So what do you think is the most generic type of mat?

Obviously snow and dessert aren’t that generic but neither are “wasteland ruins”

I always end up with “grass and mud” but maybe I’m missing something? What would be the most generic mat that you could use for almost every system and game?

Perhaps if you add rust and metal part’s sticking through as many battles are fought time and time again in the same place part from the previous battles could still be their?

I think desert and snow are pretty generic, because they can work across multiple scales. This was used in the FoW and Bolt-action bootcamps, both had a desert theme.

Grass can be tricky to use across multiple scales as the fine detail that works in skirmish games starts to look kind of ridiculous at 15 mm.

The empty sea variant is generic enough type as well.

And let’s not forget the emptyness of space … so a generic black map with stars will be good enough as a background for X-wing.

Grass mat, although it doesn’t work well as a dungeon background or for grimy cities.

I’ve also been using these Loke Battlemats for gaming.

I would probably go with plain old grass.  I can’t think of many games it couldn’t be used for.
