So yeah, I wanna vaguely theme this around the 1980s with music and stuff. Not sure how it will work but screw it! Im kinda working some of the weekend… and trying to get it right!

Welcome All to another Hobby Weekender! As per tradition started generations ago, and handed down from wise elders, the intro blurb is shamelessly cut and paste below once again and possibly for all time…:

To the uninitiated, this is a virtual hobby hangout here on the forum. It is something fun and silly with a little more ‘oomph’. It’s not just show and tell with your models. Its chatting, getting to know one another, community building. Think of it as a sort of club like hobby session. Everyone is welcome, of course, and there are a few rules to abide by. Let it go as OT as you like with chatting with folks. BoW/OTT is a special, unique community, and this little weekly thread is a tradition on these forums. Though not for everyone, if you are still reading and keen, then it is for you. If not, best click out.

We do a few things on this thread that usually lasts from Friday or Saturday til about Wednesday or Thursday. My say is final in this silly little corner of the internet. Fear not, for this is your safe place against the outside world of flame wars, trolling and all that other crap.

    (1) Make a pledge for the weekend. It can be painting, assembly, priming, converting, background writing, terrain, you name it. Just gotta be relevant to hobbying or gaming.

    (2) Chat with people. Be friendly. Do get to know one another, be kind, provide positive reinforcement and constructive criticism. Do not post up your real name, credit card, bank details or home address info.

    (3) I will list out questions. Answer them. Longer answers = more points. Also, points are being assigned to something else as it confused some folk for a while.

    (4) Awards will be given out at the end of the thread and you shall be awarded XP, added to your account profile by the wonderful @lancorz . Think of him as the ever vigilant Batman of the forums who keeps a careful eye on the status quo, but also acts in a way, like Alfred; with a calm disposition and the attentive nature of a concierge.

    (5) Scottish Pub Law rules: no discussion of religion or politics**. Keep it clean. Behave. Be nice, be kind. Walk away if you get angry. Don’t be a dick.

Also there are bonuses for the following ‘Achievements’:
    · Most Valuable Player (most engaged with topic)
    · Fire Starter (topic starter, encourages the member circulation)
    · Hobby Champ (most hobby over the weekend)
    · Meme Lord (ryhmes, funnies & memes)
    · Pun-Tertainment (best pun)
    · Brush Licker (painting & terrain)
    · Headliner DJ (most eclectic music)
    · Armchair Commander (weekend battle reports)
    · Community Usher (helpful & engaged)
    · Storyteller (weekly discussion & story)

Note: All points are awarded in fictional currencies… sometimes

    And onto the questions!

    (1) How do you deal with a cold or flu?

    (2) Can you hobby when you feel run down? (Initially I accidentally wrote run over…)

    (3) Your opinion on the entertainment industry of the 1980s is…?

    (4) Name a tv show you liked when you were younger or a child

    (5) What toys or tv shows influenced you, directly or not, a little or a lot into this broad hobby?

Not had a lot of hobby time for the past few weeks for various reasons (went blind in my left eye: sight back now but a bit worrying for a couple of weeks, followed by a 24 hour sickness bug that had no sense of time).

Anyhoo After being out of sorts for a while my pledge this week is very loose due to it being the granddaughters 6th Birthday but hoping to sneak a game of Warmachine in dependant on when the little Miss turns up: Matty wants to try out his new toys.

We’ve opted for a 125pt as side (he wants to try out ALL his new toys) 2 caster slugfest Cryx vs Cygnar. Armies have been selected and board set up so its just getting the game in.

Matty has Taken Gaspy and Denny aas his casters and his Army looks something like this:

    Asphyxious 1

    Cankerworm

    Kraken

    Nightwretch

    Skarlok thrall

    Deneghra 1

    Nightwretch

    Defiler

    Slayer

    Reaper

    10x Bane Warriors

    10x Bile thralls

    10x Blackbanes Ghosts

    10x Mechanithralls

    Necrosurgeon and stitch Thralls

    Tartarus

    Rengrave

    Hellslinger Phantom

    Pistol Wraith

For Cygnar i’ve gone with Caine, and after some soul searching, chose Striker (so tempted to take Hayley but thought Strikers knock down ability with Earthquake might be essential to keep Matty’s troops at bay while I deal with the Kraken).

