Enjoy your weekend!

Ok guys, just a little question (please see this as feedback, not a rant) but is the intention to have ‘the weekender’ as a substitute for ‘on the table’? It seems to be for the past few weeks it has been talking about new models or video games rather than news stories and events. Still to see any vid about the chapterhouse vs GW ruling, which you cannot deny it is newsworthy. is this the plan?
I agree with you, computer games don’t have a place on a tabletop wargaming site, especially if there is no connection to a wargaming IP. Last week had as a prize a copy of XCOM, I love XCOM but it has no place here. Since they moved to tabletop nation its been a little all over the place!
I’ll be honest with you. For me, ever since they teamed up with Tabletop Nation and moved to England. ( And maybe even a little before that. ) The whole of Beasts of War took a nosedive quality wise. Not to mention the lackluster programs, broken promises and programs not released on time or just not posted at all.
Beasts of War used to be great and i’d jump up and watch everything. Now it’s just “Meh” and I can’t be arsed half the time.
Sorry if this offends any one, but it’s how it is and it’s sad.
I haven’t watched this vid so can’t comment on that, but have been interested in your feedback for a while now.
I’d like to invite you down to the studios to look through stuff and get your feedback in person if your up for it 🙂
While what you say smacks of ‘a generalisation’ I’m certain there is something to it, and I’d like to get at that.
However if it’s just about a general lack of GW related coverage …
Hello Mr Warren sir. 😀
Not sure if your post was meant for me but as it’s immediately after mine i’m going to pretend it was. 😀
( On a side not. This is being written in note pad at 3:30 in the morning so my appologies for the crap spelling, grammar and needless rambling. lol )
First off. If It wasn’t for the logistics of it – Lack of Time, Lack of Money, Lack of transport. I would have loved to have taken you up on the offer of a trip to the studio.
Unfortunately due to all of those things I can’t. Which is a shame as even though I believe the quality of Beast of War has been off it’s game recently, I genuinly respect you all for what you do/have done and you all come over as top blokes and people you can always have a good laugh and a pint with.
Secondly. I was trying to be general on purpose as I was typing fast and being specific would have seen me ramble on. ( Very much as i’m doing now. lol )
If you want specifics though i’ll try and give a few brief ones… ( I should point out that not everybody will necessarily feel as I do, and these are in no particular order of importance or relevance.)
– Lack of shows and updates in general. Some times we can go days now without anything new posted on the BoW site. It used to be that we would get several a day.
– Random instantly forgetable presenters. Many of the the updates we ‘do’ get these days include 1 or 2 random people that we’ve never seen before and never see again afterwards. I mean no disrespect to anybody but this makes it feel ( at least to me ) that i’m just watching some random YouTube video. I think BoW worked better as a small core group of regulars that we got to know and love over time. It was almost like a family. Now it’s just a bunch of strangers. Will this change over time? I honestly don’t know, but the lack of new stuff isn’t helping.
– You say you’re going to introduce new shows or continue with previous ones and then for some reason don’t deliver. What happened to Live rounds, On the table, Feast of games, Turn 8. What happened to the shows on tactics, hobby tips or game reviews… etc
– You say shows will be day specific, released at the same time each week. Sometimes we’re lucky if we get the shows at all let alone on the right day.
– Unboxings. In the past, We’d get several a week, sometimes even several a day on occasion. at the moment we’re lucky to get one a month. The current format is three people with three products giving a brief look at some sprues in a standoffish clinical manner (probably not the right words to use but my brains not working propperly at the moment. ) and for me this just doesn’t work. In the past we’d get a single box per show, a detailed look at the parts, a quick rundown of what it was capable of and then a finished example of the product made up for us to drool over. It was much more intimate and personal.
In fact I think that’s a large part of what’s missing. Beasts of War isn’t as intimate or personal as it was. It used to be as if I was amongst friends – like it was me and a group of mates. Whereas now it feels like i’m watching a shopping channel. That, teamed with the lack of shows makes for a dull experience.
Which is starting to make more sense now that I think on it.
The Shows that i’ve enjoyed the most from the new Beast of War have been the Dreadball, Flames of War, the one and only Feast of games and Andys lolk at Codexes. ( Ah balls. How do you spell that any way? Codexi? Codexs? lol ). All programs that have a much more intimate feel to them – shows where I feel like a participant and not an observer.
