I’m interested in sub-assembly painting, but I wonder how much of a problem gaps are. When I normally build and then paint a miniature, before painting, I can fill in the gaps. A primer will cover it and you can paint over it and you won’t see it. But when painting with sub-assemblies it seems to me that if you do have gaps when putting the miniature together, you won’t be able to fill it up or fix it. I wonder how much of an issue this is for people who paint like this and what the solutions are for this.
It’s not something I’ve really tried on parts that will be fixed completely before, only done it on things like dreadnaught arms or tank turrets. If you’ve kept good notes on the paint scheme applied to the parts though i can’t see why you should have a problem doing just a little touch up work over any gaps that need filled. I’ve had to reattach parts to fully painted models before and find after a basecoat and light, thin not colour, wash the seams are nearly hidden completely.
Best of luck with the sub assemblies.
