Flames Of War D-Day Boot Camp: Saturday
Talking Tactics With Gerry and Justin
Justin and Gerry get their tactic brains on to discuss what strategies the players might attempt on the tables today.
Between the different sorts of terrain available and the mix of forces, Gerry deconstructs how best to use the resources available to deliver that sweet sweet alpha strike Justin loves so much!

Only viable tactic is: if it moves, shoot it till it’s dead! MOAR DAKKA!
Soooooo want to play!
Getting along side of German armour is important. Infantry assaults are effective when used correctly. Good stuff guys
I do like the look of having lots of tanks on the table. Should be fun.
I need me the Germans! Those models look absolutely amazing! And loving their tactics of being able to effectively use their smaller numbers.
All bow down to the Sage!
Only one letter off Gerry’ Favourite game ??
The British had Monty, the Americans had Patton, OTT have Gerry!
Gerry you should not be giving your tactics away, or have you.
Infantry and anti tank guns are now very powerful in knocking out tanks or holding objectives
Add anti tank guns and objectives are now incredibly well defended
Loving the videos. I can’t wait to get these myself.
Nice job. Looking forward to seeing some game play.
A very balanced box set.
Is there on option for the tanks to go hull down?
not an option, but by using terrain you can be hull down yes
looking forward to having a go with these myself
sounds like somone has there f.o.w head on great stuff
Looks a huge amount of fun, cant wait to get started purchasing flames of war!
Just CHARGE!!!!
I am really liking the look of all these goodies my only dilemma is I’ll need to work more hours to buy stuff that I like but If I work more hours I’ll no have time for fun.. I’ll think of something..
Great video tactics will change to counter change’s in the field.
no little men just tanks and more tanks
Maneuver and blow the other guy up, got it!
fire and maneuver the key to most games
The tactics for the three forces looks varied which is great.
I need to figure out if this game is living in my city in Holland. Love the camerashots over the streets.
the german force really needs some halftracks to move them around the table
they can ride on the tanks, not safely but it is an option
( I do have 30 odd halftracks for my own grenadiers mind you)
Dang! Gerry does know a lot, more tactical stuff with him!! Please.
I’ve been a FoW player since 2nd edition, I do enjoy the system
It’s cool that the starter armies play differently. So many games have basically mirrored starter forces. Nice for balance but not so interesting.
Looking forward to seeing some battles and who uses these tactics.
Nice explaination on tactics to be used, Gerry.
Assaults are deadly in FoW but I’ve found it harder to get into assault in this addition so far. Probably got my tactics wrong.
it’s not changed from previous editions, suppressing your target is still key, and if you can combine an armoured assault with infantry it’s much more likely to succeed
The big change, at least as I read it, is which teams can perform defensive fire. In the previous edition, defending teams needed clear line of sight to the assaulting unit. Friendly teams blocked line of sight. In this edition, unless I’m reading it wrong, friendly teams no longer block line of sight so potentially an entire platoon can defensive fire. This makes getting the 5 hits to pin the assaulting unit much easier, even if you have suppressed the defenders. So I’ve found a lot more assaults fail to hit home.
I also usually play with my Ghurka company from the Road to Rome supplement. When they get into assault they’re brutal as they hit on a 2+ 🙂
no, still defensive fire from friendlies within 8″ haven’t seen anything that says defensive fire ignores the usual shooting rules requiring LoS although I’ll double check that, they can ignore stationary infantry so that will help
It’s the line on pg75 of my A5 rule book ‘As they are stationary, Defending Infantry Teams do not block line of sight for Defensive Fire’. So a ‘second rank’ can now shoot through a first rank of defenders. 3rd Edition, at least the way I played it, required a second rank team to have line of sight of at least the width of its base, which often stopped a lot of the second rank from firing.
Still, my interpretation of 3rd edition is history now, it’s the 4th edition rules that are the current set 🙂
I dug out all my old rule books. 3rd Edition stated that you cannot fire through friendly teams and you require a 1″ gap between friendly teams to fire. 4th Edition states that you can fire through stationary friendly infantry teams. So more teams can shoot but that also means that more teams can defensive fire and potentially stop an assault.
Going forward, my hard hitting Gurkha Company are less viable but my Churchill Crocodile flame tanks become far more useful!
Good tactics info… Thanks Gerry.
Determined attack is the best tctic for me. Pound heavily and move, move, move. Always ahead, immer weiter.
Lot of build up. Looking forward to seeing a game being played.
Justin loving his Russians
Interesting ideas on tactics.
@avernos My little fella and I were in the background when you shot this tactics piece, (little boy in green mac towers end of piece), anyway to today at today at Giants Causeway he asked if Finn McCool was as tall as the the guy with the beard in OTT. I told him you taller lol
poor old Finn, always in the shadow of a taller giant
Yes the German anti-tanks are dangerous!
Captain Alpha Strike! XD
😀
Looks like a great place to start.
Nice set in the new box.
I think German army is a little bit stronger than Americans in this starter set.
they’re easier for a beginner, but both armies are very close when you know what you’re doing.
Agree, I played Poles in last edition and it was almosty impossible to win with germans but I was playing against good gamers, I should play CCCP with my mentality of green horde charge,
Always nice to get a few tips on how to play a force from someone with a bit of experience in the game.
the more I see about that boxed set, the more I want lots of them 😀
I love how the forces are asymmetrical but still can provide a fair game, I also like how the asymmetry is a way to teach the game.
I like it!
The German infantry and Pak40 guns should be dug in on objectives. They will be the wall upon which the US forces will fling themselves. The Panzer IVs can help the defence by mounting a counter offensive once the US advance is slowed.
My best/most fun games are the ones where I dont over think it. Nothing worse than that guy who takes way to long to make decisions on the table.
nice to see, games played with painted forces.
