Mythic Games Chat: The World Of Solomon Kane
June 20, 2018 by dracs
The guys from Mythic Games reveal some beautiful new artwork showcasing the look of the various locations you'll adventure through in their upcoming miniatures board game Solomon Kane.
Solomon's adventures take him all over the world from his native homeland of England, to France, Germany, and Africa. The guys also show off some of the colourful characters Solomon encounters along his travels including his nemesis Le Loup.
Which location are you looking forward to exploring?

One of Mythic’s ambassadors did a demo for us the other day. It’s a great game!
I’m disapointed I missed it; really wanted to check out the minis in the flesh.
They’re nice! I think the ones we played with were pre-production models so the final ones will be a bit sturdier!
I´d like to explore Germany. Dark, grim and menacing. The Black Forest, The Bavarian Forest to the south-east of Germany, valkyries and water ghosts.
The artwork is really great and I think it would be worthwhile to bring out some of the pieces as posters. The one from France will be quite impressive on the living-room wall.
I bought “The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane” a few days ago. The illustrations in there are black and white ones and there are only few with landscapes etc.
As for having Solomon travel to America, it is more than okay, because Mr. Howard was American himself (I had thought he was British.). He lived in the south of the country (Georgia, South Carolina; thank God there was a CV of better a hommage to the life of of Mr Howard in my new book), and the myths and legends a rich and dark. Maybe some of you read Mr. Lovecrafts stories that take place in the south of America.
For those that have read all the books can someone tell me what the fuss is about? I read them and it seemed a bit derivative and had some awkward racism (to be expected given the era it was written, much like Lovecraft). I take it the Kane character has been fleshed out a bit in subsequent works because the one in the books is a bit two dimensional.
Kane is rather two dimensional. He’s of a character type that Howard used a lot and which featured in pulp fiction for a long time, that of the iconic hero. It’s similar to the character types that would appear in mythology a lot. The result is often a not very complex character, but one whose image sticks in the mind and who subsequently is utilized often as a form of visual or narrative shorthand. Conan was another such example, as was Tarzan, The Shadow, Superman etc.
It actually works quite well for a game like this, where the nature of the hero is defined (he’s Solomon Kane, he’s a puritan who fights evil things) but his character is left nebulous enough that the players can take him down different paths without it clashing too much with their image of him.
@dracs : now you’ve professed a love of pirates I kinda want to see you present a Weekender dressed as a ninja pirate. ?
Solomon Kane in southern France: anyone else now imagining him retiring there as an expat and opening a British pub and being a stereotypical expat? ?
French Santa: surely that’s more Kramer’s than Santa there. ?
On vampires vs zombies: probably worth remembering early vampires were closer to what we think of as zombies being corpses that rose from their graves rather than the cultured dark masters of the night that we think of.
On the gorilla: “Kneel before Grodd.”
?
Tribal leader: is it just me or is his render missing nipples? ?
Ogre looks nice: is it just me or does the face kinda look like Lou Ferrigno?
Werewolves: I want to amend my ninja pirate comment above – now I want to see Sam presenting as a ninja pirate werewolf. ?
Of course the places that play in my native Germany
I’m going all in on this one, don’t care which kidney I have to sell to make it happen. I’m so so exited for this. The art. The stories. The gameplay. The minies. I’m in love! <3
me too
And me. I’m all in already which is expected to be around $300. The opening buy in is $120. Either way round you know we are going to get a huge stack of stuff. Not just minis though as you can see from their investment in this art. Game components look brilliant too.
Possibly most excited about not just the high quality minis but also an amazing game experience. So different from the norm, but the more I learn about it the more I like it. Gameplay at so many levels that look like they have a huge level of near unique replayability. Looks to be one of the best immersive gaming experiences from a boardgame. The rule book is available for download on the Kickstarter page if anyone is interested. Bravo Mythic!
And me, the moment they announced the all in would be around $300 I raised my pledge. Fantastic looking game and not the usual dungeon crawl that we see so often!
This does look like a lovely game that is doing a great job of showcasing this fascinating mythical vision of historical adventure.
