The Pyrrhic Wars - Hail Caesar

The Pyrrhic Wars // Hail Caesar

Inside this book, you'll find all of the information you need for fighting the campaigns of Pyrrhus of Epirus. There will be, as always, a wealth of historical background information covering Pyrrhus, his clashes with the Roman Republic and more on his allies, enemies and the battles that took part during that campaign.

This supplement will also have you commanding the arm of Pyrrhus against one of his many, many enemies using twelve detailed army lists. You can then battle through twelve new scenarios that cover the exploits of Pyrrhus. Battle against the Successor Kings, the Romans, clashes in Sicily and then his adventures in Greece.

You'll also note that this book comes with a pre-order exclusive miniature from Warlord Games. This shows off Pyrrhus of Epirus on foot, decked out in his full panoply and ready to lead his troops from the front. A miniature sculpted by Marco Sano.

The Pyrrhic Wars Miniature Collection

If you're looking for more miniatures to play out The Pyrrhic Wars, you have loads of options to choose from via Warlord Games. We start with another take on Pyrrhus of Epirus, this time on horseback.

Pyrrhus of Epirus - Hail Caesar

Pyrrhus of Epirus // Hail Caesar

This puts Pyrrhus in the saddle, leading his army from the back of his steed so he can get to where he's needed. He was a fine general and when it came to clashing with the Romans, he would bring his mighty pike phalanxes up against them for the first time. You'll find full rules for him included in the supplement above.

If you're looking for more big names to throw into your games, how about the Antigonid Heroes set?

Antigonid Heroes - Hail Caesar

Antigonid Heroes // Hail Caesar

This set comes with two characters. The first is Antigonus Monopthalmus, one of the greatest of the Macedonian generals who fought under Alexander the Great and Philip II of Macedon. He was incredibly close to reuniting Alexander's empire but was defeated and killed at the Battle of Ipsus.

He is also joined in the set by Demetrius Poliorcetes, known as The Besieger. He was the son of Antigonus and gained the title of The Besieger for his famous Siege of Rhodes and the development of siege engines. He didn't just smash fortifications down, either, as he also helped to fortify cities like Athens and Corinth.

Sticking with more heroes, you can also pick up The Diadochi.

The Diadochi - Hail Caesar

The Diadochi // Hail Caesar

The Diadochi (Successors) refer to Alexander's generals who inherited and split up his vast empire in 323 BC. Each of these generals at one time or another declared themselves king, trying to reunite the empire under their own rule. One of the most famous was Ptolemy I Soter (Saviour). He took control of Egypt and founded the well-known Ptolemaic dynasty. He was an ally to Pyrrhus and actively aided him in taking back the throne of Epirus.

The second of the characters in the set was a close friend of Alexander's father. Lysimachus inherited the lands of Thrace and later expanded his rule to dominate Macedon and Asia Minor in part. He was an occasional ally of Ptolemy and Pyrrhus, but he would also fight against another of the Successor Kings, Seleucus. He was eventually defeated and killed at the Battle of Corupedium.

No war can be fought without troops and you can also get your hands on a range of soldiers fit for the Pyrrhic Wars.

Illyrian Nobles Regiment - Hail Caesar

Illyrian Nobles Regiment // Hail Caesar

We start with the Illyrian Nobles, who were well-armed and armoured warriors. They were often completely decked out in bronze breastplates, greaves and helmets. Despite all of the armour, the Illyrians were well-known as raiders, ambushers and skirmishers, armed with their spears, javelins and sica.

These Nobles would have been your elite shock troops on the battlefield or heavily armed skirmishers that could go toe to toe with whatever they might face.

Slightly less well-armoured, you also have the Illyrian Warriors.

Illyrian Warriors Regiment // Hail Caesar

The Illyrians were a collection of tribal peoples who came from what is now the western Balkans and the Adriatic coast. They were exposed to Greek culture, meaning that their forces fought similarly on the battlefield. They are noted to probably be the inspiration for the thureophoroi who fought within many Hellenistic armies. This set covers that lighter, ambush force that you might need for waylaying the enemy.

You can buy the regiments above as full blocks of infantry, or you can pick up individual packs if you prefer. If you'd prefer to indulge in a bit of siegecraft like Demetrius Poliorcetes, then you can also get three sets of artillery crews with an array of weaponry.

Hellenistic Greek Light Artillery Bolt Throwers - Hail Caesar

Ballista with Hellenistic Crew - Hail Caesar

Onager with Hellenistic Crew - Hail Caesar

You can choose from the classic Bolt Thrower, plus the Ballista and the Onager. All served as good ways of hammering the enemy fortifications from afar and spooking the enemy. As well as buying these as a set of three, you can also buy them individually if you'd prefer.

Could this new set of pre-orders be enough to draw you into The Pyrrhic Wars and play out some of the campaigns for yourself?
