Mythic Battles: Pantheon Demo Game
October 30, 2016 by dignity
It's time for us to battle as mighty Gods as Leo from Mythic Games joins us and runs us through a game of Mythic Battles: Pantheon.
This is an epic game where our titanic Gods clash with heroic warriors and terrifying beasts in a battle for control.
Who will come out on top between Warren and Justin? You can also check out The Weekender XLBS where we talk tactics with Leo in an after action report.
Do you like the look of Mythic Battles: Pantheon?

Looking forward to this
Even if it is not playing yet …
Ok, I am sold
Hi team. .. its not playing.. saying “This video is private”…
Should play now, every year without fail the switch to GMT causes a snafu! Lol
Ohhh that time of the year again …
What an interesting game …. minis are beautiful …… and the result ….. =)
that opening is more than a bit bloody impressive, npw on to see how the gameplays
Quick question. was this your BoW cell-shading on these models?
Just one step short, no quickshade or matt spray on the models leo brought over. 🙂
I have to admit: when @warzan said he was going for elegance, I snorted tea out my nose.
lol wait and see 😉
“I’m in a killy mood” – So much for elegance lol
Warren, when you used Athena’s strategist ability for the second time (just after you ran through your deck), I don’t think you searched your deck for any three cards. You tried to spend an AoW card to search for another unit and Justin pointed out that you couldn’t because you’d already done that to search for Athena, but you would have had all the cards you needed for that activation.
Ill have to keep that in mind for next time!
It would also have put three extra cards in your hand so you weren’t then having to dop deck in subsequent turns.
Great game, like the way that you draft your force.
Love the tactical possibilities you have.
I am definitely going to back this.
Absolutely.Awesomely. Fantastic. Thank you Leo for bringing this in to the Beasts of War Studio. The outstanding game of the year.
…..i’ve Always hated Zone movement Wargames….UNTILL NOW!!!…..Absolutely Amazing!!!!!….And you can play this 4 vs 4Free For All or 2 vs 2 Team Deathmatch Right out of the Box….I definetely Need to get this!!!!!…
Haven’t even properly unpacked my Conan game and I’m already looking forward to this! TITANIC!
DAMN YOU BOW! I have to go and back this as well now. Looks amazing!!
How come a tree protects from shooting but a stone pillars doesn’t?
The ruins give you the bonus in melee
Yeah, but they should also hinder missile fire as well, no?
It’s obviously primarily an abstract-ish gameplay thing, but the basic principle is that’s it’s hard to see someone within a forest when standing without, and so a bonus to defending ranged attacks, whilst ruins have uneven ground and make it difficult for someone to attack you up close 🙂
Is this a kickstarter?
@salty not yet, should start on Tuesday, I thought it is mentioned in the weekender.
A few times the boys said that the card were prototypes.. I think they look great as they are shown. I like the round ‘coaster’ style, the size, etc. Not sure what the final product would improve, but I give this design two thumbs up. 🙂
I will looking into it… this game looks like so much fun.
Hope there will be new Gods as Stretchgoal, looking forward to Hermes and Poseidon, and I need Scylla and Charybdis. We also need a Map of the Rhodos Harbour, with the Colossus guarding the Harbour.
Or maybe the Colossus as playable mini 🙂
Looks amazing ….. when is it on Kickstarter….
It’s on Kickstarter on Tuesday, I’m definitely in for this. I received my Conan stuff on Thursday and that blew me away but anything based upon Greek mythology is right up my street.
I like the “how many fours can I build?” dice-jiggering.
Is there a pledge level that includes Leo to sit with your gaming group and explain everything? 🙂 Failing that, a very good set of tutorial missions in the rules would be necessary.
There is an intro scenario in the rulebook which uses set forces (which are a bit smaller), and leaves out a couple of things. The dice mechanic is very quick to pick up. The main issue I had, and it was very minor, was in remembering what the Talents did as they’re listed on the character board but not described, and what the symbols were for the Powers, but when I then played it with a reference sheet it was very easy just to check (kinda like having Leo there lol).
Wow, this game has everything going for it!
What strikes me about this is that the mechanics are simple enough but as the guys say, offer the players enough influence to negate it being random chance, it also has the added benefit of using a theme that everyone should have atleast a little knowledge of. Everyone knows atleast one Greek myth, each character is recognisable and the style of the art and miniatures doesn’t take too much artistic licence so you can identify any of these characters at a glance.
I didn’t comment on the The Edge: Dawnfall let’s play as I only had negative feedback so I kept it to myself (aren’t I nice?) it wasn’t cinematic in the least in my opinion but this game, this proves how a game can be cinematic and not complicated.
Also, I have to mention the level of abstraction, the “zones” are perfect, what a way to give you freedom, they aren’t overly abstract like say…..hexes….ahem…. but they are free enough to eliminate measurement rules which always slow games down and also “snapping” to certain areas on a stricter grid!
