Happy Sunday mate lol
Yay, drunk Neil achieved something as well as an horrendous hangover
Happy Sunday Backstagers! ?
Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday!
Open mini rulesets that brings new life to old models is the way to go. Picked up saga:Age of Magic (AoM) at Salute but haven’t had much time to process it yet. Warlords of Erewhon (WoE) was being played a lot at club last week. There’s always KoW and Vanguard. With armies from LOTR and WHF in the cupboard some fun is going to be had investigating lists. Might even have a reason to finish that Empire army I abandoned when I fell out of love with GW systems.
Gerry’s idea of running very similar lists through playthroughs of different rulesets would be a very useful asset for the community. Film a series with a round table discussion to finish? 4 armies and four rulesets… 4×4?
It would be equally interesting to see what kind of tactics the various systems reward.
Building identical lists may be a challenge though.
nah it was fairly easy
that’s an interesting one certainly, could have a chat with @warzan and see if we could do something for it or maybe turn it into an article series. Starting with fantasy and maybe covering other genres in time. One for the mulling pot certainly
Have found a dodgy chap doing a dodgy youtube video comparing AoM & WoE, but I’m sure OTT could do a better job 😉
I always avoid youtube that way lies madness and death 😉
Happy Sunday!!!
Great show guys. Its 1.30am so I am off to bed.
Happy Sunday guys.
@warzan go all Sylvaneth Tree-Folk, printablescenery.com provides you with cool elvish tree design .stl files for scenery. I´ve got both and I love this stuff. It is easy to paint (See my old project https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/jockes-first-step-into-age-of-sigmar-sylvaneth/ ), fun to collect and lovely to print (I use my Ender 2 with 0.2 layer hight and the stuff is beautyfull).
Also, back to a new Mindmelder: Google “Eye of the Sahara Atlantis”, thank me later 😉
Happy Sunday one and all! 🙂
Happy Sunday Jim looking forward to seeing how you get on in the Falklands! 🙂
Thanks very much! Less than an hour to go!
*queue Europe with “The Final Countdown.” 😀 😀 😀

For swarms you get a lot of little Sprites with anything Wood Elf Related that would work great on a swarm base.
Remember guys the GW colour sprays ARE NOT Primers.
Not sure where I stand on the 3D Printer issues you both made good points, it’s defiantly inevitable.
Now’s the time to get into 3D Design even if it’s just for fun, it’s not that hard to learn to do basic stuff like buildings and accessories.
Haha very clever of them to call that mini Ace. For those who don’t know the guy in Predator with a minigun is played by Former Pro Wrestler/Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura so you get “Ace” Ventura, very clever. The minis looks amazing.
Wow those Dwarves have some crazy detail for such small minis.
Custom Dice really bug me. At Least in Saga Dice just correspond to D6 Values so they aren’t essential but Bolt Action is especially annoying since to guarantee you’ll have dice to play with you need at least 4 types. (Colour A Round, Colour A Square, Colour B Round, Colour B Square) That way no matter what your opponent brings you will have dice to use. That gets extremely annoying especially if you have more than 12 units per side and have to now buy 8 packs rather than 4.
Happy Birthday @dignity
Happy Sunday!
I always use my GW sprays as primers and so far didn’t need to re-paint one figure. Works a treat ?
Happy B-day @dignity ?
for a long time we just used standard d6 for BA as well, and for WoE.
I havnt even watched the show and I would say always go 10mm. Base them on washers and away you go. One day I will do a new post for my project where that’s what I’m doing but year end keeps getting in the way!
I’m a big fan of Mantic’s Forces of Nature army, especially their Forest Shamblers. Most of the models are metal though, but the one advantage is you can throw them at the aliens if they come to snip your genitals…
Im so much looking forward to play Saga AoM.
@warzan The talk about generating instant 3D Models based on abstract concepts reminded me of something I saw on Facebook during Austism Awareness Week/Day.
Yes it’s Dr. Jordan Peterson, nothing in the video has anything to do with politics it’s just the best and most concise explanation that happens to be delivered by Dr. Peterson who is a fully qualified Clinical Psychologist. I have no desire to start any political fights and I won’t respond to anyone who does, he’s a man talking about a topic that’s all.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxNg0xcadsM
He is talking about a very Autistic Woman (Temple Grandin) who basically entirely redesigned the way slaughterhouses are planned out in the US because she thinks that there is a link between her specific Autistic way of thinking and the general way animals think. Maybe there could be a type of Autism that is closely linked with the way AI (What we today call AI not real full blown AI) that could design things thinks. Maybe the solution to one could help the other?
