The Weekender: The Great Beasts Of War Road Trip!
December 7, 2013 by warzan
Video Sponsors: Warmachine - Infinity - Kings of War
Last weekend we didn't have a Weekender as some of you may have noticed but that was because Warren & Lloyd were travelling across the sea and making a road trip down to Nottingham for the Mantic Open Day and PLENTY of other exciting things that are now sitting in the pipe line for you all.
So, today we're going to be giving you a run down of how it all went including a walk through of the Mantic Open Day itself.

Was such a good day, and you nearly bumped into me at the front of the burger van queue 🙂
Hey @lloyd sorry I got you drunk 😉 @warzan your turn at the next meet up!
Hey ! Great video ! We can feel the good vibes ^_^ Thanks guys !
I’m a huge fan of Mantic since DreadBall, and I’m waiting for DeadZone, here, in France !
So thanks for the Mantic Day report (and for Dropzone news).
Always a pleasure to see your videos on week-end !
Nice one, I’ve ordered deadzone from my local shop, looking forward to that, they have a dreadball league going so I’m hoping deadzone takes off in a similar way, I’m probably not alone here, but I think I’m more excited about the scenery than I am the minis, I still play Necromunda, and I can see great possibilities with this stuff.
Despite my lowly placing in the Dreadball tournament, it was a cracking day out. Already looking forward to the next one!
Great report, fellas!
Blame the night before 😉
I blame my opponents. Damn them and their ability to play the game. It all smacks of taking it too seriously 🙂
That was a great video to watch. Really enjoyed the few small interviews along with a sneak peak look at the sprues and unboxings. There seemed to be a great vibe at the event as well.
Nice interviewing techniques by the way. You seem to get people nice and relaxed before you check out their boxes. I guess they are easier opened that way.
lol 😉
It was a great day. Chilled, full of fellow enthusiasts who have the same love of the hobby. Mantic are going places and I cant wait to see where that place is. Also I got a photo with Brother Lloyd and Warren. My life is complete.
Was a great day – claim to fame on the video too and stealing a parking space before Warren when he rolled in 🙂
Yeah Mantic is definately coming of age now so to speak. The new building will be amazing once its kitted out and cant wait for Deadzone to take its place up there and bring us all more awesome resin goodness!
Good to see so many people enjoying gaming and collecting Deadzone, and a lot of kudos to Ronnie & Co for inviting other companies to join in the mayhem – that is the kind of positive, cooperative and synergystic collaboration that can only benefit all those involved and all those who are lucky enough to be able to come along for the event.
I am looking forward to my Deadzone delivery – hopefully before Christmas.
great job warren and crew
Now i know why my Dreadball box as round corners… Looking forward to see Deadzone one… intact if possible O.o
About that final Dreadball Ultimate match… did anyone recorded it ? I think you should do something like a separate event like is done for Warmahordes in their famous tournaments. Same goes for KoW Tournaments.
Im the guy with glasses wearing the beanie playing the Ultimate DreadBall match in the video. I won it with my “Zegema Beach Zephyrs” Asterian team:

I won the Southern Ireland “Regional” (ahem) in Thomond Park in Limerick last Summer which qualified me. Was there something in particular that you wanted to know about the game?
As I watched that vid, I got the same feeling as Warren touched on at the end. With Dreadball and now Deadzone, Mantic have a really good shot at being a huge success. Real contenders for the go-to miniatures company. Competition for GW? Not for several years yet, but they’ve got my money this year for the first time, and I think they will continue to get it for the foreseeable future. I still love GW, but Mantic have definitely earned a place in my heart.
Great video guys! I so wish to get to one of these events one day!!
Another good show. Looking forward to seeing what you are playing tomorrow.
To be fair with Pacific Rim, Del Toro said cleary that it will be a Kaiju movie, so …. JAPAN! Nothing needs to make sense, just be bizarre epic and look at the horizon with sun rising as you walk away… ahhh
You’re welcome, Ronnie :p
When I first saw the trailer for Pacific Rim I thought “Why haven’t they chosen to create a live-action interpretation of Evangelion?” It would have had basically the same premise, but much better, although quite disturbing, characters and story.
I think if anything Warren was too generous in his review. One of the most painful trips to the cinema I’ve ever endured.