And that dice mechanic! It reminds me of the effect Infinity has when someone describes it to you, you go “……huh? O__O” but then once you see it in practice, my Gods! (see what I did there?) it all comes together! Which brings me back to the first point, as Warren and Justin have said, it gives the player so much control over random events.
Also, I wanna praise the card mechanics. Alot of games force you to draw cards and discard them and they end up feeling like a bolt on. This game feeds you cards slowly and makes you really choose how to manage resource. I noticed the Gods only had enough special rules to allow them to use cards in a way that only slightly increased their usage, not flooding the player with too many options, although that was only 2 Gods I have seen, there may be one who floods cards, who knows!
So! Now I have ranted about how much this game has impressed me, I’m going to swoon at it and wish I had more room in the gaming cupboard….
Have they stated a provisional release date yet?
Wow this game Rocks and it’s another kikstarter and my wallet is almost empty Harrrggg witch one am i going to chose
Just pulled out the Spartan mini from my Conan Kickstarter and it looks really great! Will post a pic once we decide how we are going to paint it.
Wow this game has a lot going for it. Great theme, great miniatures, great gameplay. Kind of a cross between boardgame and tabletop war game. Love it! I just hope the retail minis will look half as good as those.
Those are the pre-production minis so the final ones will be a little better as there’s still a few kinks to work out in the moulds. They’ve obviously been primed to show the detail off under the camera, but that’s essentially what you’re going to get 🙂
This is the closest thing I’ve seen to my “Dream Game” –
1. Stunning minis – Check!
2.Awesome Settings – Check!
3. Card play – Check!
4. Drafting (Holy c%*!) – Check!
5. Self-contained game in a box – Check!
6. Streamlined and tactical – Check!
Wallet gonna take one hell of a hit when the kickstarter launches
Loving this game… Especially the more… strategic characters… a lot of time in games the “smarter characters” just give static bonuses… important but no sifferent from the “charismatic” characters. Here odyseus feels like this great leader whose presence allows you more flexibility, as apposed to Leonidas who actually has a stronger ability for troops but not nearly as flexible
Have known since I first saw the Ares miniature months ago that I had to back this 🙂 So happy its finally here 🙂
Do we know how much the game pledge is going to be?
Also, I hope they keep it simple and don’t turn their kickstarter into stretch goal bonzana and then we get 2 years of delays ><
There will be a lot of stretch goals if the campaign is successful as it’s that type of big box campaign (and it’ll be incredible value if it does). The good news is that a lot of the work has already been done. My understanding is that all of the artwork and all of the sculpting has been done, the core box minis are almost finished tooling (as we can see in the video 🙂 ) and the games design is done (at least for the core box). The campagn was always intended to have a long lead time to let as much get done as possible before the campaign, but because Monolith are involved in they didn’t want to start this before Conan had started fulfillment, they had even more time to prep.
Just seen that Leo has mentioned on FB that the pledge level will be $100. Might be worth checking when the campaign goes live to see if there are any Early Birds.
Thanks for the info Ben, I don’t facebook so that’s very appreciated.
And I’ve just now seen Monolith confirm that there will be Early Bird pledges 🙂
I enjoyed the match while I was painting and organizing. Seems to be a well developed game.
Oh, do you guys think that in the future we will see more Pantheons? Norse mythologie would be nice ^^
Think the Q & A did mention that if (/when) this is a success, they can see it grow in that way
See @brennon s Q&A
If you’re a backstager then check out issue #2 of Re-Roll to read the interview with Leo. I think it’s only up for a few more days. If you’re not a backstager, sign up for a seven day free trial, download Re-Roll, and take a lot around the site at all the extra content 🙂
As soon as Warren picked Cerberus I knew he would win – how could a force with a giant 3-headed Staffy Bull-terrier that breathes flames lose? 🙂
Curse you guys for showing such an attractive game! Great minis and intriguing mechanics.
So it’s not just the models that are amazing. The game is awesome too. I like pretty much everything about this, from the drafting of forces to the dice management and the tactical use of Art of War cards.
Cant wait, its one more to for the win. Brill
Anyone else notice Scylla on the back shelf!?! Amazing game, amazing minis and sounds like an amazing kickstarter! Wasn’t going to back them after the wait for Arcadia Quest but as need to now!!
This game looks amazing, it really has so much going for it. I think this has cemented within me the idea that minaitures board games are the level of hobby I can support time and hobby wise
Dagnabbit this looked awesome on the weekender preview and now watching the game it looks even better. Don’t know how I can $$ another kickstarter, but I needs it!
