@limburger don’t stress too much about having a bunch of hobby stuff queued up – when the inspiration to assemble and paint something does strike you’ll be well placed to act on it 🙂

@dawfydd yes I did jump on to the GW website and had a look at their pre-order section. Most notable edition appeared to be an upgrade kit for the Primaris. And the new boxed game of course… Still not sure where that one sits strategically – my best guess is to entice the people who just picked up Kill Team to use it as an entrepot to games of 40k proper given the genestealer cult as the opposing force.

@biggabum yeah some of the people I work with were born after I finished school… 🙁 Anyhow… Glad you are enjoying the Batman Miniatures game – and agree that playthroughs really do help with understanding the rules – or in my case, identifying the gaping holes in what I thought was ny reasonably solid grasp of the rules set I had only just finished reading..

@mage don’t burn yourself out replying to us, much more pressing matters afoot for you apparently 🙂 Thanks for the example AoS list, it’s nice to see that you are given the flexibility to field something innovative, quite a few forces blended together there. On a slightly different tack however this list is a great example of why I avoid tourneys nowadays. A dragon and two phoenixes? THREE overpowered monstres in the one list?… Plus another three casters to back that up?… I’m glad he took those 10 spearmen, otherwise the list could have been at risk of being slightly unbalanced 😛 Ahem, sorry… So if I’m being a little less facecionus for a moment, our usual games are with forces 2-3 times larger than the one listed here (I’m doing pretty quick and dirty conversion just eyeballing what is listed and converting to 8th ed points equivalents, but we play 4000-5000 point games) and we will occasionally take one monster, and even then will flag in advance that we are doing so. I’m too old and cranky to be bothered with rules lawyering and ‘mathhammer’ nowadays, and while I genuinely and sincerely do hope that everyone at the tournament had a great time that is not the sort of game I want to play. I think it has just clicked for me why there were no points listed in the initial AoS list, and why 40k is encouraging the broad ‘power level’ system to determine equivalence.

Sorry, went on a bit of a rant there, but the example was a good one for what can be achieved with regard to a combined force, which speaks well to the thematic options permitted by the system from a narrative perspective. So well played to GW there 🙂

@a27cromwell ah the patented revenge sugar high 🙂 As an uncle with a self-appointed licence to spoil all the little ones I break that technique out regularly. Still, I’m careful not to overstep…

Agree that the road bases look much more thematic – well worth the effort to transition across to them I think.

@woldenspoons good to hear you are able to move forward with a variety of projects 🙂 Great conversion too.

@sundancer really like the vibrancy of the colours used on the SWL mins – how are you finding them to work on?

@tuffyears what? You mean that you are supposed to race in this game and not just drive to kill one another? 😛  Seriously, just wondering if you have you been tempted to pick up and convert some of those small plastic matchbox petrol and fire stations and parking garages for use as scenery?

@fcchuck welcome! Yes hadn’t really had a good look at that KS until it was mentioned on the weekender. Had a look at the project and skimmed the downloadable PDF. Planning on giving it a more detailed read-through shortly, for a comparatively low cost buy-in point I am giving it strong consideration.

@oriskany not a Star Trek fan personally but I am of the understanding that there are a bunch of ships in the universe named after references to anime. One of the Enterprise’s sister ships is apparently called the Yamato, which may or may not be a reference to this:

And for the uninitiated, yes that is the original Yamato retrofitted as an interstellar spaceship, because anime 🙂

Haha! LRDG, great stuff. Always like the look of those kits, mainly due to the possibilities presented by stowage on the trucks and jeeps I guess. Keen to see what you can achieve with a 28mm canvas 🙂 How many armies am I working on at once? … Um… 5 armies presently with another dozen queued up for later on. Plus another couple of dozen ‘skirmish’ sized forces and minor projects and terrain on top of that. It’s OK, you can judge me 🙂

@elessar2590 yes point well made on the pom poms, my plan was to overbrush from yellow to orange once the dark varnish was on and set to bring them back up to a more correct colour. But having read your post and having thought about it a little more, while having the force as a unified company will work well for Sharp Practice (which is only skirmish level) it won’t look particularly realistic later on if I am scaling it up to a point where the models are more representative of larger formations (ie for Black powder or a similar system). So after some consideration I think I will perhaps mix the colours up a little and try to cover things off in groups of 8 – that way I can have a unit base for each company in Sharp Practice and still be able to mix tings back into a more correctly appearing formation for more full-scale games. Thanks for the input and the compliment 🙂 yes really liking the Warlord minis, they were so quick to assemble as well. Detractors might complain about the lack of poseability but given the need to rank them up in close formations I think this saves a lot more headaches to be honest. Great texturing and shading on the camels 🙂

Progress to day was getting a coat of varnish on the French (once the varnish has pulled back and fully set they will get a matt coat and a touch-up 🙂 ) and a start made on some Skaven, plus tidying up the undercoat on some terrain. Additionally gave up mucking about with rolling pins to texture foam core for roads and decided to try and 3d print a section as a test piece. Will probably take a good chunk of time to print enough roads to intersect my gaming surface but I figure I should only have to do it the once and then I’ll be able to use them whenever I like moving forward. So will see how it goes…

On top of that my copy of Kill team arrived today (Such a heavy box packed full of goodies!) so will be reading up on the rules tonight and probably adding a few more skirmish forces to my ‘to do’ list…
