Welcome All to another Hobby Weekender!

Intro blurb shamelessly cut and paste below  (again ) :

To the uninitiated, this is a virtual hobby hangout here on the forum. It is something fun and silly with a little more ‘oomph’. Its not just show and tell with your models. Its chatting, getting to know one another, community building. Think of it as a sort of club like hobby session. Everyone is welcome, of course, and there are a few rules to abide by. Let it go as OT as you like with chatting with folks. BoW is a special, unique community, and this little weekly thread is a tradition on these forums. Though not for everyone, if you are still reading and keen, then it is for you. If not, best click out.

We do a few things on this thread that usually lasts from Friday or Saturday til about Wednesday or Thursday. My say is final in this silly little corner of the internet. Fear not, for this is your safe place against the outside world of flame wars, trolling and all that other crap.

    (1) Make a pledge for the weekend. It can be painting, assembly, priming, converting, background writing, terrain, you name it. Just gotta be relevant to hobbying or gaming.

    (2) Chat with people. Be friendly. Do get to know one another, be kind, provide positive reinforcement and constructive criticism. Do not post up your real name, credit card, bank details or home address info.

    (3) I will list out questions. Answer them. Longer answers = more points. Also, points are being assigned to something else as it confused some folk for a while.

    (4) Awards will be given out at the end of the thread and you shall be awarded XP, added to your account profile by the wonderful @lancorz . Think of him as the ever vigilant Batman of the forums who keeps a careful eye on the status quo, but also acts in a way, like Alfred; with a calm disposition and the attentive nature of a concierge.

    (5) Scottish Pub Law rules: no discussion of religion or politics**. Keep it clean. Behave. Be nice, be kind. Walk away if you get angry. Don’t be a dick.

Also there are bonuses for the following ‘Achievements’:
    · Most Valuable Player (most engaged with topic)
    · Fire Starter (topic starter, encourages the member circulation)
    · Hobby Champ (most hobby over the weekend)
    · Meme Lord (ryhmes, funnies & memes)
    · Pun-Tertainment (best pun)
    · Brush Licker (painting & terrain)
    · Headliner DJ (most eclectic music)
    · Armchair Commander (weekend battle reports)
    · Community Usher (helpful & engaged)
    · Storyteller (weekly discussion & story)

Note: All points are awarded in fictional currencies…

And there are weekly questions to get the conversation going. So, for this week:

    1.    Since we Hobbyists tend to get a lot of mail, how do you “deal with” a parcel coming to you? Are you checking the tracking details constantly. always running to the mailbox or are you content to just sit and wait?

    2.    What’s your favourite leftover food to eat straight out of the fridge?

    3.    Are you a fan of Tournaments or Organised Events?

    4.    What’s the best “Socks and Jocks”/”Stocking Stuffer” gift for a Hobbyist?

    5.    You’ve just been given a new rulebook, assume it’s a fantasy/sci-fi genre, what’s the first thing you do? Do you read from page one, look at the artwork, read the fluff, learn the rules or maybe something else?

    My pledge:
    ************

    > Work on some ‘The Hobbit’ miniatures: Bifur, the Goblin Scribe and Radagast. If I finish them, excellent, if not no harm.

    > Post pics of work I completed during the week (Hobbit stuff again)

That’s it! Pledge small, work big and do some add ons.

    My answers to the questions:

    1. Since we Hobbyists tend to get a lot of mail, how do you “deal with” a parcel coming to you? Are you checking the tracking details constantly. always running to the mailbox or are you content to just sit and wait?

Try to make sure I am home of course! HAHAHAHA!!!! I order it to a friends house or to my parcel motel account. It’s the easiest thing to do. Nobody was too pleased when my huge-ass Game of Thrones kickstarter arrived.

    2. What’s your favourite leftover food to eat straight out of the fridge?

Indian. Specfically a Chicken Cheese Kofta. It’s a kind of curry like dish with Indian meatballs, chicken, no veg and a layer of cheeses on top. It is freakin glorious. Glorious I tell you. I had it reheated for breakfast one morning, much to the disgust and naysaying of my parents when I was at theirs for Christmas. I intend on making a tradition out of i.

