Justin takes a look at the packed Hit the Beach Box Set

Justin is joined by Chris from Battlefront Miniatures to talk about what’s found in the Hit the Beach box set.

the box set is packed with two full forces for you and a friend to roll out on the table. But in addition to all the tanks and infantry, it comes with all the player aids, instruction manuals, and dice so that you can get a game up and running as soon as possible.

Which force would you like to run on the tabletop?

There is so much value in this box set. A couple of small additions to it and you have a nice 100 point army. Thank you for making the great videos.

hairybrains

great box, I prefer the Panzer IV’s over the stugs (sorry ) from the open fire box

thunderchildobs

Great Value. Wish that there were similar sets for other theatres and periods.

ludovic

Did they stop the desert bundle from a year or two ago (when version 4 was initially released)?

lblunchboxlb

So much this! Early war is my favorite and I’d love to see a Polish and German starter set.

olliep

Effectively the same as the v3 Open Fire set, just with better Sherman kits and Pz4s 🙂

ludovic

looks like there are more panzers on the German side.

ludovic

Just checked the box content https://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=6490 and you are perfectly right. Looks like a v3 starter set.

olliep

Yeah they just switched the Stugs for Pz4s

lawnor

They’ve really put some thought in to that box. it looks great

72draco

Battlefront puts together the best starter sets.

brucelea

Very good starter set for anyone who doesn’t already have a sea of 15mm goodness.

sarah101

Could just what I need to get started

korvydae

Great starter set , very tempted after watching the unboxing.

Robert

Looks a great set, and good value as well!

balthazaar

Was trying to leave this game (not because i didnt like it, just i preferred the scale and mechanics of bolt action, and didnt really want to be doing both), but this weekend is making me think maybe ill get back into it, after all, Bolt Action games are on a smaller scale to FoW, and i like the idea of fielding massive armies

mattcapp112

Loving that set. Still think I’d go with the germans. Now if only I could find a group who plays this….

ludovic

The box is missing just one thing decal sheets.

utherdracus

That looks like a good value starter.

jodain

That is a lot of plastic for the price of the box.

daegren

Great box. Panzer IV and Shermans are some of my favorite tanks.

brochtree

I like that the Shermans are able to be built as British. I was worried I’d end up stuck with an american army i didn’t want. Now all i need is some people in my club to take up FoW.

nsogre

nice sized box set.

doomdark

don,t know whether to get this or the army box

crazyredcoat

Good that you can make the Shermans as British. I could try and fob off the Infantry somewhere and get a start on my Poles that I’d like to make.

dorthonion

Nice starter set; the PaK40 75mm hit harder than the KwK40 75mm in the Panzer IV from the G late model onwards. The KwK40 in the Panzer used a cut down cartridge to make it easier to handle in the confines of a turret. Either one of them could kill a Sherman, with the PaK40 being harder to spot when lurking in ambush.

ghent99

This is the best value in gaming at the minute.

ghent99

The only complaint is the infantry spruce, it would have been nice to have a coded card to make the clipping easier. I know the spruce has labels but an easy visual guide ala PSC would have been nice. Especially as there are extra german figures left over.

tgunner91

I think that is in the box set with the papers. It was there in the original Open Fire set and the infantry sprues are lettered so you can assemble the infantry.

Irregardless they have posted it online
US Airborne https://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=6506
German Grenadiers https://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=6505

avernos

correct there is a big booklet showing you who they are and where they go

ghent99

It would also be great if the box set was on the forces of war list builder. It would make expanding out the box a bit easier.

rokdok

The contents are massive.

phaidknott

THIS is the one to buy if you are looking to build up American and German armies. You can buy 2 for the price of 1 of the German or US starter army box sets (and the contents are better). VERY tempting to say the least

jemmy

It is very much like the Open Fire box. That box had 2D terrain included, StuG instead of Pz IV and a version of the Sherman Firefly could be built. Open Fire brought me into FoW, and I´m absolutely sure Hit the Beach will bring many more people into FoW.
Please, battlefront, re-introduce the intelligence briefings. There used to be so many of them on your website. You don´t even have to write books all over again to make the affair increasingly interesting.

tgunner91

The infantry and the Buzz Bomb are actually from that set. They just changed out the tanks… and dropped off the cardboard : (. That’s a really bummer because you got buildings and walls, trees, and counters and objectives. I wish they left the cardboard in.

pagan8th

Never played Flames of War, but heard good things about it.

That is a nice starter box. I suspect I’d want more to expand the battlefield.

What size table does it normally play on?

elessar2590

6×4 or a 4×4 but I’ve found (for the Desert) the bigger the better.

I’ve had one game of 120 Points on an 8×4 and it was epic.

pagan8th

Suspected it would be fairly large based on vehicle speeds and ranges.

I think I like the look of the game more than the rules. Perhaps I just wanted to paint some tanks instead of war-game miniatures for a change.

WW2 tanks and vehicles look so much cooler, more angular than SF or modern vehicles. I hate the look of modern cars, can’t tell them apart really.

astralwraith

looks great, almost certainly going to be getting a box, hopefully at the battlefront open day

deadhead

i will definiately be getting this set

roboute73

This has to be one of the best value starter sets for any game I have ever seen. I actually thought someone had made an error when I saw the price at first.

roboute73

There are a few errors in the video guys.

