Tagged: Deadzone
I am looking for a simple wargame system to play with a 7-year old boy (my nephew 🙂
So far, I think One-Page Rule Skirmish/firefight system would be a good choice, but I was wondering if anyone had other suggestions.
Also, I have never try One-Page Grimdark Firefight rule, so I was looking for opinions on that system.
Thank you for any feedback 🙂
I introduced my son to Tanks during lockdown (he’s 8 now), simple and straight forward enough for him – he has now progressed to 40K!
I would recommend Deadzone, it’s simple, fast, with plenty of scope for tactical decision making once you’ve got the basics down and more importantly fun. Using the same minis you can progress onto Firefight and Warpath if they take your fancy.
If Battlemasters had existed when I was that age, I would have been over the moon over it. Visually stunning and all the most basic elements of tabletop wargaming condensed to the absolute bare bones minimum. Also makes a spectacular gift, even if used.
I’d recommend FUBAR. Simple. Single page. A lot of variants available for era or lore. And it’s all free. Gives a fun game that I realize is deeply complex the more I play it but doesn’t feel complex.
Here is the link
Thanks for the quick anwers!
I will check these systems and probably pick up the simplest one.
There are also solo/cooperative games like 5 parsecs from home, 5 leagues from the borderlands and Rangers of shadowdeep.
Burrows and Badgers, and What a Tanker! are worth a look too
Ooh, some bedtime reading.
My eldest is five and has been asking about daddy’s toys. I shall be cribbing some notes to see if I can find something he might be interested in getting involved with once he gets a handle on some basic arithmatic.
Deadzone would be ideal. Leave the tape measure on the shelf, just count cubes for movement and weapon range, very intuitive.
Small footprint, scales well from a handful of minis to a dozen or more, and will work well even if you strip it down to basics and add command dice and items later on in the learning process.
Check out Gerry’s review of the newest 2-player box. Everything you need in there:

To chuck in my tuppenny worth. I can highly recommend John Lambshead One-~Hour Skirmish wargames. They are a simple set of rules with a depth to them and very easy to learn. All you need is two packs of playing cards.
Relicblade is a cracking game for young uns. It’s super simple and doesn’t take up much space, needing only a 2×2′ board. Pretty much everything you need is on easy to read cards and it’s got a lovely comic book art style
