Empress Gather More Soldiers For The Indian Mutiny Range
February 5, 2016 by brennon
Empress Miniatures have just picked up a whole bunch of new models for their Indian Mutiny range. However, these won't be on the webstore for a while but should be available at a wargaming show in York soon...
This is by no means the whole selection but it gives you a taster of the miniatures for the mutineers that they will be offering. I really like the character they've bought out of these soldiers all of whom look incredibly believable and realistic.
This final set here is the one that really grabbed my attention. I love the look of the uniforms and the facial expressions look great. While I have little to no knowledge of this period of history I would love to see someone bring it to life in a diorama and fill me in a little on its history.
What do you think?

Not a conflict I have played but these figures are really tempting. So full of character
I don’t know much about it, @brennon , but the basics of the Indian Mutiny are a build up of grievances by the Indians against the East India Company that was ruling India at the time. It came to a head when the Indian Sepoys (Indian soldiers in British service) heard a rumour that pig and cow fat was being used to grease the cartridges they were given and had to bite open. Most Sepoys were either Hindu or Muslim and thus couldn’t touch pig or cow products for religious reasons. When the Company prove unsympathetic (and used the phrase ‘bite the bullet’ meaning to bite the bullet in the cartridge to open it) the mutiny began and spread across India. It led to the end of Company Rule in India and the formation of the British Raj under Victoria as Empress of India. You can always learn more on the interwebs, though, and if I am wrong here I will be more than happy to be corrected. Indian Mutiny is not my specialty. 😛
Those figures are sculpted by the very talented Mr Paul Hicks who is, IMHO, the best historical figure sculptor on the market and most of Empress’s ranges are done by him.
As for the first Indian Rebellion as it is now know the causes are a little more complex than above.
Causes of the Mutiny
In the years just prior to the mutiny many factors combined to create a climate of social and political unrest in India. The political expansion of the East India Company at the expense of native princes and of the Mughal court aroused Hindu and Muslim alike, and the harsh land policies, carried out by Governor-General Dalhousie and his successor, Lord Canning, as well as the rapid introduction of European civilization, threatened traditional India. In 1853, Nana Sahib, leader of the Marathas, was denied his titles and pension by the British, and the aged Bahadur Shah II, last of the Mughal emperors, was informed that the dynasty would end with his death.
The Indian soldiers were dissatisfied with their pay as well as with certain changes in regulations, which they interpreted as part of a plot to force them to adopt Christianity. This belief was strengthened when the British furnished the soldiers with cartridges coated with grease made from the fat of cows (sacred to Hindus) and of pigs (anathema to Muslims). The British replaced the cartridges when the mistake was realized; but suspicion persisted, and in Feb., 1857, began a series of incidents in which sepoys refused to use the cartridges.
They’re looking good. Very tempting
