UK Games Expo 2016 Live Blog!
Join us in Birmingham as we're going to be taking a look at what's on offer here at the UK Games Expo; one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) events on the tabletop gaming calender that runs from the 3rd - 5th June 2016.
The event has now moved to both the NEC and the Hilton Metropole. The NEC has been given over to a massive array of board games, miniatures games, and more where you can buy, play and of course talk to some of the designers behind these great games.

We think this is going to be a great day so if you're interested in learning more about this great event follow along and let us know what you'd like to see.
Will you be coming along?
Blogging At This Event:
Alessio Shows Off Labyrinth
River Horse show off Labyrinth and show off the brilliant miniatures.
Of course Alessio dressed up too
Neat New Dungeon Tiles
See what you make of these new Dungeon Tiles. They work on Sci Fi ones too. Theyou come painted and with a nice cushioned Base.
They are also working on a dungeon crawler game which looked very cool.
Catching Up With Hawk Wargames
These guys have new plans for what's coming in Dropfleet including some full ships and sprues to show off.
Additionally they are also working on bringing new books and more to Dropzone so that they can keep expanding on the world.
More to come from these guys later today.
Stopping In With Open Combat
As well as looking at plenty of board games (of which there are many to come!) we also took a look at Open Combat
This is a very great looking tabletop wargame which is based around making the factions YOU want to make. This means designing their stats and all sorts. It's very open ended - hence the name.
Also comes with funky dice.
Lantern
This is a great looking card game where you are trying to work your way through the shadows while the darkness and everything else is out to get you.
You need to monitor your own lantern level with oil and also avoid you and your friends turning into monsters!
Afterlife’s Compact Rulebook Is Out
As well as all of the awesome stuff miniatures wise it's good to see that the Afterlife Rulebook from Anvil is now out.
They have Starter Sets on sale as well as plenty of other miniatures from the range.
Now For Some Board Games – Hope
We're now going to check out some board games. This one is called Hope where you work on trying to save the collapsing universe as it vanishes one galaxy at a time.
At the moment they have this prototype but they are working towards Kickstarter in June/July of this year and they have some fun ships and more on the way.
The board is even an optical illusion!
Having A Few WiFi Problems
I'm currently having a few WiFi problems so if we don't get a lot into the Live Blog for the time being there's been a slow down with everyone using it!
Will keep you updated but keep following for more news.
Scythe – An Alternative History For Eastern Europe
We looked at this game a while back when it was on Kickstarter. Here you are controlling a character from an industrial power house nation fighting for control of a county in Eastern Europe,
The miniatures for these are superb and the big thing for me was that it also includes some neat event cards where you have to make choices on what you want to do - be bad, be good or somewhere in between?
All the characters have different mechs and there are plans to take this game to 7 players in the end.
Dropfleet Ships Painted...
See what you make of these epic ships from Dropfleet.
And of course epic big boards from Hawk as always.
What's On The Cards From Oathsworn?
Oathsworn Miniatures have been creating wonderful miniatures for a while now and they have stepped out of Burrows & Badgers (which is available to buy here) and into the world of Heroines In Sensible Shoes with another Kickstarter soon.
This range is really packed with character and we love it!
What do you think?
An Update For Dark Age & Wrath Of Kings
In addition to all of their board games the Dark Age & Wrath Of Kings trains are still rolling. Here we have some new models for the CORE in Dark Age and in addition some Wrath Of Kings characters too...
They are working on getting plenty more of these miniatures into the UK but the big Starter Box is the thing everyone is snapping up here.
Pandemic Cthulhu!
This is a great take on the world of Pandemic where instead of a disease you're trying to stop Cthulhu and the other Elder Gods from being summoned onto the tabletop.
Here you can see some of the fantastic plastic miniatures that they've been working on which look great in the flesh.
I reckon this one will be a proper hit.
Huge Miniatures and Starter Sets From Mierce
The guys from Mierce have a big new spider and all of their Starter Warbands here today.
You can come and pick their miniatures up and if you have time, chat to the creator.
Ghostel!
This is another board game that we looked at on Kickstarter via The Weekender. It's all about chasing people out of your hotel as Ghosts and looks like a fantastic game for the family.