Lacking the ability to abstract is essentially one of the big downsides to AI since you can plug data into it and get it to do a form of abstraction but right now we can’t match true human abstraction, essentially we can just get it to imitate when what we really need it to do is create.
“If your Autistic child gets accustomed to your kitchen say and you move a chair, especially if they’re severely autistic, they’ll have an absolute fit about it because you think Kitchen with chair moved they think completely different place”
I may just be talking nonsense but it looks to me that the closer we get to either improving AI/helping people with Autism the closer we might get to the other. I wouldn’t be surprised if the big “Breakthrough” we’re looking for comes from one of these two areas.
Fascinating insight! I’ll give it a watch, I have a lot of respect for Peterson as regardless of his conclusions he has some very interesting insights!
For a treeman army could you not buy some googly eyes and just get some twigs from the garden and put them together. Easiest prepaints you’ll ever get
Or even better just buy lots of pepperami’s they come in different sizes as well
googly eyes make everything better
Happy Sunday everyone 🙂 .
I was horrified when @warzan kicked off XLBS with the whole mutilation / @dignity mind melter thing.I wondered where today’s show was going to end up….My mind began to melt until you guys got back to hobby and i was able to relax into XLBS.
Someone out there must do bug / rat swarms for @warzan ?
lots of places, my favourite for rats are actually meant to be bases https://www.base-x-of-war.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=33_84
I used them for my skaven and just added some plastic rats from the sprues to give more rats and definition to it.
Mantic and Reaper both do bug swarms.
Join the discussion…Those bases are great.I’ll be passing these along to my friends.
this is why they keep me around, I have a shallow knowledge over a wide area. I’m like the water in a swamp
I do like Wizards exploding. Reminds me of my undead army for Fantasy Warriors and watching my Amazing Necromancer exploding display team obliterate itself every game
like the firework display at the end of Kingsman, everyones head assplode!
The first 15-20 minutes were just so moooving….
I cown’t believe I herd that!
Do you ever feel we talk too much bull?
I feel we need to steer this conversation in another direction
It is getting udder-ly ridiculous!
@warzan planning on painting again… activate John!
yup, 2p basing FTW. I’ve done all my Bolt Action stuff on 2ps and it works a treat. Other than cost an additional benefit is the heavier base (than plastic) lowers the centre of gravity and makes them more stable on the table. Strong and Stable, that’s the way to go!
@warzan are you talking about this video?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1bjZWLwqRU
that’s exactly it mate!
Happy birthday @dignity.
Happy Sunday all, and of course a happy birthday Justin!
great show as always, Looking forward to seeing Warren’s project I would be one to hope its of the AoS style so I can join in :p
So for SAGA fantasy in 10mm and you put 3 figures on a 2p one Warrior pack (25 figures,) for £5.25 would give you 8 bases. From what I’ve heard that would be 1pt wouldn’t it? @avernos @lloyd
correct. Or I’ve seen people drop to 15mm bases for infantry and 25mm for cav and staying at 1 figure per base. you could do a reduced scale army very cheaply. I just like the spectacle of bigger forces 🙂
But it’s all about looking spectacular really though isn’t it
Happy sunday all
Happy Sunday! As one of the Danes, I’m looking forward to see what you think of our food and snaps ;D hope you could use the candy and all the other stuff in the box 😉
Looking forward to see more about the saga age of magic, I will definitively look into that. Maybe you guys will do a lets play to demonstrate it 😉 ?
Salute did empty my wallet aswell…
Happy Sunday
I’m not able to attend. My mate’s very inconsiderately turning 40 that week and I have to go to a raging knees-up. It’s a second prize, but a good one.
Happy Sunday!
Now, that was quite a show. I downloaded it and went for a loooong walk with my headphones on and I was wondering why are people looking at me with confusion only to realize I was smiling like an idiot to myself through most of the cow anal rings stuff and Justin’s reactions lol. 😀
btw. Happy B-Day Justin 🙂
Interesting show guys. @dignity Happy Birthday.
One of y’alls better weekenders!
Really enjoyed it, so much so I just bought the Age of Magic book.
Just a tip for washes.
If you want to avoid the tide marks and blotchy finish, gloss varnish the model before the wash. It flows better and avoids the unevenness.
@nogginthenog – that’s a good tip.
