The Fyreslayers Fight Their Way Into Age Of Sigmar
January 9, 2016 by brennon
If you were wondering when the next big faction was going to come to Age of Sigmar then wonder no more. After all the spoilers the next army, the Fyreslayers, are now on pre-order from Games Workshop.
Flame-Wreathed Leaders
Leading the charge we have the Auric Runemaster who you can see here. He is a deadly warrior but also has the ability to summon up flames and ash from the depths.
One of the abilities his has is to cause terrain to bubble and boil with lava making it hard to cross for your enemy. I quite like the design they've gone for here although with no moustache he does look a little odd don't you think?
Warriors Of Fire
Following on from him we have the foot troops who will be fighting to reclaim Ur-Gold from the other races in the Age of Sigmar world. We'll kick off with the Vulkite Berserkers.
To help the new and improved 'slayer' from not dying so very quickly the Vulkite Berserkers actually refuse to die when they have their own brethren around them. This gives them an additional save when taking mortal and regular wounds. They also hit like a truck with those deadly axes.
Next up are the Hearthguard Berserkers who come with axes which also carry small flails/pots on the back. These let out a gout of flame as they fight hurting their foe even after the axe has smashed through them.
Last but not least we have the Auric Hearthguard who come armed with ranged weapons. These firesticks send blasts of flame towards the enemy and keep them at bay so that the Auric Runemaster can do his work.
I really like the design of all of these models from Games Workshop. While you might put it down to me loving Dwarfs, I think that they work really nicely as an army. They've done a great job of making them look deadly and not silly which was one of my major concerns.
You can find out more via their Battlescrolls over on the webstore.
What do you think?

I’m liking these and I’m sure they’ll be in @brennon dwarfen army but is it just me, or is there too much flesh? I’m a bit uncomfortable with dwarves in armoured jockstraps but hey, I would certainly be worried if I saw these raging across the battlefield towards me.
I mostly like but why do GW keep sticking chains on weapons.
Corporate chains?
I looked at the sprews and they do have halberds without the ball and chain option. I think it’s to give the model a sense of motion as this is the weapons striking. Otherwise the chains would be hanging down vertically.
Personally I don’t like the chains hanging off every weapon, unless it’s a flail or morning star that we all know tends to have chains as a part of it. Have the slightest idea why but I tend to just cut them off.
they look soo static….or awkward. With such a limp swing those chains would dragging on the floor.
Can’t quite put my finger on it but there is something strange in the posing of these, the only one that looks like a comfortable (?) pose and therefore plausible is the Runemaster. Or it could just be that the Runemaster is just the only one that is enticing my brush
Just spotted my new army, once my Chaos force is completed!
These are looking really good. Plus, GW have said this is just the start and there is more Fyreslayers stuff to come over the next few weeks, probably the giant salamander models, and I suspect a battletome is also incoming.
Dwarfs?
No those are utterly awful.
Agreed. I don’t normally slag off the GW stuff even when it’s not my cup of tea but I find these quite… disturbing. And not in a good way. It’s so odd – I really liked the plastic armoured dwarf infantry they released at the end of Warhammer, but these… Wow.
I like the style but the lack of armour means the different units look very similar. I think if I was to collect these guys I’d want to get a lot better at freehand and go crazy with tattoos. Different colours for the units to set them apart.
And I agree with the above comment about the poses. Not a complaint I usually have with GW but they do look a bit static. The lack of movement makes the chains look a bit odd.
Stiff slayers with sauna sticks and carneval head gear .. lovely
Exactly. The posing is awkward, the proportions even more so, the geometry is wrong, the painting is cartoony, the beards look awful, the weapons just look silly… Just terrible.
I get the impression that whoever sculpted them decided on the poses for models of a regular height and then shrunk them to dwarf size without re-positioning anything or thinking about how a dwarf might move.
I’m not sure we can say the Geometry is wrong. But I’ve never met a Dwarf so who am I to judge.
Better not get you started on Peppa Pig then Roman! 😉
Those awkward poses and proportions is what makes fantasy so appealing and a welcome break from slagging off inaccuracies in historical stuff. Personally, I love em 🙂
Best hope Warren doesn’t commission you to paint any for BoW..lol 😉
Not keen on these. Get rid of the helmets, give them smaller crests, give some of them trousers and shoes and drop the chains and they’d be much better.
The only good parts in my opinion are the Runemaster’s staff and the standard (not pictured), but only because they’d be great for Chaos Dwarfs.
What is with people complaining about them being clothless and having no armour? This is a slayer army. Just type in dwarf slayer in google and see for yourself what they look like and I’m confident you’ll get the connection quick.
Grant it not many models up until this release have them with helmets with crests as it was often a mohawk they sported. But I’ll leave that to creative licence on GW part. One I’m not so happy with but I can live with it.
you think they’re complaining now ?
Imagine the rage if these had been female dwarves …
Isn’t this sexist to have so many naked lads in one army ?
It’s only sexist if it’s females, the perpetual victims.
Regarding the minis I think they’re freaking horrible. That said I think I’d rather like them if they were classical dwarves, with heavy armour and all that. It’s not the craftsmanship I dislike in these naked chubbies.
No, it’s only sexist if they’re sexualized and objectified because of their biological sex, when there is no counterpart of the opposite sex. Please don’t bring that up, as these dwarves (male or female, assuming dwarf females have beards) clearly aren’t sexualized anyway. It only invites confusion.
I noticed you got some down votes but you’re bang on the money.
Red Sonya in bikini mail bad, Conan in furry underpants good.
“Red Sonja in a bikini mail” is a hypersexualized female (her sexual characteristics are prominently exposed, and, depending on the illustration, she may not evne look that muscular), but at least she’s not a victim or subdued like most Fantasy females… I wouldn’t bat an eye, but some people would.
As for “Conan in furry underpants”, this is actually a false equivalence ! He is not represented in a sexual way… his sexual characteristics (genitalia, beard, etc) are not prominent, only his muscles are. While it can be sexy to some, this is NOT necessarily a “female dreamboy”, but in fact a heteronormative male power fantasy for boys to identify with.
This comic may help.