There are 3 of the 76mm ‘Wet’ M4A1 upgrade kits in the box, for 3 x 76mm Shermans and 5 x 75mm Shermans. This from the FoW website and other box opening vids. ‘Wet’ means the ammo was stored wet, as the main cause of Sherman’s catching fire was ammo cooking off (not the petrol, which is a myth).

You _can_ build the Shermans as British used tanks (and I think you could use either of the transmission covers, as the different styles were just an evolution of the same design), but only limited units used the M4A1 variant of the Sherman in Normandy. None of the British units used the 76mm Sherman.

For those that care about trying to be historically accurate, you’ve basically got 4th (Independent) Armoured Brigade (Royal Scots Greys (Sherman II & Firefly VC), 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sherman II & Firefly VC) and 44th Battalion Royal Tank Regiment (Sherman II & Firefly VC)) using M4A1 Shermans in Normandy. However, these units did not use the 76mm Shermans, so build them all as 75’s and buy a box of Sherman V’s when they come out to add in the Fireflies. Incidentally, the 4th Armoured Brigade had a Motor Battalion attached (2nd Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps) who would be in halftracks.

Later on (much later – into Germany late 44/45), some units did use 76mm Shermans. Mainly (to my knowledge) the Poles and possibly the Canadian 5th Armoured Division. But these would be post D-Day and you would have to hope BF made entries for them.

zorg

A great box of stuff.

lordbob

That’s a lot of plastic in one starter! Very tempting.

bennu

Looks like a great starter set

wolf320f

showing me stuff like this will have my bank manager in tears lol

khy0te

Nice, bigger forces than I was expecting from a starter box.

jimwesterfield

Infantry. That is good.

tgunner91

The US Airborne used the M1919 LMG as squad support weapons. They took the basic M1919 and added a bipod and stock. I want to say that this was the M1919A6, but I’m not too sure. That’s why US paratroopers in the game are rifle/MG teams rather than normal US rifles.

I think this is a wonderful set… but why did BF ditch the cardboard terrain and gaming markers? Those pieces add a lot to the game and made it very playable right out of the box because you had terrain and the necessary markers to play. That’s the only disappointing thing to me about this new set.

jodain

That is a nice looking set there and I like the options in it/.

msenli

That’s a lot of content for a starterbox.

bloodstrike

great box set, and like others have said the change to PzrIV from the stugs in openfire are great

coachjose59

So much in the box, what ah deal for $50 bucks U.S. I need two!

antiquitas

Great starter box. Everything you need for you and a friend to get into game.

darkdanegan

Looks like a very good entry point. 15mm is so wee!

elessar2590

The set looks fantastic, great to see the FoW Guys bringing out epi starter sets.

Not sure who told you that about teh BAR but they’re wrong.

The BAR was issued to and used by the US Forces in WWI, the reason it didn’t get even more use was manufacturing not secrecy.

If you use something the enemy will get their hands on it, the Allies couldn’t even keep tanks out of the enemies hands let alone rifles and everyone on all sides at all levels knew that. The idea that you would create something, spending incredibly valuable resources to do so then be scared the enemy would get their hands on it so you just lock them away doesn’t make much sense especially for something like a rifle.

There was actually a US Marine Battalion who got in trouble for trading/finding/borrowing without Permission (a Marine would never ever even dream of stealing would they 😀 )BAR’s from an Army Division to the point they officially had their BAR’s taken off them.

andre77

The box is a very good 2-player starting box. I can fully recommend it.

gingerrich

Two of the most lovely people I’ve met gushing about FoW. Bloody awesome.

wilco92

nice looking set

skodamarine

My will is weakening… The wallet says no,but it’s such good value!

buggeroff

That’s such a great starter set. Great improvement on the open fire box set and a great price

pafetikbazerka

Looks like the ticket to get me into 15mm wàr gaming

goatberger

Very nice. Might need to pick one up.

bop3635

Looks like a great set but dont know how I’d manage painting at that scale…

tmon

Nice value in the box set!

while

It’s a very nice set.

petey9

ooh this is dangerous. Please hide my credit card

drwonga

Great deal!

fireblarney

Nice amount of value in that box.

lupa15

That’s a really nice kit! I am honestly tempted even though i am not a huge fan of the scale.

buggeroff

that is a great starter set, looking forward to getting my hands on that

jabbaa

Great update to the already excellent starter set. Can’t believe the price either, definitely going to pick up one….. or 2…. ?

tomrr

nice kit as always

battlehawk

Good starter set.

basilbrush

which force? australians lol

falerox

Great kit, great value. Can’t wait till you send me one 😉

dammitprawn

There’s something about tiny artillery pieces that gets my hobby juices flowing!

ghent99

Tanks all built, Grenadiers are primed, Paras are painted and almost ready for finishing the basing. I really like this box set after putting everything together, the price is way better than right so the value is through the roof. coming in around 45 points a side lets you build every thing up from there with a the other box sets to round it out. The only issue that I have is that the prone machine gunners for the paras look horrible, the idea is a great one to make them easier to get on the table but the molds just don’t look good.

So far it is a solid A.

chrisjensen1975

I like that you get the hard plastic infantry and not the flexible infantry. The flexible stuff is hard to clean up.

tomd

Nice core force for anyone starting FOW.
