The Weekender: Funky Modular Virtual Tabletop Fun!
September 11, 2013 by dignity
Boom! The Weekender is back with a bang and we have some awesome talk with you guys about. The guys will be chatting about the ace looking terrain coming out of Plast Craft for Infinity, the progress on Virtual tabletops and the return of some Backstage favourites in the Deepspace Assault Console and GameScape series.
As well as that we get a chat about one of the games of the moment, Formula D which you might have seen on Tabletop this season. We can't forget the ace charity event, Battle for Sofia that is going to be happening later on this year. It's a marathon game of Warhammer Fantasy and deserves your support.

Happy Gaming!

Ah the weekender, my Saturday is complete. Don’t stop making these or I’m coming down there and giving you such a pinch.
As somebody who is about to move from Bristol (easy access to hobby stores and gaming groups, not to mention the players of my weekly Star Wars RPG campaign) and back to the place of my birth – deepest, darkest Cornwall – this seems to have come along at just the right time and I checked out Virtual Tabletop when Chris mentioned it in a recent Achtung! Cthulhu kickstater update. It definitely has some promise and it’s great that I will be able to take pictures of the ~25 WotC Star Wars maps I own and use them in the software.
It remains to be seen how well this will work alongside Skype or some dedicated GM tool to share the sort of information that Virtual Tabletop won’t handle but at least it gives me some hope for my future as a GM.
Now if formula d was to bring out a mad max edition…..
that would be awesome !!!!!
Good show guys.
With as long as Formula Dé has been out, it surprises me to see people who are unfamiliar with it. Adding the weather and wear rules makes this game, I think.
All the ‘app’ type things do seem like fun, but, and maybe this is just me, after spending all day on a computer to earn the money to do things I enjoy, one of the pleasures of painting models and playing games is that I do not have a screen in front of me at all.
PS. I was distracted for the first half of the show as to why warren was drinking what appeared to be iced urine..
gr8t show as normal guys, but thought you might of mentioned the death of Donald Featherstone.
Thanks for the very cool shout out.
We’ll be revealing more details in the coming weeks. But for now was can say it will require shifts to keep the action going. It’s one continuous game, narrative driven, with an ‘end’ to the game being driven by the time not the turns… Although its a ‘bring all you models’ game the units come on in waves and keep coming…
Have any of the winners be announced for the comps for the last few weeks? The one im waiting for is the two player drop zone starter set!
Welcome back! Perfect end to the week!
A good show, even though I’m almost exclusively a historical gamer. I did love the way Lloyd and Justin interacted. Justin’s facial expressions made me chuckle after Lloyd disagreed with him – which he did quite a lot.
A welcome return of “Pseudo-Science with Warren Johnson”. I hear that in the future we’ll be no longer be having babies in the natural way, instead nanobots will create them from monkey and pig DNA 😉
Great show and I felt Lloyd brought a lot to the literal and metaphorical table. I still think the show works best with three people but Lloyd should definitely be on the shortlist for one of those three slots each week.
Another a great episode guys.
Congrats to the winners.
Great to hear your arguments about the future. Those are the kind of topics I love getting into with my mates. It was good to hear someone say the communism was a great idea in principle but was brought down by human nature (greed etc), I’ve been saying that for years.
Great tip on the copydex too.
Loved this video guys and nice to see you guys making terrain. 🙂 Formula D is indeed a great game, although I only played the 1st edition about 10 years ago in Truro British Legion which we used to game at. The 2nd edition looks very shiny indeed and this may get my gf into more gaming as she loves F1. 😀
Mick
Interesting conversation about the future of gaming. I’m not betting on the RIF chip idea though. Would make an expensive hobby even more expensive. 🙂
I do feel that as 3D printing becomes better and cheaper, we’ll begin to see it replacing the traditional molding process. Tooling the molds is where the real cost of making models comes from so I can see some companies looking for an alternative to that. You could easily just plug in a CAD render and print out mass quantities of models…once the technology allows that to happen. Whether or not the savings of that process gets passed down to the consumer is an entirely different topic though…
Well this is probably one of the most rewarding weekenders I have ever watched…
In reference to the debate between Stu and Warren, my take is both of you guys are correct in view points given however both have looked over the one aspect that makes both view points both valid and true to course.
This is when sharing the advances of technology in light of the human condition being a strong hold that one must contend with to further any and all advances of both listed.
Every leap of faith or stride made by both man and the power of the imagination has always been met with a total revolt of either one or the other.
When the last and most precious resource of all becomes no longer needed, this is when you will see the opinions of both Warren and Stu. Find their way full circle.
That resource is mankind and I believe the author of brave new world nailed it when naming it “The Ultimate Revolution”… or the ultimate singularity is another term used by Noam Chomsky…
Heres the classic speech I was able to find online done at Berkley