    3. Are you a fan of Tournaments or Organised Events?

I am, but not win at all cost tournaments or overly competitive events. Sometimes smaller events are better. I hate unpainted, or badly painted bare minimum armies at events. Doubles tournaments are the best imho. Id love to try a BoW hobby weekend thing. To me, it is an event, and it is organised! Though it is not organised play, per se.

As for real tournaments, I need to enter more martial arts ones. After I get back into training more and lose some weight. I need to cut my teeth again with fighting.

    4. What’s the best “Socks and Jocks”/”Stocking Stuffer” gift for a Hobbyist?

Small things that fit in said pockets. Land Raiders, Thor Heavy Walkers, and a game of Thrones army set will not fit. Small blind bag space marines, easy build kits and blister packs do. As well as dice, gaming supplies, tokens, cards and such. As an Orc would say ‘hobby gibbinz’.

    5. You’ve just been given a new rulebook, assume it’s a fantasy/sci-fi genre, what’s the first thing you do? Do you read from page one, look at the artwork, read the fluff, learn the rules or maybe something else?

Flick through it quickly paying attention to the font, structure, consistency of titles, example diagrams/photos, colour pages showing off the faction, fluff, and if there are designers notes or thoughts at the end.

    1. Since we Hobbyists tend to get a lot of mail, how do you “deal with” a parcel coming to you? Are you checking the tracking details constantly. always running to the mailbox or are you content to just sit and wait?

Most stuff I buy is from my FLGS but when a parcel is inbound I track it “permanently” via app 😉

    2. What’s your favourite leftover food to eat straight out of the fridge?

What are leftovers? And even if there was something left, it usually get’s munched the same evening. Seriously I never have frozen leftovers and very rarely do I need to put it in the fridge *g* (Yes, I eat that well and I don’t cook in to big quantities)

    3. Are you a fan of Tournaments or Organised Events?

If they are well done and not to far away. Otherwise I’m happy with any opportunity to game 🙂

    4. What’s the best “Socks and Jocks”/”Stocking Stuffer” gift for a Hobbyist?

A voucher/gift card for his favourite store. That money then *must* be spend on the hobby 😉

    5. You’ve just been given a new rulebook, assume it’s a fantasy/sci-fi genre, what’s the first thing you do? Do you read from page one, look at the artwork, read the fluff, learn the rules or maybe something else?

First look at all the shiny pictures. Then read the intro text. After that flip through the pages. If it has a “introductory fight/mission” that is read more in detail.

And now, it’s 11pm here, off to bed! Huzza!

*wheeee* another weekender. Time sure flies 🙂

It’s unboxing time for me. Got both my kickstarters I had been tracing since last week.
And it’s habblock (10Kg of wood) and Carnevale (a flockin’ big box).

    1. Since we Hobbyists tend to get a lot of mail, how do you “deal with” a parcel coming to you? Are you checking the tracking details constantly. always running to the mailbox or are you content to just sit and wait?

That depends on the type of tracking or if any notification is available at all.
I do get really nervous if it happens to arrive in the weekend as I dare not leave the house until it is delivered or I’m sure it’s not going to happen due to a last minute update.
Usually the packages are delivered at a pickup point, which saves a lot of nerves.

    2. What’s your favourite leftover food to eat straight out of the fridge?
Leftover food ? As in food left over after I’m done eating ? Why would I put crumbs back in the fridge ?

You lot are weird … :-p

    3. Are you a fan of Tournaments or Organised Events?

Never had enough practice to want to join a tournament. Organised events like the bootcamps are a different beast.
I really liked the mini campaigns, because your tiny battle becomes something a bit more meaningful.

    4. What’s the best “Socks and Jocks”/”Stocking Stuffer” gift for a Hobbyist?
    ‘moar stuff’ ? 😉
It’s probably easier to give money instead of trying to figure out what to buy from that strange store they visit …

    5. You’ve just been given a new rulebook, assume it’s a fantasy/sci-fi genre, what’s the first thing you do? Do you read from page one, look at the artwork, read the fluff, learn the rules or maybe something else?