Well. That’s all my brain can cope with at this time of the morning. I’ve probably missed out a huge chunk of what I meant to put and half of it probably makes no sense whatso ever. But I hope it get’s my feelings across. lol ( I’ll probably re-read this later and think “What the F was I going on about?” )
Sorry ti hijack but I think think you have some good constructive stuff in there…..god knows what you would have achieved during normal waking hours lol!
This is a bit left field but my family has been spending a lot of time on Yogscast. Youtube channel that reviews computer games by mainly playing them. They have over 5mil subscribers (1mil more than the pop. of the country I’m currently living in) They essentially split it mainly by presenters/teams of presenters….i mention this because….
The big/most fundamental change here is diversity of gaming systems. Unfortunately most mortals can only concentrate on a handfull of games (wallet but mainly time constaints). This automatically means less relevant stuff for everyone…..and less depth for all games as well (having said that Lees Eldar articles have been brilliant at giving added depth to the Eldar week). I myself am struggling to get used to this.
Perhaps if certain presenters specialise in presenting their favourite games (like yogscast seem to do…although not exclusively) it will be easier for us to associate with those we have systems in common with. This may also avoid vids where presenters appear to be a bit lost or keep feeling the need to apologise. Maybe BoW needs to dictate gaming territory to its presenters so they can specialise ( only during work time-like newspapers do with journalists) then get together on the weekenders to compare notes and give a round up?!
Essentially then, BoW seems to be expanding in a way that has made it tricky for a small team to support all the games with enough knowledge/time to keep the majority of ( massive assumption here) one or two system gamers sated and therefore feels a bit gaming lite and product heavy.
Maybe more formal links with more specialist channels would help alleviate this?
So long as BoW has an aim for what it wants to be and that is associated with the required resources this will just turn out to be growing pains…for all of us.
I hope you don’t mind if I throw my 2p’s worth in as well.
I have been a back stager for a few years now and have gone from checking the site a couple of times every day for new content to a couple of times every week.
i agree with all of the comments above but with 2 in particular.
1. I don’t feel a connection with the team any more. The reason Top Gear the TV show (like it or loathe it) became so successful was down to the way the audience made a connection with the 3 presenters. You got to know them and you felt while watching the show that you were spending time with your mates talking about cars and stuff. BoW used to have the same feeling. I used to enjoy watching you guys even if you were just on screen having a few beers and talking about nothing in particular. Now with a seeming revolving door of guest presenters and new faces it is impossible to make that connection and it does feel like I am just watching a video I found on You Tube.
2. The lack of knowledge on articles has become irritating. It used to be that when you asked the audience for feedback it was for an opinion on something. Now it seems to be for rules clarifications because the presenters are not sure what the rules are. If I want to watch a video with people I don’t know talking about stuff they don’t really seem to know that much about then I can find plenty of them on You Tube.
I don’t want to be all negative. There is still some great content coming out. Mercs week was fantastic and made me really want to try the game and I think the Weekender started well though is now loosing its way.
I guess what I am trying to say is that you guys have a fantastic product/brand and have cultivated some genuine good feeling and a decent following in the community. I would hate to see you loose it.
on the table is a series run on a seasonal basis weekender is seperate altogether… they said on the table would be back in a couple of months i believe. agree i’d like to see a vid on the chapterhouse case as it was only briefly mentioned a while back…
That nurse is amazing!
Willow and taken are great movies and don’t forget about istanbul
@tasker I agree with you 100%.
They called this Eldar week…..wasn’t advertised as such on the site was it?
Ever since they teamed up with wayland…sorry, I mean table top nation; 40k coverage has been lack luster at best.
What’s happened to all the 40k news and scoop’s…for example from before the move, the necron coverage with “artist renditions” of the new codex units.
The site was mostly 40k/WHFB coverage before, now your lucky if you get 1 or 2 bits a month minus the 4-5 video’s they get round to doing for a codex release.
Some of us would regard this as a good thing. This is not in a “let’s have a dig at GW” way – the majority of my hobby time still goes on WFB – more that there are so many fantastic games coming out right now, I’d much rather hear about them than 40k.
I’d estimate that 40k has more coverage than any other game system out there and I’m extremely happy to see other games get some attention.
I don’t mind the coverage of other game systems. I have no issues with that.
It’s the getting 4 or 5 underwhelming programs a week we get now ( if were lucky ) compaired to the dozens of great ones a week that we used to, that really gets to me.