It comes with smaller components than this in reality with these big ones for show today.
This one looks a lot of fun and they've got some great artwork to boot.
Lunch Time
Munching on some great world food. Loads of awesome grub here!
Plastic Soldier Company Take On The Battle Of Britain
Here we have a larger version of the new game from Plastic Soldier Company where you will be taking on the forces of the Germans and British during the Battle of Britain.
A game for 2 to 4 players this will see you commanding squadrons on bombing runs and trying to battle each other in the skies. It has a nice push your luck element to it with the combat and the way in which you deal with your fuel.
Additionally it will be on Kickstarter soon so watch out for it. This one looks very fun. The models will be smaller (obviously) in green and grey plastic.
The Event Space Is Massive
The UK Games Expo is now spread over two venues so it not only encompasses the Hilton Metropole (God Bless Their Wifi!) but also the NEC.
Most of the main action is over there in the NEC where they are demoing games, showing off new products and of course selling a huge amount of stuff too.
While miniatures are here they aren't the biggest attraction as most of the attention is focused towards board and card games.
Considering the growth of board and card games though miniatures are here in force and they have plenty of people crowded around to look at the miniatures and more.
Lonewolf - The Battle For Magnamund
Here we have a neat board game/miniatures game using card board cut outs based on the artwork from the Lonewolf series and its adventuring books.
The game is very simple to play and comes absolutely packed with battlefields, characters, heroes and monsters. It's a really interesting prospect for those people who like 'wargaming' but don't want to paint models.
Interestingly it also comes with some smaller skirmish based scenarios where you're playing with only a few troops or even just a hero.
Battle Systems Showing Off New Sci-Fi Terrain
Here we have a proper look at the new Sci-Fi terrain by Battle Systems. They have been working on making a Sci-Fi set of terrain which bridges the barrier between their original Kickstarter project and their Post-Apocalyptic range. This fits somewhere in the middle.
This is a simple selection of the terrain along with a game that they actually play together when they want to test the terrain to see how fun it is to play around on - how cool!
Looking beyond that they have LOADS of new plans for new terrain as they build on existing projects.
Creature College & Snail Ninjas!
Going back to the world of board games, here we have this neat looking family game that the designer created so he could play with his kids.
You play as various monsters/creatures trying to make your way through school while along the way you win victory points from all sorts of adventures. It has a wonderful art style, great components and looks like it could be a winner.
He was also showing off his new game filled with Snail Ninjas trying to win glory. This is a neat and quick game for people to play in between bigger games.
Wizards Academy
Fancy rushing around as a Wizard?
This is Harry Potter meets Magicika as you run around Wizard school not knowing what spells you're casting. There are ten different scenarios in the game to play including an ofsted inspection!
Odds & Ends...and Tables!
It wouldn't be Gaming without neat add ons. They are also selling books, art, furniture and more.
Devils Run Route 666
The game did well on Kickstarter and is now delivering to backers.
Next time they are looking to add another expansion through Kickstarter and maybe more.
The Board Game Library
You can pick up games to play on loan during the day which is cool.
You simply pick them up, go to the demo area and get gaming.
Dark Ops Terrain
These guys have been doing some great terrain for Frost grave, Sci Fi, Dungeon Saga and more.
Their big thing is more historical stuff like Greek Triremes and a Viking Longboat
Stand & Deliver! Highwaymen
Another board game for you now with a flair of the Highwayman about it - I reckon Flashheart is around here somewhere slapping his thigh.
This sees you playing as a group of Highwaymen trying to rob a stagecoach as it barrels down a country road. As you shoot it, loot comes out and you'll be picking it up.
However it's richest Highwayman who wins so you might move your foes into bad positions to have the coach driver shoot back in anger.
This game is currently on Kickstarter so go and check it out!
ArcWorlde’s Battle For Troll Bridge Stunningly Painted
The forces of Warploque Miniatures' ArcWorlde - Battle For Troll Bridge have been painted up really nicely for their game here at the Expo.
You can see the three full faction forces you can play as plus the enigmatic Troll himself.