I see scale modellers working on jets etc doing this all the time, so the wash is just in the panel lines.
I tend to do every thing with a brush including varnish so im unsure how smooth my surfaces would be.
Must try it 🙂
The beauty of gloss varnish is that they are self leveling. That is how they get the smooth shiny finish.
That means it works well even with a brush.
The scale modelling trick is to use Klear floor polish as your gloss because its cheap compared to paint, and its the same acrylic gloss, just with perfume in it, but any gloss will work.
@dignity dont listen to them, base them individually and have proper small saga! or WoE maybe even Thud and Blunder (although I have not read the rules for that…)
You mean John’s Army, right? Force(s) of Nature from Kings of War. Kinda appropriate for Warzan, imo.
When it come to 3d printing I agree with @lloyd that we are not talking 2 years
Interesting, at the 1:30:32 the wizard in the book that Gerry is holding looks like the same exact Wizard in the Frostgrave Rule Book. I am wondering if it is the same NorthStar Miniature.
yes that’s the one courtesy of Northstar
Happy Sunday, and happy birthday to Justin, my 40th was Friday the 12th so always good to find another April birthday. I also want to blame Lloyd and Gerry for getting me into Saga… I love history but have resisted getting into historical gaming… but over the past weeks having them talk about the game so much… and then with this whole age of Magic (meaning I could also add in all the old Fantasy armies I still have…) I broke down and preordered age of magic, the main rule book, and the Viking campaign book. Cheers.
one of us one of us
@warzan I have one of the cheap ebay lasers (k40) I can answer any questions you have on them. it’s been a while and to be honest the more I combine 3d printing and laser cutting the better it’s getting.
Is it worth getting one?
1) Can they cut hdf and acrylic
2) Are they relatively safe
3) What software would you recommend?
4) I LOVE YOU 😉
1) They can cut HDF, MDF, plywood, acrylic, felt… anything about 4mm thick, more than that effects the finish.
2) Mine was not what I would consider safe out of the box. It was made electrically safe with one hours work. You also would want to change the layout of the cutting bed out of the box and in total put another £50 on top to mod it right away. You also don’t run this unattended just in case.
3) They are all locked to horrible software which is coral draw a very old version with a laser plugin. There is great software available but you need to replace the main board to use it. You can also use the open source software but I personally preferred the buggy one. The software is workable but has so many quirks working on Windows 10 that are too many to relay on this message.
Hope this helps. All in all worth it. As an individual if I were doing it again I would use someone else’s laser e.g. fab lab. There is no laser that’s just a bit more money for a great deal better. It is very handy to have this sitting behind me when I am thinking and designing.
Oooh. That SAGA system looks real interesting! Love to see a let’s play or something akin to that on here guys. For SAGA addicts there’s not been a lot of video content on the system.
Happy Sunday and Happy birthday Justin!
Great show as usual guys, though i thought i’d accidentally tuned into an episode of coast to coast AM at the beginning!! I used to be into all the tin foil hat stuff in my youth so i know where your coming from Warren!
I thought i would lay down a bit of a challenge to @warzan as he made the claim that he is very well informed/educated on the Third Reich and also as we are approaching the D-Day boot camp (Which i am unable to attend much to my dismay 🙁 ).
The challenge is to watch this documentary https://thegreateststorynevertold.tv/ which is 5 hrs 50 mins long in one go or can be watched in episodes of 15 mins at a time. I would recommend anybody to watch it for a more holistic understanding of that period of history.
It is made by Documentary maker Dennis Wise and it is not a BBC or History/Discovery Channel documentary. I give the forewarning that if you do not like the idea that your entire world view could be challenged and changed then i would not bother watching.
I’m loving the 3D printing discussions as this is a real area of interest to me and i have to agree that i think that 15 years is a bit of a stretch given not only the interest but also speed of technological advancement in this field which is not just steady, it is exponential.
Uberstandtfurheruniversemeister Gerry, i must confess you may just have pushed me to the point of giving this Saga thing you’ve been going on about a bit more of a serious look! 🙂
Great episode guys, glad to see you back and looking forward to the next weekender already! 🙂
I’m keen to see that comparison let’s plays of same armies for different systems. Having never played WoE (or any of its sister rulesets) or Saga (historic or otherwise), it would be nice to See how they play out.
I’ve been considering revisiting my appallingly painted dwarf army from mid nineties (all lovely lead, before white metal). This sounds fun.