So my Army looks like this:

    Stryker 1

    Ironclad

    Stormclad

    Lancer

    Squire

    Caine 1

    Defender

    Hunter

    Charger

    Rienhold

    Stormsmith Stormcaller x3

6x Gunmages  + gun mage officer

    Black 13th

    10 x Long Gunners

    Stormblades

    10 x Trencher commando’s

    10 x Trencher Infantry + 3x Grenadiers + officer and Sniper

@biggabum I remember playing against Stryker in one of my first games, I imagine his abilities are just as annoying now ?

    on to the questions:

    1) I don’t. I am terrible when I get a cold, moody, snappy and a down right pain in the rear end, and, according to me, my cold is always much worse than anyone elses. Woe betide anyone that forgets to tell me when i’m due a Lemsip (I cant look at the clock myself because i’m too ill)…. and thats just a cold, i’m even worse with the flu.

    2) I don’t think so. I think if your attempting the creative side of things, you need to be 100% alert or you run the risk of losing concentration and making silly mistakes that could ruin a project you’ve spent hours on. Gaming wise, I think if youre not with it you can make the game unenjoyable for your opponent and yourself.

    3) I love the 80’s. Music had more of an edge and in my opinion had a lot more variety. People were more sociable and not always staring at their bloody phone. If you wanted something you went to a store had a look at the actual item you wanted and then bought it, unllike todays game of chance that your shiny looks as good in real life as it does on the net. Ok there are a good few things that are better today, but some things have just made us lazy.

    4) oooh theres a few I loved. Kung Fu, Alias Smith and Jones (the western), Time Tunnel, Colditz, Monty Python, I could go on forever.

    5) I suppose the little Airfix figures were the earliest thing I had that came close to wargaming. A mate had some Greeks (I think) and I had some Romans and we used to set them up on the yard and roll marbles at them.

    (1) How do you deal with a cold or flu?

I tend to try to get a whole lot of rest. Despite what people say, once you come down with one Vitamin C is useless. I’ll just chill.

    (2) Can you hobby when you feel run over?

On the weekend I’ll try to do a bit, but if I’ve had to take a day off work I won’t touch bobby stuff, because I feel a bit too guilty about having fun.

    (3) Your opinion on the entertainment industry of the 1980s is…?

The vast majority of my favourite bands got their start in the 80s or very late 70s, and ditto many of my favourite movies. I’m certainly less irritated by 80s entertainment than most modern stuff.

    (4) Name a tv show you liked when you were younger or a child

I used to absolutely love the original Ninja Turtles cartoon, and a tv series that only Aussies would know called Spellbinder. That was pretty cool – sci fi kids tv with pronto steampunk meets medieval

    (5) What toys or tv shows influenced you, directly or not, a little or a lot into this broad hobby?

If I were more skilled I would love to be able to bring a very big Terry Gilliam influence into my conversions for 40k. Think Brazil, Time Bandits or the newer The Zero Theorem (visually great, even if the plot was pretty poor)

i pledge to get this tank tank done by the end of this week:

    F32470F0-A841-4AC5-8618-895D922BCDAC

Using this as an opportunity to ask for advice, I want to make it look like it’s less camo and more that it’s a cult vehicle that’s been repaired and repainted in drive and drabs – buuuuut I don’t want it to look like I just fail at painting camo. Anyone have any ideas?

No pledges from me this week, too much planned.

    (1) How do you deal with a cold or flu?

Sleep, eat chicken soup, sleep even more. Repeat until feeling better.

    (2) Can you hobby when you feel run over?

Nope. Brain is clogged and I don’t want to ruin anything. Also: sleep a lot

    (3) Your opinion on the entertainment industry of the 1980s is…?

“Bringer of wonderful memories” my younger self would say. “Greedy money grabs” my adult self today says

    (4) Name a tv show you liked when you were younger or a child

Just one? Hmmm… I’ll go for “that one show” on sky channel. Was on Sunday morning but I can’t remember the name. Was later followed by the “The DJ Kat Show”. Those had all the ‘toons in it!

    (5) What toys or tv shows influenced you, directly or not, a little or a lot into this broad hobby?

I don’t think any of them did. I found out about tabletop wargaming waaaaay later.

Now, more work! Read you later.

    Woohoo! weekend 🙂

    @mage thanks for hosting!

@biggabum mate you are supposed to take the spoon out of the coffee before you try and drink it 🙂 Seriously, hope the eye is Ok now and you are over the flu. best of luck getting the game in and have fun spoiling the granddaughter 🙂

@woldenspoons annoying abilities? does that mean debuffs? Sorry not at all across Warmachine…

@voidifremoved nice looking project. Maybe do a camo base and then paint sections in different colour/strength/tone washes so that they sort of tint/overlay the initial colours? No idea if that will really work with the outcome you are after but could be worth consideration?

@sundancer I might be inclined to agree with you on response #3 🙂

Quick pledge – finish my last Marauder, and chaos banner for the Chaos project, print some stuff and catch up on BoW vids etc. Also try and progress my Middenheim and Elf Sea Patrol projects 🙂

Back later with tunes, question responses etc…

    Happy Weekend everyone.