Enjoy the smell of freshly printed rules, look at everything and start dreaming about all of the stuff that can be done …

Hey guys, things are getting better now so i’m going to try to get back into hobby over the next few weeks. May be a bit here and there for a while though.

Firstly thanks to @elessar2590 for hosting.

My pledge, albeit a very loose may or may not happen pledge (the wife cant be left unattended at the moment so hoping my eldest girl will be around for a few hours over the weekend) , will be to try and get a game in of something. Probably Warmachine or WWX.

    Anyway on to the questions

    1) Actually i’m pretty patient with my parcels and dont mind when they turn up…..as long as its next day and before 10 am 😀

    2) Pizza or spag Bol. My granddaughter is five and makes a pretty darn good Spag Bol. OK she needs some help with all the actual cooking, but she makes the sauce herself. Have no idea what she puts in it but its really good and her dolls love it too.

    3) Well I would be but have never managed to get to one. I can’t take Matty because of his Autism and he panics in crowds and it just wouldnt be right to go off and leave my best buddy behind.

    4) Mmmm for the past few years I’ve gone with single figure boxes of what Matty has mentioned he wants, Unit attatchments and the like.

    5) errrrm sniff it…. Yeah i’m a sniffer. I just love that unique smell you get from either new rulebooks or from opening a new boxed game. Wife thinks i’m mad.

@limburger yay we can start a book sniffing club (i was still typing my answer when you posted mate so missed it. Glad to see i’m not the only one though 😀 )

    @biggabum : a book sniffing club ? LOL … that’s just so wrong.

I do love the smell of freshly printed books in the morning 😉

Now I really need to count some sheep and sleeeeppp.

Classic British comedy (Doctor House ;-)) :

    ooh … and 1/6 scale tanks …

I wish I had the skills and tools to commit to such a project.

    First the questions…

    • From experience the best way to deal with parcels is like everything else… “Hurry up and wait”
    • The best leftovers from the fridge is fried chicken. All other things are best heated up before consumption.
    • Organized events are good by me as they normally are just put on by the FLGS. Tournament play is a league beyond and tends to bring out the super competitive that thrive on just beating their opponents with the latest meta list and rubbing their opponents face in defeat to utterly destroy any joy from having played.
    • Best stocking stuffer for a hobbyist depends on the hobbyist but to not throw yourself into buying something they have no interest in I’d put a blanket MicroMark catalog out there. Once the drool and the utterance of “Ooh ooh” end that’s a safe bet that a discussion about future purchases might best be had.
    • A new book means looking at art, fluff, rules are most likely in that order. It builds up the atmosphere for the theater of the mind that the writers are trying to get players involved in.

Augh… stuck at work and losing my mind on a 12hr shift from 1400-0200 local time. Stoner rock is definitely my friend after watching my fill of other YouTube videos. I’ve already made my purchases for Black Friday on Thursday night after work since there is a wonderful time difference between Europe and the US. I’ve failed at staving off the shiny and will be expecting Kromlech, Brother Vinni, Kingdom Death, Litko and The Dice Shop all to be posting me orders of things that will make my hobby and gaming more interesting.

Right now I’m about ready to hit the sack but that’s in just about 2.5 hours. I’ve got plans for the when I’m finally able to get back onto the latest painting but it seems so far away with this schedule. Videos on painting and product reviews are good to pass time with as well if I can’t get to my humble hobby desk.

Letting my brain wander and floating in open mental space I think that there’s a bit of a revelation to be had (outside of the time stamp 38:08 track on the video I provide) I’ll make an early New Year’s pledge. Next Year I will send off at least 30%(if not more) of all the models I now own.

I’m not getting out of the hobby by any means, I’m going to whittle down my collection and not be a hoarder that has bare metal/resin lying around. It will be a challenge that I should audit but counting all my figures takes away from doing the work. Yes, big change…big change… it’ll make room for larger things and more detailed work.

This isn’t something I can blame later on drinking and not being in my right mind (though my mental health may get questioned by my particular tastes).

