For the Soviets the most obvious Vehicle Warriors are Nevsky and Loza (used in the same list). My 1750 list has both of them with 21 Shermans. These are the rules they bring you:
An Inomarochnikiy Tankovy Batalon is always the attacker in missions using the Prepared Positions special rule.
After all deployment, but before the game begins, Kapitan V I Nevsky may move himself and one Combat Company within 6″/15cm of him, that is not already part of an Infiltration, up to their normal distance in any direction within their deployment area. This movement may not be At the Double and may not take any team outside the deployment area.
Kapitan V I Nevsky is a Warrior and a Company Command Tank team rated as Fearless Veteran.
Nevsky may join any Inomarochnikiy Tankovy Batalon and replaces the Company Command M4 (M4A2 Sherman) or M4 76mm (M4A2 Sherman) tank in the Battalion HQ for and additional +50 points.
Kapitan V I Nevsky’s tank and any platoon (Soviet company) he has Joined always pass Motivation Tests on a roll of 2+.
The Hen and Chicks special rule does not apply to Nevsky. If he joins a platoon (Soviet company), the rest of the platoon still obey the Hen and Chicks special rule, ignoring any movement by Nevsky.
Gvardeyskiy Kapitan Dmitriy Loza is a Warrior and a Platoon Command Tank team rated as Fearless Veteran.
Loza may join any Perdovoye Otryad or Inomarochnikiy Tankovy Batalon and replaces the Command M4 or M4 76mm tank in an Inomarochnikiy Tankovy Company for an additional +80 points.
Second in Command
Gvardeyskiy Kapitan Dmitriy Loza may take Company Morale Checks as if he were the Company Command team if the Company Command team is Destroyed.
Spetsnaz Loza
Loza is an Infiltration Platoon. Loza may Infiltrate his Inomarochnikiy Tankovy Company.
Battle Tested
The Hen and Chicks special rule does not apply to Loza. The rest of his Inomarochnikiy Tankovy Company still obey the Hen and Chicks special rule, but the player may choose to ignore movement by Loza. If they do not, then the Hen and Chicks special rule applies as normal.
Emcha Gunner
The M3 75mm or M1 76mm gun of Loza’s M4 or M4 76mm tank has ROF 3 when stationary and ROF 2 when moving.
PS, I did manage to get Carius in a game with my artillery. It was a very luck shot that dropped straight through his command hatch on turn 2. I was very smug.
Are these dudes in Red Bear?? And yup i would have been well happy if Carius was taken out by my artillery turn 2… Boom, boom, shake the room 😀
Yes, Red Bear. Nevsky is on page 64 and Loza is on page 123.
if people want to use special characters that is up to them
they will have to find another opponent though .
at 15 millimetres special character models look terrible and when people talk about the flavour of a army what they really mean is incredibly good special rules special character rules tend to break the game and there’s nothing stopping you giving tank ace B whatever name you would like anyway and the whole point of a war game is you take the place of the general so in the case of pattern instead of having special rules just play the game as pattern wood without breaking the rule set to do so. ok that’s the end of my rant happy gaming
Me and my gaming group have decided that we will only use warriors in games with prior agreement. However they are part of the game of flames so if I played in an open environment I would accept it as part of the game.
Ps I do agree that some of the special characters in flames do unbalance the game….just re read my earlier and i overall i agree i was just being pragmatic in that just because i wouldn’t use a character in a normal game without letting the other player know other people might and i accept that they can and will if they want to..
I second ‘Tigers in the mud’, excellent read.
Wonder if Herr Carius has been made aware he’s got wargaming figures named after him..
Wittmann too was certainly a legend (although most vehicles he destroyed at Villers Bocage have indeed been soft skins afaik..). His grave was the *only* one decorated with fresh flowers and British Legion crosses / poppies when I was visiting this otherwise rather drab German war cemetery in Normandy. I’m still not entirely sure what to make of it but for now I like to think this was done by grateful wargamers/ tournament winners and not by misguided SS hero worshippers.. 😉
Out of interest, the silhouettes on the intro look a bit like Warren and Dave in Uniform!
@warzan just got around to watching this, hate to burst your bubble about Hans-Ulrich, but the battleship that he sank was an old soviet crate built in 1909 and only sank in shallow water after getting it’s bow blown off by 2x bombs it was then re floated and reused as a floating defense battery. Nothing really out of the ordinary given the age of the ship and fact the ship was pre-ww1 era.
I know this comment is late, but I re-read Joe Vandeleur’s special rules… I personally think Dr Dave under-sold his rule “Press on Regardless”. Don’t explain it as a “German Stormtrooper move” as everyone automatically assumes it is an Assault phase ability. Joe makes the roll in the MOVEMENT phase… A Sherman platoon moves 12″, then gets the 5+ and moves an additional 4″… They can then fire… AND THEN, they can assault… Using this guy, a Sherman platoon can potentially launch an assault from 20″ away!!!! That is insane!!! Plus for 10 pts, he gets the RAF air controller… This guy can seriously change up your oppositions tactics. Plus you need to use your Shermans differently as Dave has explained.