    Pledge
After the house move, I have a few models that have lost an arm, or I have dropped so I have a bit of repair work to do.  Also a lot of my Kings of War Dwarfs have come off their unit base, so will get them stuck back on.  Plus more sorting out my massive pile of shame and the hobby shed.

    Questions
    (1) How do you deal with a cold or flu?

I know I am tempting fate here, but I have never had the flu (I did have atypical pneumonia once, which was horrible but anyway).  For a cold, rest, paracetamol (if I have a fever or headache) and hot drinks.

    (2) Can you hobby when you feel run over?

Building or painting… not really.  Playing (not that I often do), no chance.  But perhaps reading a rulebook or history/fluff or researching a paint scheme or ordering more models I don’t need, then yes!

    (3) Your opinion on the entertainment industry of the 1980s is…?

In terms of the music I like, massive heavy metal fan here, the 80s were perhaps the pinnacle of the movement.  Traditional bands like Maiden, Priest and Saxon were in their prime and then you had Thrash – Slayer, Metallica, Dark Angel etc. Death/Black Metal was just coming into the scene with bands like Morbid Angel and Bathory.  Plus AC/DC, GNR, Motley Crew and that sort of more Hard Rock stuff.  I would guess most of my favourite metal albums are from the 80s.

Movies,  you had Conan, Empire/Return of the Jedi, Rocky movies, Rambo, all the other Arnold and Sly action movies…basically all the movies I loved as a kid in the 80s and teenager in the 90s.

TV again it is The A-Team, Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazard, Airwolf, The Fall Guy all shows I love or loved!

So in conclusion, I love the 80s 🙂

    (4) Name a tv show you liked when you were younger or a child

See above!  I was also a big fan of Metal Mickey – though I don’t remember this as I would have been under 5 when it was on TV.  But parents, siblings, aunts and uncles tell me I was nuts about it.

    (5) What toys or tv shows influenced you, directly or not, a little or a lot into this broad hobby?

For a TV show it was Thomas the Tank engine but trains in general.  I was majorly into trains before Warhammer.  Even as a 11 or 12 year old I loved watching Thomas and trying to work out how they built the scenery and all that stuff.  (I hate the CGI stuff now…) Trains have a big influence on how I make or do scenery.  Even making stuff now and painting, I would do things the same way my Dad did for trains.  It is only a matter of time before I start gluing cereal boxes together, weighing them down for months under encyclopedia’s (so they don’t warp while drying) to make “thick” card for buildings and platforms.  Also, if you have a building and you want to put curtains in it… Find an old catologue from Next or something, and cut your curtains out from that with what ever you find takes your liking!

@mage Thanks for the 80s theme, brought back some good memories thinking of the shows and movies I loved from that decade.  Also, love a bit of Motley Crue.  Dr Feelgood is a very treasured album for me!

@biggabum good to see you again!  Also glad you are feeling better, I’m sure losing sight in your eye was a worry!  Enjoy the birthday celebrations and hopefully you get your game in as well.  Never played Warmachine before.

@voidifremoved when the Turtles TV show first came to the UK, they were the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles as Ninja was too violent… how things change!  One idea for the tank, would be to paint a specific area like a hatch or piece of armour a different colour, so it looks like it has been replaced by the Cult but not painted… I always remember seeing the odd car in the 80s that would have had a different coloured door or bonnet… so you knew it was replaced but they didn’t respray the whole car to make it all match.

    And onto the questions!

    (1) How do you deal with a cold or flu?

    Panadol with wiskey and bed.

    (2) Can you hobby when you feel run over?

    The bus is too heavy

    (3) Your opinion on the entertainment industry of the 1980s is…?

Overall a bit meh with a few nuggets of ….good and bad.

    (4) Name a tv show you liked when you were younger or a child

Mimai Vice and The Equalizer as a teen, but thats just the tip of the iceberg. The A-Team, Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazard, Airwolf, The Fall Guy, all in there. I remember Starsky and Hutch being the catalyst for my brother denting my mums car in an attempt to slide over the bonet. Still ROFL remembering the sight of  it.

    (5) What toys or tv shows influenced you, directly or not, a little or a lot into this broad hobby?

D&D at twelve but combined with trainsets, toy soldiers and stuff like Girder and Panel construction sets meant I there was no escaping destiny.

Ahhhh, the 80s. In one song The Electric Boys demonstrate beautifully how we just weren’t quite ready to move on from guitars and hairspray and make-up, no matter how “enlightened” we tried to be at the time…