They change the format of shows so that they now look like they can’t be bothered and everythings a chore. They promise they’ll do something and then it never happens. They introduce something new that’s actually quite good and then it’s never heard from again.
It’s just a joke now. It’s as if they’re just doing it purly for the sake of doing it rather than because they love the hobby and want to.
It’s very frustrating now. Beast of War used to be fantastic. 🙁
@tasker,
I feel it is a sum total of things that has led to the lackluster path that we now find this all going in, when looking at this site.
One of which for me is the vulgar display of money grubbing by GW. In reference to the codex creep and nerfing of assault armies with the advent of 6th edition. That is not the fault of BoW but does add to the decline in popularity of the site.
I could go on all day concerning the ills of “craphammer 40k”
However it will only result in the enraging of fanboys and really have no desire to listen to there mad ramblings either. Will probably drop this and not look back…
I think another nail in the coffin for me was the loss of Andy and Darrell as permanent fixtures as well. I really liked those guys and a lot of the magic of the time was the watching of those two put their own spin on this video channel.
Lastly, They should focus on other games I don’t see a future in only rehashing different levels of hawking plastic for GW. Especially since they are doing there best to crush online companies. Including media sources such as this one.
Sounds like suicide to me, but hey whatever…
Oh ya the thing that also hurts is the new “lap dogs only need reply ” This is what caused me to leave when it was obvious that they were starting to set up filters that would wipe any thing that was deemed to even remotely be discord.
This is no different from any other site now…
So to total it up
You now have Andy and Darrell gone for the most part.
you are force fed craphammer 40k and,
if you complain they wipe your comments and,
people who are critical and honest are parting,
like the red sea.
All that is really left are abunch of weak kneed
slobbering piss willy fan boys.
I guess this is the desired effect
of those who pay the bills here.
Gee where do you sign up for that- lol
The more coverage of different systems the better as far as I’m concerned.
The lack of discussion of the CHS/GW decision is a major omission and to ignore it and just talk about new releases and the like is a worrying sign. Not that they shouldn’t be talked about, but to omit even mentioning major news stories that affect the industry gives the impression that the site is fluff piece designed to show off product. I know we had the XLBS a little while back which discussed the negativity that can surround coverage of these types of stories but they still have to be acknowledged at least. I am at the point where I’m giving serious thought to whether my next BS payment will be my last, something I’d never have considered a month or two ago. BoW is becoming a site where I pop on to check what the new releases are.
Personally, I would pay a little more for my membership in return for more content. Specifically content that was more than unboxings, demos, or promos for new releases.
Where is Warren ??
Just does a good enough job and interesting discussion towards the end. Warren, presumably, has worked in tv before etc. and just works better as a presenter of The Weekender.
I used to like on the table as it gave a good idea of whatever else was out there as opposed to constant GW stuff. If I wanted that I would go to a GW specific site. Beasts of War format has given airtime and promotion space to other and often better games that were under promoted. I have to agree that the major change seemed to occour around the time of the move. But hasn’t Warrens better half produced a mini Warren recently or is my mind playing tricks. Maybe our perception of what is going on is coloured by the driving force having extra responsibility now? Whatever has gone on content is reduced now on all levels. I will still come here for news of systems and figures from other games manufacturers but maybe not as often as I would have.
Eldar is the 40K army of choice for three people including myself at our club.
We have all played Eldar for a long time although we constantly tinker with our lists our armies remain totally different from each other so I’m not surprised to see a difference of opinion on here.
Your right it’s difficult to look at units in isolation.
Bring back Turn 8. Its why most of us came to this site.
not me guvnor, been here for many moons, even before the live paint party (which im pretty sure was the spiritual prequel to turn 8)
It all went downhill once that Stuart got involved. I’d blame him!
i say recently we havnt seen enough of that stuart your talking about!!
Stu Who? lol
Hopefully he’s creating a deliberate Stu lul before bursting back on to the scene with multiple volumes of Inhertance goodness to blow all the nay-sayers and heretics into the next galaxy…..either that or Butlins……(he’s on his hols I mean, not blow heretics to Butlins….that would be daft…..mmmm…..interesting concept though….). If I nay said a lot would being blasted to Butlins be a bonus or a Hellish torment? Ramble…gibber…too much beer…..burp.
I agree with Stuart, he is to blame, punish him by making him do hours and hours of videos for our entertainment!