Try a cinema with comfortable seats next time 😉
If only it was that :'(
curses BOW delayed my courier (the grinning fellow) Byron, great fellow who runs my local club who let me jump on the clubs terrain order and his order for my enforcers (beautiful models) and deadzone has proved to be awesome from my games so far… need even more of our terrain built though cover is super important.
Wish I’d been able to get down but the trip from wales was a little much for me (especially with our 24 hour club session that started at 3pm the same day) salute the guys who went from my club! (all of whom were at the front of that queue for collecting their deadzone).
future sounds good at BoW keep it up guys!
We really need a mantic/con here in the states…
Can somebody whisper this notion in Ronnie’s direction.
Eitherway it is nice to see such a grand turn out for Deadzone.
Fantastic vid gents,
I am so envious that we don’t have anything of that caliber in Australia (or at least my part of it). Your show casing of dead zone and their terrain certainly peaked my interest, I shall eagerly look forward to seeing warzan show us his creative skills with the terrain.
I’m still dining off the Mantic open day, had such a great time. Awesome to meet so many people sharing the same passion for wargaming. May be BoW should have a stall setup by marketing to encourage more people to sign up to Back Stage, free BoW T-Shirt for an annual subscription? A limited edition figure of Warren stabbing a Space Marine with a potato peeler….lol.
Thanks guys for another crackin’ show.
good weekender as always chaps, I’m looking forward to the deadzone unboxing and all that as well as what you guys do with the scenery.
Look out games day … Mantic and friends on the march!
Another great show in the can!
Thank you Beasts of War for the coverage of Mantic Open Day! I live in the states and have no way to get to the Open Day and I love watching the coverage every year. The more I see of Mantic the more I love the company and its open way that it is run. Looking forward to my Deadzone kickstarter coming and the Deadzone coverage here.
Awesome Weekender, wish i could of gone to the Mantic open day. and the Backstage meet up was awesome!
Looks like I missed a great day, literally
Hey Guys, didn’t you record the Open day seminar? Any chance of posting it for us? 😀
Still no footage of Deadzone being played. 🙁
Finally got to watch this. Mantic day really looked nice!
Just love how the Mantic warehouse is setup like a giant game of Deadzone and using real people, genius….lol
Thanks Warren, my wife now thinks BOW is a cover site for porn, she walks into the room just as you said to the poor guy at the mantic day, ” I just want to look in your box, that’s it, just pull the flaps apart”. I admire his ability to hold a straight face, ‘caus I would have lost it there…….
Justin, I participated in the Deadzone KS, and have the KS box of scenery + two of the Urban Battlezone + 4 of the Antiocities scenery bundles, and have plans for 2 x Urban Battlezone slated for the second wave. My mate did the same. So that guy probably did just buy for himself, after all it is worth it for the price and the desire to create spectacular boards. A really good gaming table takes the game to a new level and invites the themed/cinematic game.
Haha, your lightbulb comments made me laugh. I was pathfinding (running the KoW demo game) that day and you’d think the lights would be easy to sort out…
Mantic hired the string of lightbulbs for the day since the landlord STILL hasn’t got that fixed yet – only a couple of sockets in the building work so they were all jerry rigged to run off them. When the string of light sockets turned up however, the rental company also provided the lightbulbs to go in. 400 screw light bulbs… to fit in bayonet sockets.
This was discovered about half an hour before the doors opened. So me and one of the Mantic guys had to go running to all the local supermarkets and DIY shops to get as many lightbulbs as we could. We completely cleared out Morrisons and Wickes with their highest wattage stuff, but it obviously still wasn’t enough.
*sigh* Pacific rim… I’m an anime fan and big robots fan (Transformers, Robotech, etc) but the movie was rubbish. It was close to being decent, and that was only because of Del Toro and Ron Perlman; maybe the book makes it better but the story and film was just…. glamour. It would have been much better as a TV Series I think.
would like to go to a Mantic Open day… to bad I’m in the states : (
maybe one of these days I’ll get to Gen con or Adepticon or some con they get to.
I really enjoyed the show of mantic day. Its great to the companies making such events all about the game and the hobby and not (like a specific other company) all being about how great the company is and giving BJs to themselves all day long.
And I actually start regretting living in Germany. On a student salary its hard to get to those events. But I’ll make it happen… sometime in the future.