Good show guys 🙂
As far as singularity look no further than technology birthed from imagination
I look at Steve Jackson games and that card game he created in 1995…

Its pretty scary to see how our gaming teeters between fiction and reality. To the point it seems at times to shape it some how.
Good episode fellas. And +1 for Radio 4!
Nice one fellas.
Great chat about the replicator and not a drop of alcohol in sight. Which is probably just as well for you may have run out of time to film xlbs
Truly one of the best Weekenders to I have seen. Great show boys, really great.
I want to become Backstager but I dont have a Credit Card tied in my PayPal account. Any way around that ?
I’m not sure that “funky” describes some boxes— but good show, good show!
Got to love those warren brain farts. 🙂
I think the weekender is one of the best bits of BoW.
Keep it up guys 😀
I didn’t quite enjoyed this, not sure why, maybe I was tired, maybe it was what it was discussed in the first part.
On the slightly off topic segment, in my opinion we live in a universe of limited resources and nothing human will do will change that, if nature needs to blow up a massive sun to make gold humanity will most probably need to do the same, nature does use the easiest way to do anything after all, if it could do it easier it would, governments are not there just for wealth distribution, they exist for two reasons first because people want somebody else to take the responsibility for actions that have deep impacts and secondly because there are people that feel the urge they need to control other people lives, either beneficially or otherwise. I do hope though that in the future humanity will spread around a bit, so far we are crowded in too few places in our own planet leaving a vast part of it untapped, cheaper and faster transportation would help tremendously there.
Now on the real wargaming thing, I feel we need to define what wargaming is, what is the hobby and for what we are in, exilis failed in my opinion because there was no reason whatsoever for the wargaming aspect of it, the app itself was playing the game and you did not need the miniatures for anything, so why buy them? for the codes? why play the game then? its the same reason why most wargame companies have not gone bankrupt because of vassal and all other online wargame “simulators” even though they are free, do not need painted models and one can play from any distance to any other opponent, its not what our hobby is about, RF chips on our models? sounds quite gimmicky without any real application beyond helping a certain company stop conversions and force you buy specific models (I don’t care how well your GS work was, the chip says this is a tactical and not a sternguard).
What technology I see possible to have a impact on our tables is indeed 3D scanning and printing, when it reaches great levels, it would potentially allow companies to either have digitally sculpted or traditionally sculpted but 3D printed models to sell either to individuals with 3D printers or to LGS that can print on demand, that would even free up self space for more table space and allow LGS to have an expanded range of games they can support.
Otherwise the technology in our hobby will have to have a support role, while the rpg app would find an audience because RPG are not wargames and for the most part people play them without miniatures, in many cases not even withmaps and tokens, the wargaming is not about a virtual tabletop once you reach that point its something else.
Don’t get me wrong there are some good ideas, at first NFC sounds like a plausible idea for digitally managing your game roster, but has to take into account conversions and other odd situations, colour 3D printed models could be a good solution to prepainted models, giving the option to get a grey or primed model or an “officially” coloured one (maybe a few variants thrown in?) if you do not want to bother wit the painting aspect of it, 3D printed models would most probably come in already assembled format, but could also come in parts form for those wanting conversions, manipulation of the model from the user before printing would not be out of question, in a controlled environment.
Technology can be a benefit for everything in my opinion but only if it is applied to the parts that need improvement, when applied to other parts, it changes what the essence of the thing is so much that ceases to be what it was and that may drive people away.
I’m a big fan of Formula D and it’s on my personal top 10 boardgame list. You can easlily call it a clasic, ’cause the first version came out in France in 1991. We also played Formula D Championships on the matching courses, each player got a team of two cars and points where tracked. Really a lot of fun!
Bring on consoles for IPad!
Bring on the console for the iPad!
I still, just about prefer the old ‘Turn 8’. Mind you, it was filmed in the evening, and after a few beers (or so it seemed). I still can’t rid my mind of that episode involving the nappy and the theme from ‘Steptoe and Son’. Can’t remember much else. Who do I sue for the permanent mental scarring?
…That´s so last year news chummer!!!!.. 😀
…Awesome board game!!!!….”FORMULA D” Just got me riled up to play street chases or just tipical F1 races….and i hate F1 races!!!!!!!…just loved it!!!!….got to get me one!!!
