Community Spotlight: Mighty Castles, Imperial Guard & More…Imperial Guard?!
April 1, 2026 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Motte & Bailey by commodorerob
We start this week with a look at what commodorerob has been getting up to as they work on building an awesome castle for use in The Barons' War. The castle in question is the best of the castles out there. I do like a good stone castle but a Motte & Bailey is another level of awesome.
The Motte & Bailey you see here was a 3D-printable kit from Bambulab, picked up last year during a Black Friday sale. It certainly does the job and gives you a good basis to work from for crafting an awesome Motte & Bailey for the tabletop.
With over fifty pieces to print separately and then glue together, this is quite the mammoth undertaking but it looks like it is slowly but surely coming into its own. commodorerob has gone through all of the steps that went into building the Motte & Bailey, whilst also talking through the process of painting it as well.
You'll note that the Motte & Bailey comes with both a standard wooden build for the top but also a stone tower, which can be used should commodorerob want to go a little fancy with the setup. That could be good for different periods within the Medieval but also fun for a Fantasy wargame as well.
Even though this was a TerrainFest 2025 project, there's no reason why the work can't be continued and commodorerob has been doing a great job working through the different elements of this castle, especially doing all of the natural-looking greenery stretching up the sides of the mound. It looks really good.
Everyone needs a castle in their collection and I think this ticks a lot of boxes. You could use this for the end of the Dark Age period and all throughout the Early Medieval, depending on where you set your battles. It also works for later periods as well. Not all of the Barons would have been so lucky as to have the money to upgrade their Motte & Bailey into full, stone castles!
Imperial Guard by civilcourage
We now move on to some awesome Imperial Guard from civilcourage. This project is a combination of different Warhammer 40,000 forces into one big narrative but it also comes alongside respective Epic armies and Battlefleet Gothic ships as well. The idea is to focus on collecting and hobbying in a different way.
The idea here is to try and collect an Imperial army, starting with the Imperial Guard or Astra Militarum, that has a narrative focus rather than simply building to suit an army list. As civilcourage says as part of their project, the focus here is to try and make an Astra Militarum force which feels like a more regular army rather than some elite force that ticks all the right boxes.
What's nice is that this is a great selection of different miniatures from civilcourage that have come from classic Warhammer 40,000 that really speak to me. This was the era of Warhammer that I first got involved with and absolutely loved. I also really like the painting from civilcourage, going with the white armour. I think it looks excellent. Very clean and unique to the Imperial Guard of Warhammer 40,000.
It has also been fun to see civilcourage working through all sorts of different miniatures and just painting whatever they liked from their collection. I also have to commend the cool basing, which works so nicely to frame the miniatures!
I am fascinated to see where this goes from civilcourage and what's next. It is tied into Epic and Battlefleet Gothic collections as well but I can't wait to see where this Imperial Guard force goes as they introduce other elements beyond the Astra Militarum/Imperial Guard. For example, there's no reason that this narrative force couldn't include more from the Mechanicus or even Space Marines. Heck, even Agents of the Imperium! We've already seen some priests who look brilliant, especially digging back into those classic sculpts.
Custom Imperial Guard by elessar2590
Last but not least, we're having a look at what elessar2590 has been working on for their own custom Imperial Guard. They really wanted to make an army but didn't want to do the classic Cadians, Krieg or what-have-you. So, they took inspiration from a Historical kit and started doing some digital kitbashing.
The original inspiration for this set of Imperial Guard came from the Irish at Jadotville release by Wargames Atlantic over on Atlantic Digital. The ragtag nature of these soldiers, where they all felt like they had a unique character to them, especially when it comes to their headwear! All that happened from this point was the addition of some Sci-Fi elements (as you can see above and below) which then made them feel like they fit into the setting of Warhammer 40,000.
Kitbashin ain't dead and it's continuing when it comes to the 3D environment as well, it seems! I like the addition of a few distinct canteens and such, which can draw the eye and make these soldiers feel more Sci-Fi. You don't need a lot for these to suddenly feel like your standard Guardsman from a world that you've yet to really discover in Warhammer 40,000. A unique sandbox for you to play in!
elessar2590 breaks down how all of this has been done over on their project, delving into the process of crafting the different weapons as well as the placement of the various elements that you see above.
I think these Imperial Guard are looking excellent and a nice step in the right direction towards creating a unique army for use on the tabletop. I really appreciated the background to this project and the fact that it's kitbashing but in a different style.