Lead dwarfs are best dwarfs
Oh @warzan Of course I’m still with you lot. I’ve been with you through far more intense than this. I’ll always be here right down to slamming of the Gates behind me. 🙂 😛 🙂
The Painting War books are fantastic, I have them all. The only small issue is the translation from Spanish to English can be interesting. Wild West next!
Hi Justin
you mentioned in this weekend about getting an airbrush cheap on Wish, could this be a cheap way to try one out instead of spending a lot? Not know anything about airbrushing could you suggest one and what about something to power it?
thanks
If you don’t already have a compressor you’re better off looking at a budget set closer to home. Bartsharp in the UK and I think Michaels or hobby lobby in the US.
thanks Gerry, will look into
Hey @warzan I just watched the show and I might be able to help you out with your painting. I have recently painted a load of dungeon scenery, wooden book cases, shelves, tables, that sort of thing. Anyway I have a method you can use for getting wood easily.
The colour sequence I use is Dryad Bark followed by an Aggrax Earth Wash then a heavy Drybrush with Gorthor Brown followed by a light drybrush of Baneblade Brown. You can add a final drybrush of any bone colour but it’s not really necessary. And then, to finish, thin some Athonian Camo Shade with Lahmian Medium, 50/50, and wash the whole thing. The final effect is a lovely grey brown colour with a greenish tinge. I’m using Citadel Paints but you can use the Paint Rack app to colour match. However I haven’t as yet found a decent match for Dryad Bark in another colour range and you can also get Dryad Bark as an airbrush paint so that should speed up painting a little.
Anyway, hope this is helpful. You can see an example of it here.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY @dignity!
It’s like Fantasy games have had a kind of Historical games revolution lately with these new rule sets coming out, which encourage you to re purpose all your old moth balled armies.
I’ve bought into Warlords of Erehwon and now Age of Magic.
Oathmark which is also on the horizon for later in the year looks like it will be just as accommodating. Throw in Frostgrave which I play a lot of, my Fantasy figures will get plenty of use.
I’ve not played Age of Magic yet but reading the book and seeing I have free rein to pretty much field/build whatever monster or army I want on the table and have a balanced game against a friend who can do likewise. It’s going to be a fun year Fantasy wise.
@warzan I recommend giving AoS a try as well as Saga etc. As a returner to GW in the form of AoS I was amazed how good the game actually is. The background has really improved since the first iteration of the game as well. I also play Saga and totally love the game, Slyvaneth would be a great army to use in both systems 🙂
Re: 3D print – I think @lloyd is right. It’ll be some more time.
@brennon I love moonstone and will happily demo you a game anytime. It’s played by a small number of us, and more at specific events setup by us gamers, rather than seeing it in general clubs at the moment. But everyone who gets a demo normally invests in a troupe, so the game is still Indie but is growing.
We have a small group in Leeds which I am looking at getting more regular club nights of moonstone going, then there is Cardiff/Bristol base.
Dan on Ye Olde Battle reps youtube channel is the main vlog source for the game and he’s down on the south coast.
But happy to arrange a meet up either in leeds or I can travel to brum – of if you get an hour at the Expo ha I can chat to you about the game and bring a small setup with me to do a very paired down demo.
Work kept me busy, but I finally managed to watch. And this show… this is just my favorite kind of XLBS. You guys chatting, showing off, following along as your train of thoughts shifts and starts following new routes. Amazing show. Thank you.
berlin is an amazing city. berlin story – bunker was a fascinating place to visit. Topograhpy of Terror as well. Intereting but scary and depressing
@warzan
Too bad you won’t go for weird world war (Konflikt 47) in 28mm, because…you know…Hover-StuG
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dreamforge-games/dreamforge-games-eisenkern-grav-stug
It’s a beautiful model that. Mark has soo much talent it’s incredible 🙂
Awwwww thanks man!
Happy tuesday everyone.
That SAGA expansion is sounding really good. Will have to grab it and have a read through. It was a great show with loads of inspirational chit chat, keep it up guys <3
Got to say I love those pendraken dwarves! Don’t need them but will definitely get them!!
Saga age of magic looks great too!!
Happy BDay Justino!
@warzan I realised I missed an opportunity to pick up some weird food in China for you and Justin to try lol…damm. .
@warzan, @dignity, I was just casually browsing Thingiverse and stumbled upon this one: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3492682, couldn’t help myself and post it remembering your discussion (or interrupted monologue?).
