations, granular search and “all in one place” projects have been on my wish list for a while.
It will be interesting to see what form WAYPN takes in the new system – there’s potential for it to be more of a “feed” that is automatically generated from public projects. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, but the ability to come to BoW and simply click a “show me the latest painting stuff” or “show me the latest 3d printing projects) is intriguing.
Also, the commitment to managing arsehats is commendable. Not easy, as once you have a system in place for rewarding people, it’s not uncommon for people to try and game it to become “hobby gods” and “experts”. I trust the BoW community will fight to avoid this!
I’ll be demoing ArcWorlde at Salute, so hopefully I’ll meet some of you fellas there.
Really excited about the look of BoW 2.0. I’ll be happy to volunteer. I’ll drop you a PM @warzan
Happy Sunday All!
Always leaves me scratching my beard and going “hmmm…interesting” as I try and process everything my mind has just ingested. Great fun and wonderfully thought-provoking.
I am looking forward to 2.0, I have to say when I first came to the site I found it awful to find stuff, but have gotten used to it! For a while my main consumption here was linear, and this is something the site does quite well, and something I hate about Geek N Sundry and a few other internet (I guess networks is the word?) sites do. I like to know chronologically all the video content, and being able to go through, skip past the stuff I’m not interested, watch what I am interested in, and know when I look tomorrow, the list is the same, but maybe some new stuff on the front. I hope there will still be a place for something like that.
The projects stuff overall looks great, a huge improvement, and really a nicer interface as well. I am curious, will you have a catch-all project type? Say I want to do homebrew rules, could that be a project and what would it fall under? I can imagine there will be something that there might not be a good category for, or is that a sign it shouldn’t be in that section of the site?
Tech question on 2.0, just out of curiosity, is it based on React?
I think some others have alluded to this (especially regarding WAYPN) will be able to have more cases of posting something once, and having that post linked in multiple places? I’ve seen it a lot on the forums where it makes sense to post something in your own hobby log, but also in WAYPN and maybe a thread related to that specific game as well. You get a lot of effort in duplicating that post, and not collating comments from different places on that post. On the other hand, maybe it makes sense because the comments in the WAYPN section might be about the painting, and in the game section perhaps it’s about your list choices.
From what I’ve seen of DnD Beyond, it’s a great resource. My DM Steve utilises it to create content, but also to purchase content. He payes for the books as well as an ongoing subscription, which he reckons is reasonably priced, For the money though, a DM has access to a useful and flexible tool: one can easily look up rules from any content. Characters can be created and modified, again able to pull in rules and abilities from any official published sources. Subscribers can also give access to others (up to about 5 others I think) which means the DM’s players can access the same character creation tools.
The project blogs system for BoW 2.0 is exciting! Funny, I thought Justin’s idea for the QR code was already part of the plan for that service: lure more traffic into the site, more potential subscribers. It’s good marketing!
The visibility of project through the profile is great too: I’ve never been a big fan of the one long personal post which details every project a person has worked on… too much of a pain in the arse to trawl through to find particular things, or to manage if you want other browsers to be able to find particular topics you’ve done.
It sounds as though however that the Costs Of Doing Buisness at BoW have gone up… and all this work to upgrade to 2.0 isn’t going to come for free… is it time for an increase in subscription? Or will BoW raise further revenue through advertising? Or both?
Hence why bring more traffic into the site through alternative means is necessary…
I’m looking forward to 2.0!
BoW 2.0 sounds awesome boys!
The new project input system looks so much easier and intuitive to use. Tipping there’ll be more content coming in because of it.
Although, wouldn’t the Ben Clippy be called the SFA, Sexy Furious Assistant?
Please stop by and talk to James with The Drowned Earth at Salute if you can. It would be greatly appreciated. The Kickstarter for it might be shipping this week, so an update would be great.
Thanks for another great XLBS 🙂 BoW 2.0 is gonna be friggin’ amazing
I have a long list for salute that’s far longer than NY wallet is deep! But some of my highlights:
Deep cut studios / game mat eu
Perry for some more Napoleonics
Arcworlde
Saga 2
Some more teams for bolt action British airborne from anyone I find.