On another note, I’m glad GW aren’t the main focus of BoW and that they are exploring lots of other systems. I love the setting of 40k but actually there are other brilliant games and systems out there that are worth trying! Infinity, FoW and Malifaux to name just a few. However I have noticed the last few weeks that the videos have been a little thin in worthwhile content (there are a few exceptions to this tho!)
All in all this is a great site, and I will keep up my subscription. Keep up the good work everyone! 🙂
as always good show kind of cool to see the weekender getting it’s line up mixed up now and again enjoyed the vid nice work guys… especially enjoyed the chat about the new forms of sculpting and it’s practicalities
I mostly play 40k but its nice to see other games getting some air time to review. The chapter house news should have raised a great video with rampant discussion. Opportunity missed there?
How Eldar week has been for me painful (it’s an army i play almost exclusively in 40k). I did comment that the reviews felt like they were coming from a MEQ point of view with no real appreciation or understanding as to how Eldar play. I do know that the fellas did respond back to me about tight schedules (understandable), but a little homework would have made it feel less knocked together.
Something happened with the GW/Chapter House saga? Wish someone on BoW covered it so I would know.
yes dude, court case is now over, a lot of stuff happened, BIG impact on the after parts market for this hobby, if you want to have a good read im afraid you will have to glean the info from Faeit212, bell of lost souls and blood of kittens
YEAH! Toughest Girls of the Galaxy gets a mention! WOOHOO!
Raging Heroes Kickstarter looks awesome, but come on guys the whole “I’m not sure about getting these models because there’s no game for them” is a lame way of thinking.
Most people on forums and the kickstarter comments say they’re gonna use them for Imperial Guard, and besides, Raging Heroes have said that they’re planning on creating a whole game and ruleset for this range, ‘ya just need to have some faith.
Ok if I has said “I might not get these, as beautiful as they are, I don’t think I play any systems I can use them in” would have been better.
I like some of the RH minis, I don’t play Imperial Guard or 40K or any other game I can think of they would reasonably be proxies for. I have a limited budget and want to spend that on minis I can use on the tabletop, such as the Wargods of Olympus KS that’s running at the same time. Therefore I’ll wait till they produce their system, see if it interests me, and make a decision on whether to buy any then. Perfectly reasonable and in no way “lame”.
personally i am still really enjoying BOW. but i think it depends on how you look at it. i see it a digital weekly magazine. news, updates, whats going on in the industry, new releases. i think this is awesome compare it to white dwarf and the BOW guys blow it out of the water, i think it is fair to take into consideration that one when they do breakdowns of a new codex they are just voicing there opinions as such it is natural for people to have different ones. also all the Eldar content was free for everyone it wasn’t put on back stage. don’t know about any one else but if i went to a restaurant and got a free meal i wouldn’t be complaining if my chips were a bit cold.
Even with the new WD it is not something to it take that much to be better than, as for news coverage the always updating for mate of a website beat the old magazine.
If proof were needed that you can’t please all of the people all of the time then the comments on the amount coverage 40K gets on BoW is it. Some want more, others want less. My personal feelings on 40K are that I don’t like and hence don’t play it but given its popularity it deserves a significant amount of airtime on the site. As I don’t play it I obviously don’t watch many of the videos but when I have the impression I’ve gotten is that the presenters could have benefited from more prep time to get know the codex and play the army. It often comes across like they’ve had the book thrust upon and are reading their way through it.
The two themes that have developed in these comments which I think are most pertinent are the inconsistent approach to releasing video content and the revolving door on presenters. There certainly have been some benefits to the move to TTN as the breadth of the coverage has greatly improved and the site seems a lot more plugged in to a wider gaming scene. Some of the new faces are good additions, Stu in particular seems very knowledgable about tabletop gaming and is able to articulate that well. The WM/H content benefits from Kev’s presence as he clearly has a passion for it and knows what he’s talking about. What has definitely been lost is the dynamic the previous team of presenters shared. Warren, Justin, and Stu were developing their own on The Weekender during their stint together and the show has definitely suffered since it was broken up. Engaging with the content of a video is very hard if you’re not also engaging with the people on the video and you need to get to know them to do that.