The models for this game always impress and it has garnered a lot of attention.
Playing Ice Cool!
This is a fun dexterity (flicking) game where one player is chasing the others round a penguin school.
It's a lot of fun and had us howling with laughter.
Playing Haba Games!
We played some more fun little games like Dancing Eggs and Zitternix.
The first game involves you keeping eggs on your person while the other makes a nest of sticks to keep eggs held up.
Cornwall
This might sound dry but it was a lot of fun.
In Cornwall you are trying to control area of Cornwall and head to the pub which is neat.
You are trying to control regions and score points whilst making sure you don't end up with many drunken workers.
It feels like an extension to Carcassonne.
Delving Into Tides Of Time
This is a simple drafting game where you are trying to create a wondrous civilisation.
You have to choose cards that help you while denying the opponent.
I also won which was a rarity!
Tok Tok Woodsman
We’re now playing another fun game for the family called Tok Tok.
Here you have to knock bark off the tree without knocking the white wood free. 1 point for bark and -5 for the proper wood.
Above & Below
This is a great game which is part worker placement and part choose your own adventure.
This has a wonderful art style and amazing stories too. A great game worth checking out.
Uuuu some goodies from Hawk 🙂
Man, I wish I could have made it to the UKGE this year. Say hi to Rob Alderman and Mark Rapson for me 🙂
I will try too 🙂
Great coverage and games. Thanks for this, @brennon . Drop Fleet commander looks especially interesting. 🙂
No worries, Thank you 🙂
Dropflet just looks more incredible everytime I see it.
Only thing that worries me is the fact I still have zero idea how Im going to paint it lmao
ha … I’m more worried about getting it all assembled.
I’ve got this orca/whale theme for the PHR in my head.
I’m not sure if I have the skill to make it work though.
Sweet. Can’t wait to see all the stuff they have there. Hopefully you have enough time to get all of it on the blog. Also hopefully you can get some interviews with some of them. If you can try and get Hawk Wargames, CoolminiorNot (particularly about Dark Age), and Mierce Miniatures.
@brennon I’m playing in the X wing tournament today if you fancy coming over for a beer?
I am impressed with Labyrinth, the game play was awesome but the miniatures are incredible. I like the Battle of Britain, now if I could only get my wife to dress up in a uniform and take orders from me as she pushes around the little airplanes my life would be complete. The last item which caught my eye was the super detailed terrain by Battle Systems. To play on a table like that, WOW. Nice job, on the reporting and pictures!
The Battle of Britain sounds awesome you’re right 🙂
Great coverage @brennon but where is Euro Trucker?
In my shopping bag 😉
Must make it there next year…
It’s a lot of fun!
The new battlesystem set looks as awesome as ever, and I’m liking the look of the Battle of Britain game.
Only going to be able to be there for Saturday and so looking forward to it. Going to be a rush though to get to see everything I want to see. I still remember when I first went a couple of years ago and had a fun game of Crokinole with Ben.
Can’t recommend the Dark Ops buildings enough. Bought their 10mm buildings at Carronade Show this year. Brilliantly engineered. Wish these guys well. The company is Pezzapoo and Smudger of youtube
I did not know that! Will have to grab a few, Pezzapoo does some great DZC paint schemes, I totally replicated his Scourge palette with a couple of tweaks, top man.
Off to the expo tomorrow, can’t wait…..
Great coverage Ben! Thanks!
Just wondering if you’re gonna show the new x-wing miniatures their showing at the expo?
I’ve got pics of this but my phone won’t let me post them. I’ll get them up first chance I get if no one else does.
Christian Peterson, the head honcho of FFG, is at the show, Ben. Might be worth tracking down for a quick interview.
i looked but could not see you mate 🙁 you there tomorrow?
Will be back on Saturday so might see you about 🙂
Looks great. I think I need to make the effort and spend a couple of days in Brum next year.
Will be there on Sunday
@brennon would you be able to put links for the custom gaming paraphernalia?
Title of section is “Odds & Ends…and Tables!” or are they just there for that?
Will find out for you
@brennon. I want to apologise for bumping into you and calling the head from BOW.
Was good to finally meet you @brennon 🙂