Probably some star wars legion
Picking up some cards for sharp practice
Trying not to tempt myself with wrath of kings/gates of Antares
Sadly Saturday night is a no no for me. But will be in the customs house Friday evening after setting up our game 🙂
PS: come visit us “Bexley Reapers Wargaming Club”. The ones who had the Jurassic park table last year. Buy merch!
Pps: there is no merch.
Happy Sunday all. I don’t really have a wish list for Salute this year; I’m trying not to get any new games and might well be holding onto my cash to expand my Eldar with some Harlequins rather than get something entirely new. Possibly a little more WWX if the deals are right. As I haven’t painted up my Tombstone Posse yet buying too much more will just swamp me.
I’m thinking of trying to get hold of the Eldar Collection artwork if GW have it on sale.
Basically things that don’t take up too much more shelf space!
Ohh… If I can afford it my real big treat to myself may be a Rogal Dorn.
I assure you having snogged @dignity last year at UKGE I have no intention of going through that experience again, I might just go with ‘hi’ this time. I also believe Justin said I should have bought him a beer first so I may have to get him one at the Customs House.
As long as he doesn’t shave his beard off between now and then I’m the guy that looks like the older, more ‘rounded’ version of Justin.
See you there BoW!!!
Stone the crows fellas! The stuff you’re showing off for BoW 2.0 is frickin’ stunning!
BoW 2.0 sounds great! How’s mobile adaptability? And can I upload pictures from my iPhone?
Happy Sunday (although it’s now Monday!)
Beasts of War 2.0 . . . really looking forward to it, but some of the little things I am really happy to see. Like being bale to post without interrupting a video, or being able to arrow through pictures rather than load, look, close, load next one . . . . it’s the little things in life that make it good. 😀
Have a good time at Salute!
well done Gerry @avernos I see your Warren @warzan mind control app is working. we need to progress to the next level 😉 😉
I might actually wait for the new BoW to launch before I start painting my Dark Angels 5th Battle Company army and then create a project out of it.
This is what I would like to see at Salute (where I unfortunately won’t be able to go to.)
Bad Squiddo Games
Hasslefree Miniatures
Modiphius & Fallout: Wasteland Warfare
Oathsworn Miniatures & Burrows and Badgers
I’m utterly in love with the Projects idea. It’s just awesome! I’m planning on putting up a Craftworld thread but the idea that in the future, I can open a dedicated Project for it and keep it going here is just glorious! I have 12,000 points painted as is but that is merely a third of the Craftworld Eldar I own. 🙂
Gonna be amazing guys! 🙂
The new BoW 2.0 looks great, very interesting to see the projects side of things. Looking forward to seeing all the new features when it launches.
As someone who does commission painting I’m thinking how awesome the project system would be to showcase my work. I can see this replacing facebook as my main communication tool for potential customers. Directing them to my repertoire of projects on BoW would be way more useful.
always a good watch! Thanks!
Watching this later and I love all the great ideas that you guys have come up with, can’t wait to start generating new content and seeing more of what the community is up to. Great work @warzan and BoW team!
I’m a week late, but happy last Sunday!
Loving what I’m seeing about all the new project stuff for BoW 2.0. Makes me want to get started on a couple of things.
@warzan two thoughts: rather than a setting to make things visible to friends only, could you set it so that you can choose who sees it? I’m thinking there might be times you want to make a thread for a group of people – say, who are all working on the same project – but not a wider audience. In fact, I can’t think of many reasons or occasions you’d want to something not fully public and not private but open only to those you were officially friends with.
There’s another feature I’d love you to add, and that’s being able to ‘tick’ off content once we’ve seen it. e.g. I’d love to be able to put a tick next to each weekend as I watch it so that in a few months time, I can scroll through all the past weekenders and quickly see which one(s) I didn’t watch at the time. Or if I’m trying to catch up on your Kingdom Death campaign, it would be handy to be able to see quickly that I’ve watched the first 5 episodes but no more.
Right there with you big bro Warren. I also hate the assholes that that try and ruin the hobby for the rest of us.
