Nice one Jim this may get some folks into playing WWI game’s.
Artillery hunted Artillery in the first war. I remember seeing a story was about they have spotters at the front watching for the gunfire of the enemy guns to get the position to their guns. Because I was thinking this could be a good was to get some excitement in boring school algebra classes.

Indeed, the only REAL difference between WW1 and WW2 artillery (at least in tactical wargaming terms) is the lack of flexibility in WW1. Basically, no radios. Pre-planned artillery barrages, creeping barrages, phased barrages, and the counter-battery barrages you mention were all certainly factors, it just had to be meticulously planned in advance.
