For now at least. I’ve been playing around with ways to get down paint quickly using speed paints over my last few projects. I realise I make it sound more impressive than it really is. For my Sludge and Killteam projects I started with a black basecoat and a white drybrush, over which I went with the speed paints. In this project, I started with a black basecoat and then went with a white zenith, followed up by speed paints. I can hear you gasp. Yes. What technique! What you will notice is that the first Doomed minis got a zenith from one position only. This does lend something of a primitive OSL, which is nice, but somewhat awkward when they’re all facing away from you and you’re looking at mostly black backs… Thus, for the second batch I went for a zenith from one angle, but then from two-sides-ish. Quite happy how that turned out.

There they are. Look at that magnificent bunch! Very proud how they turned out. Of these, only the Marshall (the purple guy at the back) is from the first batch and therefore has a dark back. You can see that in the Lloyd shot below.

I’m also very happy with this warband, although you will see that most of them have dark backs due to the single side zenith I used. The jousting drone in fact also belongs to this group, but the fact that they have a large flat top, means that it would catch paint in most areas anyway. Also, I don’t use the speed paint metallics, but regular ones. This means that dark areas will have a (drybrushed) metallic on them.

You may ask yourself who the alien-looking chap is. My friend got lucky on his Doom roll for the next scenario, which means that he was able to recruit a quality 5+ warrior from any faction. He went with a Spotter from the Exiled Bands, who have an extra-terrestrial warrior look to them. The rifle over the shoulder may look weird. I removed the existing trigger and glued on a random bit to the side that probably functions as part of the alien firing mechanism. I was inspired by the below piece of Exiled Bands artwork from the book. I really liked the weird layout of the “rifle” carried by the insect-like warrior.

(If you’re wondering what my Doom roll got me: my commander got beaten up by high command, which means he enters the scenario late from a board edge selected by my opponent. Just my luck…)

Here are the painted minis that are currently not in a warband, together with the Devourer from our first scenario. I put him up there as well since I included it when I was basing everyone. Oh! I’m also happy with the basing mixture I’ve found: I mix up wood glue, black and brown paint and a bunch of sand. Slap it on. After that I added some grass tufts and walked away.

You’ll never see it coming...You’ll never see it coming...

And last, but not least, my horror for the next scenario: the Chameleonic! The book gives a short description of a lithe hidden murder machine that lurks in the shadows. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any bits that seemed appropriate or that inspired me. Then it struck me I still had this alternative Mimic lying around. I mean, it did seem to fit the bill. Also, it is hilarious.
