What Makes For A Good Games Master?

We talk about what makes for a good Games/Dungeon Master with some of the best here at UK Games Expo.

It's a delicate and fine art, sometimes a thankless task too, and so when you get a good Games Master you should certainly make sure you give them their due!

What do you think makes for a good GM/DM when you get to the tabletop?

Patience, a running imagination, and genuine interest in the game’s lore

Adaptability, being able to change things on the fly because sometimes the players just go their own way and you can’t force them one way even if you have abunch of things planned.

Coming up to 20 years since I moved away from my old Call of Cthulhu group. We had a great party and an outstanding GM. Great fun and occasional brown trouser moments. And sanity checks, always the sanity checks.

Please forgive this shameless post as I’m going after either the 4Ground stuff or the Bushido stuff. I play Bushido here in the states. I teach it to whoever will listen, and I just try and represent it as it is. The best miniature game I’ve played.

To be a good GM/DM you need to be able to improvise. As your players go down paths you never intended, you need to appear calm and in charge as you create new things on the fly.

I always worry I’d spend ages thinking about some little hidden detail or curio and then the players would just walk past and not even notice…
