Pre-Order New 15mm Scale Flames Of War Early War Starter Sets
January 20, 2026 by brennon
Battlefront Miniatures are now taking pre-orders for two new Starter Sets that will get you stuck into the 15mm World War II wargame, Flames Of War. They are perfectly poised for some Early War action featuring the Germans, British and the French.
Maginot Line - German Vs French Starter Set // Flames Of War
We'll start with the Maginot Line Starter Set, which features the French facing off against the Germans. The Battle for France heats up as forces clash in the countryside of both France and Belgium. Two very different approaches to modern warfare come head-to-head. Could you turn the tables on what happened in reality?
Maginot Line - German Vs French Starter Set // Flames Of War
This set contains two complete plastic armies for the Germans and the French. In total, you get...
- German Force
- 1x Panzer III Tank
- 3x Panzer III Tanks
- 3x Panzer II Tanks
- 2x 3.7cm Guns
- French Force
- 5x Somua S35 Tanks
- 3x Hotchkiss H39 Tanks
- 5x Infantry Teams
- 1x VB Rifle Grenade Team
This set will also come with all of the Unit Cards you need for playing these forces, as well as dice, a Quick Start Guide and your complete A5 Rulebook. It's a solid set of armoured elements for your Early War tank battles, plus a smattering of infantry for closing down those objectives.
Dunkirk - British Vs German Starter Set
If you'd prefer to play out another flashpoint from World War II, then how about the Dunkirk Starter Set, which has the British going up against the Germans in a rearguard action.
Dunkirk - German Vs British Starter Set // Flames Of War
Here, you'll see a bit of combined arms fighting on the tabletop, where you'll need to coordinate the movement of both armour and infantry on the tabletop. Will you be able to push back the Germans or will you be forced back to the beaches like the British were in reality?
Dunkirk - German Vs British Starter Set // Flames Of War
You could do some fun stuff with this set, especially as part of a mini-campaign or just featuring a large board. Have it move from rural fields through to tightly packed urban streets. Limit the number of troops that the Allies have access to (perhaps with the addition of some French troops) and let the Germans reinforce their units. This would really ramp up the tension!
This set also comes with two complete plastic armies...
- British Force
- 5x A13 Tanks
- 3x Light Mk VI Tanks
- 2x 2 Pdr Anti-Tank Teams
- 7x Infantry Teams
- 1x Boys Anti-Tank Rifle Team
- 1x 2 Inch Mortar Team
- German Force
- 4x Command Teams
- 6x Infantry Teams
- 1x 5cm Mortar Team
- 1x Anti-Tank Rifle Team
- 2x StuG Assault Guns
You will also get the same additional bits and pieces that you need for playing your early games as you did in the Maginot Line set. All of this could then be paired with the new Blitzkrieg: Invasion of France supplement by Battlefront, which covers the Invasion of France in 1940 and comes with formations and unit details for the Germans, British and French forces. You will also get loads of missions and rules for thematic games for the Early War.
Are you tempted by one or both of these Flames Of War Starter Sets?

Tonks!
The Maginot starter is the usual Battlefront garbage of “You piggies love tanks, don’t you???” But the Dunkirk one could be usable for a more refined game like Chain of Command Blitzkrieg, V for Victory with the new expansion, or Battlegroup if you wanted to use all the tonks.
I would be more interested in the Dunkirk set if I hadn’t already bought the Tobruk one a few years ago. Still not finished assembling and painting it. Didn’t really want Italian army, but all the other two player starters had americans vs german and didn’t want america army.
I’m very very tempted by this, I dont need more projects at the moment but this is certainly on my list. I think Early War is one of the more interesting parts of WWII and these will be perfect for Battlegroup or ‘O’ Group games.
A very unique part of WW2 that I think doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Probably because we didn’t do very well.
I admit my backlog of FOW/WW3/Clash of Steel is long, but this is an interesting period that we try too hard to forget (@jcdent this is GF9 not GW… we aren’t fooled by FOMO).
Can afford it, just not sure I can get it built before I die.
Cheers.
I’m not saying that these boxes are made to capitalize on FOMO. I’m saying that Battlefront loves putting out tank-heavy nonsense boxes to cater to Flames fans being piggies that just love tanks beyond all sense.
Okay, sounds like FOMO (neither of these sets is likely to be around for too long either) but you are right, it’s hard to resist those little tankies all lined up so pretty… my precious…..
When I see photos of a FoW game I’m not sure if I missed the memo (about the game being “rank and flank” with all those tanks formed up in lines next to each other) 😀
To be fair I’m not sure if it’s the rules fault or the playerbase taking the game into rather “extreme” limits when it comes to building your army lists. I wonder if anyone has tried playing the game with more realistic formations. For example tanks being limited to a troop either side (or it’s equivalent) with LOADS of infantry and ATGs (with ATGs being the standard setup for any static line)?
