About the Project

Lately, I've been running war games every weekend with members of the community via web conference. Players log on and play wargames with each other in real time, regardless of location, and we usually have at least a couple spectators as well. Many times it’s been Darkstar, but we’re also running wargames in Panzer Leader, Arab-Israeli Wars, and now Valor & Victory.

BoW/OTT community members @brucelea, @damon, @davehawes, and @rasmus have taken the plunge, leading battalions across thousands of meters of desert, starfleets in pitched battles across the heavens, or vicious firefights in the jungles of Vietnam, all without leaving the comfort of their home.

Hard-core, old-school command-tactical wargames can now be run (complete with spectators and recordings) in real time, with BOTH PLAYERS moving pieces across THE SAME virtual game board, thus maintaining player agency, speedy and instant results (no play by e-mail), interwoven turn sequences, any questions / feedback instantly received and addressed, and with the game being virtually recorded as it goes, a ready-made battle report can actually be created as we go.

All of this without the players having to install any new software on their computer, on any platform (PC or Mac). All that's needed is to agree on a time, a handful of dice, and a bellyful of courage!

Every weekend can now be a boot camp! All without costing me thousands of dollars in airfare, too!

Hello everyone. Here is the video playback from Sunday’s stream, where Bill and  I sat down for a game of Panzer Leader, recreating the Battle of Celles (25 December, 1944).

Part of the Battle of the Bulge, we recreate 2nd US Armored Division’s “CCB” hitting the right wing of the spearhead of 2nd Panzer Division (XLVII Panzer Corps, 5th Panzer Army) at the very apex of the German advance in the Ardennes Offensive.

Join Oriskany Jim and Bill (Sitrep 6) for a rare look of two armored spearheads hitting each other in simultaneous advances. The example we’re looking at is the counterattack of 2nd US Armored Division against faltering forward elements of 2nd Panzer Division near Celles, Belgium in December 1944, recreated (in part) in Avalon Hill’s Panzer Leader.

This was the very apex of the German advance during the infamous “Battle of the Bulge” – widely regarded as the largest single engagement in the history of the United States Army.

Battleship Showdown - "Naval War" System - Live Game

Oriskany Jim and Mark Ritchie sit down for a game of H. J. Seimonsgergen’s “Naval War” – depicting part of the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on the night of 14-15 November, 1942.

Although the Pacific War is typically dominated by aircraft carriers and submarines, heavy cruisers and battleships could still play a key role not only in escort, AA defense, and shore bombardment, but also old-school gunnery duels. These almost always took place at night, when aircraft operations were limited. Through late 1942 and early 43, the US and Japanese navies fought a bitter, non-stop series of naval engagements in the Solomon Islands, many of them surface engagements at night.

One of the largest of these was the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, where Japanese battleships like the Kirishima tangled with American battlewagons like and USS Washington and South Dakota – a heavyweight slugging match for the ages.