A quick request to anyone thinking of backing Mythic Battles: Pantheon, or who just wants to see the campaign do well :). If you have a BGG account, or don’t mind creating one if you haven’t, could you add a rating to the game if you feel like you can give one, and more importantly could you add the game to your Hotlist?
If you’re not sure how to do the latter, just click on your username (just below where your mailbox icon is), that will bring you to the ‘Games’ tab of your account, scroll down to the botttom right and just below where the list of rankings you’ve given is, there’s a link there called ‘Hot 10′, just click on it and type out ‘Mythic Battles: Pantheon’ and it should come up for you to select and add.

Thanks 🙂
Justin, kinda the pot calling the kettle black when you called Warren a coward for putting Athena behind the rock and then you don’t bring Zeus out so he can’t be killed.
Those minis are gorgeous, and I’m usually a “tank” guy. Looking at the Athena miniature now. Wow. Beautiful, in every sense of the word. 😀 She’s definitely “all woman,” without being cheap or sleazy.
Favorite moment so far; 50:30, when @warzan is talking about the resilience of Achilles.
“Yeah, but Achilles is ‘un-killies.'”
😀
Okay, another great moment from @dignity at 52:50:
“When someone asks if you can throw a god, you say YES!”
YES! to the did we enjoy the game, will we be getting this game YES!
SOLD!!!
Leo has recorded a video update ahead of the KS. The big news is that the KS exclusive mini with the core set pledge is…..
Apollo!
Yes, that’s a fifth god to along with the Zeus, Hades, Athena, and Ares. As I say, this is KS exclusive so presumably won’t be available at retail. In other news, the pledge level is $100 or $90 for an Early Bird, and that gets you the core set, Apollo, and all unlocked stretch goals.
There’s a lot more in the video, some of which has already been covered here, some which hasn’t. Enjoy!

Wow – what a great playthrough – truly appreciate the excitement and view of what is to be expected with the kickstarter.
Well this is a breath of fresh air. What a beautiful combination of setting, art, miniatures and rules.
I’ve gone a bit cold on Kickstarter recently, as I was finding that most of my excitement about a game ebbed away by the time the box arrived a year later (if you’re lucky). But I’m definitely going for this one.
Game looks great, I’m very excited about the KS tomorrow!
Amazing minis given that they are plastic and really neat looking game too! Very tempted to back the KS now 🙂
I thought the theme and the beautiful mini was worth it but now I see the game play I want the game even more. I just want to see more gods that is the only thing missing and I hope the stretch goal add those.
We know of at least some more that are coming. Anyone who backs the KS is getting an exclusive Apollo, we’ve seen sculpts for Poseidon and Atlas (I’m assuming the titans will count as gods), and concept art for Aphrodite. Given that the background to the game involves Hera opening up Tartarus to let the titans out I’m assuming she will be in the game plus other titans too, at the very least Kronos.
@redben Titans when they unlock are a whole new level up 🙂
Big buggers too!
I’ve just remembered that we saw Prometheus in the Weekender too 🙂
What a great game, love the power on each unit or good, you can just do anything each turn but just once, a bit confusing dice mechanics rerolls but reading manual will solve for sure.
Maybe i look into ks but dont know just recived conan and tríed yesterday and has a lot of fun on this Also many many things on my queue…
Mm well done mates at mithyc Games and monolith.
The dice mechanic is one of those things that seems complicated to explain but is actually very simple to use. All you need to remember is that blanks are automatic misses, fives can be re-rolled, and you can sacrfice any die (other than a blank) to add +1 to any other die (other than a blank). If by adding in this way you take a die up to five, then you can re-roll it. It often means that you have a choice between getting the most amount of fives that you can so you can try and re-roll them to cause lots of wounds but risk not causing any, or buying one or two guaranteed wounds 🙂
What was confusing me at first when I was trying to understand the dice mechanics is the re-rolls on 5… I’m used to re-rolls being about replacing the old result (like re-rolling a bad dice), but in this case it’s about adding the new roll to the 5.
It would have been cleaner to roll additional dice for each 5 and add the result, but I guess they didn’t do it this way to avoid mixing up those new dice with the initial dice pool. They could use two colours of dice though, like red for the “added re-rolls”, and it would work.
I think me using the term ‘re-roll’ as a short-hand for ‘re-roll and add’ is probably adding to the confusion. As you say, that is more commonly used on its own to refer to rolling the die again and havng the new result instead. This way of rolling dice is sometimes called exploding the dice, which might have been a better term for me to use.
The throw mechanic is spectacular gives Also a mighty flavorto the game!
This is fantastic, beautiful minis, elegant gameplay. I’m gonna hve to back this one.
Just over ten minutes till the Kickstarter launches 🙂
This looks quite similar to The Edge: Dawnfall. I’d be curious to hear a comparison.
Is it the camera ankle or do some of the minis look strangely “flat”…especially how they hold the shields?