Ok everybody, starting next year I will keep all posted as far as progress.

just finished unwrapping all the bubble wrap … soo many lovely bubbles. *pop* *crackle* *pop* …

*eh* .. the art in the Carnevale art book is amazing.

The ‘gift of the harbinger’ scenarios all involve a single exclusive npc that is part of the kickstarter.
They may not be the best, but they provide an interesting story.
I think the one with the funeral gondela (an escort mission with a twist) is probably one that is the best of the bunch.

Okay, pictures incoming. Busy with getting groceries, cooking, tyding, dog minding and such. Doing some minis now. A bit more Hobbit, some ASOIAF and Mordheim on the side. Pics incoming.

So for my birthday next week we will be playing a Mordheim campaign marathon. I might have bitten off more than I can chew with trying to convert up, paint minis and paint terrain as well. Not sure I will get it all done. But I shall try!

So far there is Witch Hunters (yours truly), Possessed (the misses, awkward LOL), Undead, Orcs and Goblins and possibly Middenheimers. More to follow.

The possessed model was built last night, primed today and painted today with more work to follow.

Goblin town was primed gradually over the last few days and washed just there. It was primed Zandri Dust and washed in Reikland Fleshshade (by accident: I meant to do Seraphim Sepia).

The iron throne I started painting during the week. Due to my liberal application of paint as well as the large surface area, I spaced out each step of the Iron Thrones over a period of a few days: Tin Bitz basecoat, Leadbelcher drybrush, AP Platemail Drybursh, Nuln Oil Wash. I just did the wash and it is drying now.

Hey All, hope your collective weekends are going well 🙂

    @elessar2590 thanks for hosting!

    1.    Since we Hobbyists tend to get a lot of mail, how do you “deal with” a parcel coming to you? Are you checking the tracking details constantly. always running to the mailbox or are you content to just sit and wait?

I tend to be fairly ambivalent about things arriving. I used to get really excited and sweat on the arrival of a particular package, but I have a much more relaxed approach now. As long as it arrives in due course then that’s fine. There are some courier companies that I would prefer senders didn’t use as their collection points are difficult to get to outside standard business hours, but as most places don’t announce their preferred locally partnered courier for international orders I guess you just have to roll with it. Not too much of a concern in the grand scheme of things 🙂

    2.    What’s your favourite leftover food to eat straight out of the fridge?

Leftovers?…. Nope, all the food goes into my tummy after I make it 🙂 OK, leftover fried rice maybe…

    3.    Are you a fan of Tournaments or Organised Events?

I used to be (WHFB 6th and 7th eds). Nowadays I can’t settle on one rules system and don’t really want to invest the time in keeping up with what all the new units mean for all the armies in a particular game. Also, while I have had pretty good luck in the past, there are a certain type of gamer that you tend to run into at tournaments and they are not by and large the ones that I would seek out socially.

    4.    What’s the best “Socks and Jocks”/”Stocking Stuffer” gift for a Hobbyist?

Greenstuff! No wait, Glue!, No, brushes! More paint! Basing material! Dice! Scenic elements! MDF carts! …ok there are actually a fair few, and that’s without the ubiquitous mini in blister packaging…

    5.    You’ve just been given a new rulebook, assume it’s a fantasy/sci-fi genre, what’s the first thing you do? Do you read from page one, look at the artwork, read the fluff, learn the rules or maybe something else?

For ‘rulebooks’ as in the core rules of a game I’ll flick through and try and get a quick handle on the layout of a book and what’s contained within as far as the size/weighting of relevant sections. I’kk then start at the front and go through the intro, opening lorre and core rules. I’ll then usually skim the additional special rules, detailed lore, spells/equipment sections before coming back later on to do a proper read. For ‘supplements’ such as army books I used to end up going straight for the ‘crunch’ as I got annoyed every time a factions backstory was rewritten for the narrative of the current games system…

No formal hobby pledge this week as I have a bunch of stuff on- will keep chipping away at what’s on my painting desk when the opportunity presents and post progress as it happens.

Responses to everyone’s posts later 🙂
