Mortem et Gloriam Interview With Simon Hall | PSC Games
May 2, 2020 by dignity
We're joined by Simon Hall to take us through exactly what Mortem et Gloriam is and why we should be excited by it!
Justin is in the studio to talk about the ancient battle system that has built a solid community over the last number of years in Mortem Et Gloriam. Simon takes us through how PSC Games are collaborating with him on producing a shiny rulebook for the game and where this game system can go in the future.
What ancient force do you want to take on to the tabletop?

Nice interview. Still haven’t looked at the rules yet. Looking forward to seeing some of the Ultracast stuff up close
They paint up really nicely. Showed some today.
I love that profile piccies BTW.

Heres a few pained Roman plastics for you
I am finding myself more and more interested in earlier and earlier historical warfare so I am looking forward to having a good look at MeG. I am really hopeful the feel is as distinct as Simon mentions. Ticks a lot of boxes though, small table space, quick games and 15mm all the way through to massive game sizes.
The pre-game is a great concept as it is one of my favourite in Chain of Command. The use of colours and chits could be an interesting implementation of friction.
Looking forward to the live event to get more info.
Hope you made it and enjoyed it. Getting used to the tech. Pacto games in an hour are proving really fun. I am currently running a 65 player campaign using it. You can follow it on FB @wargamecampaigns. Managed to run the campaign and fight 14 battles in 4 weeks with ease. Hope you will join in the fun.
Thanks for the response Simon.
I missed the event but watched the intro you did about a month back. As with all games there are things that make sense straight away and other things that can leave you scratching your head at the design decisions.
From the into, the friction effect, I am assuming that is the reason for the colour command usage, seems to work well. I wasnt sure on the dice mechanism before seeing the intro but when combined with the ranked unit mechanic I think I like it. I am sure it would be quite fast once you get your head around it but I really like the ebb and flow shown along with the focus and exploitation of weak points. Not having fought in any ancient battle myself, despite what my kids may think I am not quite that old, it just seems to feel right.
The slowing effect of missile fire, well explained and * shrug * it sounds historically accurate. From the intro, the range seemed very short but that could have been the weapon type or effective range or a design decision. I am curious about routing, does it always result in unit elimination and were some armies better able to resist that half strength rule as shown. ie. better trained, morale or generals? I only ask as it could feel a little generic (that rule) without differences. But I am not a great student of history (or anything really).
I will likely pick up the rules on the understanding that there are no historical players near me, but one day if someone asks, even hints at the suggestion of a small interest in it I will be prepared 🙂
Glad you liked the idea into game. Came up with a few unique ones to reign realism to things I felt were missing. Better quality drops tend to hit the 50% much less easily, and don’t suffer as much from panic spreads from ‘rout test’. KISS
On routs in this period there is almost zero rallying. Once they break its over. So we have rallying in the campaign rules only. Plus cluttering up a table with routers and rallying east game space and time so I always prefer to err on getting them out fo the way so the game keeps pace and moves on.
Welcome aboard I hope!