Straw man argument.
The thing I was confused with most is people complaining about the dwarves looking like the way that type of dwarf should look like. It’s like saying “What’s with the kilt?” on a scottish warrior model.
Oh one other thing, price. I was truly in shock at the cost. For once this may very will be an affordable army. It has been ages since I seen them priced models like this.
Correction. I was on the wrong website. On the UK not the Canadian GW site 🙁 Canadian dollar is twice that of the pound. I take back my statement about cost affordable. I’ll stick with Wrath of Kings for its costs.
Have GW heard of the phrase ‘less is more?’
Charge more and sell less is what they drive confidently
Not really an AoS gamer to be honest, but that’s as much because wasn’t into the Warhammer aesthetic either previously. But strangely I actually rather like these. It might be because the vibe that popped into my head seeing them was the ‘Hawk Men’ from Flash Gordon (sans the wings of course). Can’t un-see it now.
It’s ok to admit that you like sweaty, vertically challenged, beardy and burly men. It’s 2016 after all ;P
I like that sort of thing… And yet hate those dwarves.
I like them for the most part. I just wish we didn’t have to pay an arm and a leg for these guys. That said, I am looking forward to the common(if rumors are true) and the Chamon dwarfs. Hopefully they will be cheaper…….not gonna hold my breath.
I think the poses are horribly stiff looking, and the whole effect is a bit too “Mardigras”,which may suit some players, but is not really appealing to what I want from “Fantasy Dwarves”!
I doubt I’ll be picking these up (nobody plays AoS around these parts anyway), but I quite like the idea of painting them up with obsidian skin and flaming tattoos that look like molten lava running through the flesh…
Why can I imagine the one with his legs and axes spread shouting out in a Scottish accent
“C’n u see me Growler”
These are some of the worst models I’ve seen in along time. The poses are awful, the weapons idiotic …
One unit now costs more than a dropzone starter set.
Besides of Auric Runemaster those don’t have any draw to me.
Overdone, overbusy, unecessary. I like the concept of Dwarf Slaters, but these are just OTT, and not in a good way. Hate them. I’m ambiguous on the gameplay for AOS, and am waitng until I have a game before I make judgement (although it has to be said it us way down my list of games I want to play next) but I have to say I am not liking the design direction for the new models. If wargames miniatures design is rock ‘n’ roll, then these are thrash metal. I think they will be of limited appeal…
They look like bearded chubby babies
I like the orange beards and the helmets.
The models look a bit stiff.
I like the look GW’s old dwarves much better.
Fortunately, it seems that the kits themselves are pretty poseable, so it might be the assembly choices made here that create this oddly stiff appearance.
As for the barely clothed look, that is an established barbarian trope in fantasy wargaming, and as noted by elromanozo upthread, it isn’t problematic or sexist because there is no established cultural norms or power gradient in our society that sexually objectifies shorter bearded men. The same cannot be said about women.
I like the Runemaster, but the rest are poor.
Oddly enough, having looked at the full army pictures in the latest WD, I think this range looks better on the army level than as individual models. They just seem to work as a hoard of axe waving psychopaths, at least for me.
I am looking forward to the next set of Fyrerslayer releases to see where GW is going with the range. the Magmadroths (the big salamander lava beast things) look especially promising.
I’ve resisted all week but I cans resist no more! These are ugly-@$$ mofos! There, got that off me chest lol
So perfect Dwarfs then?
If only that’s what I meant…
The more I see, the less I like. These minis just suck. Intricately detailed ugliness is just extra-ugly.
Who’s paying $8 a figure for these things? This release somehow makes AoS seem like an even bigger mistake than it already was. If you think that GW won’t slam the book closed on this whole failed exercise of uber-expensive Sigmarines and naked dwarves as quickly as possible, you’re going to be surprised.
My thoughts exactly. I regret selling off my Skaven now as it looks like I might not have the option to replace them
In the fluff they exist in the realm of fire. As you can imagine the place is filled with active volcanoes, rivers of lava and extreme heat. So being encased in a suit of metal armour probably doesn’t sound like an attractive proposition. Most of the mortal Chaos units have very little on as well eg. The Bloodreavers that also exist in the realm of fire according to fluff. It’s obviously a narrative decision to not have much armour on them. There’s still the Dwarves from the Forge Father Grungni to look forward to. I expect them to be encased in armour like the Stormcast or near enough to it.
Hi Brennon, I agree, I really like these and look forward to seeing them released.
Always loved dorfs so it’s no surprise that I like these really 🙂
I’ll sort out a small army of these but I’m really looking forward to the Steamhead Duardin faction.
Like the Hearthguard. The extra greaves, vambraces? Semi-sensible beards and business like poses make them much nicer than the vulkite berserkers.
Looking at them on the GW video they don’t seem quite so static. Trying to work out how/if they are worth incorporating into my KoW dwarves army…