It is great to see Lloyd back in front of the camera.
One of the best weekenders I’ve seen, thanks guys for the delving into the human condition… Was a little confused how we got there but it was interesting for sure!
Warren, Anytime you want to play Formula D let me know. Love that game.
Since Exillis was mentioned I just want to throw out a couple more of its merits and why I enjoyed the potential that it had.
It is a very good introductory wargame. It does not take much to learn and does give some basic strategy and if One really wanted to dive deep into the game mechanics its a nearly bottomless pit of complexity. Its a game that can grow with the players if the players choose, or it can be just a bit of fun smash and grab. My wife enjoys board games but not so much any of the tabletop wargames but I got Exillis and she enjoys playing that and because of it since we just got our Kings of War kickstarter goodies she is willing to try out KoW now. It did also have some fantastic minis, the Emmisarius is huge, imposing and gorgeous once painted up. (it did have some pretty dumb ones too but so it is with everything). That said I do agree that it wasn’t implemented as well as it could but the concept has to start somewhere.
What I see in the short term before Warren’s Replicators of Gold and world peace (I love your optimism Warren, completely 100% what Star Trek is based out of thought wise) is smart tables with interactive miniatures. Taking something like Skylanders, mixing it with Exillis and your normal tabletop game, a 4×8 configurable touchscreen tabletop with your game software for Wargame XYZ. You would have a specific section (tray, depression, etc) to roll dice in where the table recognizes what was rolled (or you can have a program roll for you, either way) and as you move your minis on the board (and place terrain, etc) they interact with the software to create effects and such. Unit A fires on unit B with a flamethrower and flames lick out on the board encompassing unit B’s section of the board It could even go so far as animating explosions and bullet trails, the creation of craters from crashing aircraft or heavy bombardment, or a massive arrow volley and magical effects, all sorts of environmental touches. Also being touchscreen the game can get more in depth with order options for units that could give modifiers and whatnot. The table can also eliminate some of those annoying debates that occasionally crop up about an extra 1 inch of movement here or there or can this unit actually see that unit, how many guys does this template touch, what the angle for a scatter is etc etc etc.
I think its doable right now but is probably significantly cost prohibitive, but so were VHS players and DVD players and HD TVs. and instead of tags in each component, I see , a programmable chip that you attach to your mini’s base and set on table initiating the software that you can input what the model is or even take a picture of the model and it loads it into the table software. (same for terrain so it can determine LoS for the game) USB flash drive (or whatever the next big storage medium is… cloud wifi connection?) would be necessary to import your army for use at game stores/clubs. with the limit of my imagination the fully interactive touchscreen tabletop computer seems the next step of evolution of the tabletop game itself because it still contains the hobby aspect. Eventually it may go to full virtual with all your customization done via a computer/photoshopish software… but in the next 20 years or so? I would wager on something along the lines of the table, and I look forward to the possibility. It will do a lot to bridge the gap between learning a game/introducing and capturing the attention of people and keeping them in the hobby.
sorry still mostly asleep this morning, I could have typed that jumble of ideas out much better… its enough to get the idea though.
Seems what Warren is talking about with the replicator tech, is the concept in ‘Diamond Age’ by Neil Stephenson. It’s a great book as it does give insight into where the nano tech revolution will lead to and how we will change or economy.
Awesome Weekender!
Sounds just like hanging out with my gamer group. Good work guys!
A great debate guys, not sure how you get the materials for the “replicator thing” if you have no money. I’m a firm believer in the path of 3d printing at home, then replicator technology but at those points you will purchase raw materials and blueprints rather than finished products. It will help reduce packaging too so Eco friendly.
I really liked the terrain video you did. Maybe you could get bishmiester in to make some scenery
If you guys think that app is cool, check out https://app.roll20.net Roll20. It lets you build a campaign from the ground up, maps and all, and then play it online, with everyone seeing the maps, the ability for the DM to impose a fog of war, and other awesomeness.
Forget Robocop, get behind the Dredd Sequel, this has to happen or I’ll keep boring people banging on about it.

Thanks guys! I’ve been looking for a game to entice my F1 mad dad into playing something and Formula D should be just the ticket. Great show as always and I think as indispensable to my weekend’s activities as Football Focus and MOTD – and time team when it was on 🙁