I appreciate that for all the great looking content that BoW manage to get out, behind the scenes it’s a very small team working at full capacity. I assume that’s what causes the irregular content and random string of faces. If it is the case then it might be worth reassessing what’s viable for BoW to do. Does every show that’s put on the site have to be video or could some be audio only, thus saving time spent on video editing? What is the best balance between quality and quantity of content. What amount of video content can reasonably be produced in one week? is it possible to maintain a schedule of content? What shows benefit the most from having Warren present them and which ones can be used to develop new presenters. And so on. Use shows like The Weekender to talk to us a bit about why certain shows aren’t seen for a while and what to reasonably expect out of the site in the near future.
@tasker I also agree with you completly. Plus Im also considdering cancelling my BS subscription.
Its a pity because I realy used to like the BoW site and the vibe. All the content now is so meh and realy lads, theres a presenter of the Weekender grumpy because he had to get up out of bed to do the show! Seriously?
Show times running at half what they used to be. Content way down. I cant think of any reason to have a BS subscription since I bought it, nothing of note since January.
If there are personal reasons for the drop in content I could almost understand but this has been the trend ever since BoW moved to Tabletop Nation. I stuck with it because everyone knows moveing “house” is one of the most stressful things you can do but the “pay off” Ive been waiting for hasnt arrived despite fervent statements to the contray promissing more coverage and content.
All in all the sites taken a big nosedive over the past six months.
I honestly wish this wasnt the case but there you have it. And yes, I do believe it has everything to do with the team up with Tabletop Nation, and no Stuart I dont blame you personally. But what used to be absolutely “THE” best gameing site around is sadly no more. Maybe one of you would like to address this and, more importantly, give us a solid indication of what to expect from BoW over the next six months.
In laymans terms…Jeez lads get it together will ya, the sites a ghost of what it used to be.
Sorry for the negative comment but the vibe, as I put it, is realy missing since the move. I understand that youre all busting a nut to get content out but Im not the only one feeling a disconnect with the site.
Bring back Andy and Darrell, hell even Loyd! and Turn 8 for that matter. Stew I can live with ( I actually warmed a lot to you Stew ).
Bigger in this instance hasnt translated to better.
Again Im sorry for the negativity lads but Im just not feeling the love the way I used to for whatever reason. Consistancy probably. Plus the loss of old and well liked presenters.
Anyway, happy gameing lads.
Andy and Darrell live in another country dude
If a game maker or online retailer was smart they would snatch up Andy and Darrell then give them the means to start producing video’s again as a team…
I would gladly pay a nominal monthly fee to watch those guys again.
Regardless of which country they are currently living in.
I love warm stew……and his dumplings…lol
He’s a great asset and BoW are lucky to have some of his time for their vids.
BoW is a tricky combination of reporting and expert advice. Youtube tends to be people throwing stuff out and hoping somebody somewhere likes it and a lot is pretty awful. BoW have put the bar much higher than that and brought a high level of professional polish to the online wargaming community….and it worked really well, when the presenters were also the experts. Now they have expanded their gaming remit they simply can’t hope to work the same magic without bringing in “expert” help. The mainstay BoW guys then perhaps need to be thought of as more like “TV anchors” and guest presenters as “experts”. So its a fundamental change but a required one if they aim to have a wide remit on limited resources. Downsides are lower level of depth, more prep requirements and harder to engage the viewers.
I’ve enjoyed the move to cover more game systems and have enjoyed the post-move shift. In particular enjoying the dreadball and flames of war shows :). However, I agree it works best when there is consistency in presenters, and this is very true with the weekender which def worked best when stu, warren and Justin anchored the show with different guests to bounce off them. 🙂
It boils down to, people scream they want change, but when it happens they scream they liked how it once was.
I for one doesnt miss Andy and or Darrel.
And i doubt some series are gone forever, On the table, turn 8.
Than the bashing on GW, that seems rather pointless. Yes we know its expansive and that wont change anytime soon, nor does GW seem to change policies.
However it seems that none of this is the cause by those we know from GW but rather those who are in the money department. Share holders and such.
In the end you can bash on them, but they aint forcing you to buy there stuff, nor do they force you to use there stuff in Warhammer tourneys due to a simple fact that they arent hosting tourneys (at least over here). I play Warmachine warjacks as dreadnoughts/hellbrutes sometimes.
If you do want to bash on something than bash on te fact that they are going backwards with there 40k stories, eg Chaos marines and Eldar are now before the 13th black crusade
@spacefrisian
So many craphammer 40k fan boys…