Thanks for the link to the YouTube clip. I personally think they look absolutely superb. I am a huge fan of dwarfs and look forward to painting some of these little guys.
I give GW credit for continuing to make “Cosmic Fantasy” figures…but these are too busy..It also seems like they would have no real tactics…just running forward in a berserk rage….good for a few units…not for a whole army.
Well, it does say that this army mostly fights as mercenaries, so a few units of these guys as part of a larger army will probably be a common sight, especially after the Steamhead Duradin get released.
As someone in a German forum said: Perfect dwarven cheerleaders. Just replace axes with pompoms and you are good to go for Bloodbowl. Should make fine dwarf ladies.
silly as hell, we are well’ard dwarves and fight with our arses out! but you should always wear a fuck-off big helmet the same size as your body just to be on the safe side… silly business.
The ridiculousness of it all is half the fun. Mohawk toting, topless, axe-fetishist, suicide-by-monster obsessed dwarfs were never exactly your average run of the mill fantasy trope even back in the days of old Hammer, and were always a little on the silly side. Geralt of Rivia they ain’t.
Besides the purpose of the helmet is clear – it is there to protect the hair do. Do you have any idea how hard it is to grow a decent Mohawk when you have cranial scarring messing with your follicles? Downright impossible, that’s how hard, and these dwarfs are clearly all about the big hair. What the background doesn’t tell you is the real reason they fight for ur-gold – it isn’t that it is fragments of their god, it is a vital ingredient in creating the magical product their need to get that perfect startled cockerel look… 😉
if that was the real fluff for them then i would say they fully represent the fluff, but i doubt its as fun as that and so im still saying sillyness 😀
Darn, I missed my vocation – I should have been writing fluff all these years… 😉
I’m liking them the more I look at them.
They look to me like heroic sized Roman Centurians, might put a small army together for Hail Caesar and field them at the club.
That’ll upset the diehard historical gamers,
Don’t be mean to Oriskany… 😉
In all seriousness, I think he would probably find the whole business rather fun. Most historical wargamers don’t deserve their rather unfair reputation for being a bit stuffy and dour and have perfectly functional senses of humour.
Some new Fyreslayer images have popped up on War of Sigmar, including pictures of the models and warscrolls for the Auric Runesons, Auric Runefather and Auric Runesmiter, covering both the foot versions and the ones riding the Magmadroth/Ur-Salamander critters.
Here is a link:-

The Magmadroths seem pretty nasty in a fight, and each of the hero types has some pretty interesting and potentially useful rules (even if the Runesons have a rather silly aspect to their Explosive Rage rule).
A friend pointed this out.

Compare to just doing a mirror of one side
So basically some lazy use of CAD led to crappy static poses.
