About the Project
Hey everybody! Sam here, aka MrStainless, aka Sam from the Tabletop Hub. So I just got my hands on a copy of Strontium Dog by Warlord Games and much like my other MAAP projects this is to show you my progress and attempt at painting the miniatures for the game! The 'My Attempt At Painting' series is a series for the amateur and beginner painter out there, I'm still a fledgling painter myself but hopefully by watching these videos and checking out these posts it'll help you progress on your journey. If I can do it, so can you!

Impetigo Jones - A Work In Progress
So after the mini painting being affected by moving house I’ve managed to paint another miniature so hopefully I’ll be able to get these projects back on track.
This is Impetigo Jones complete, the base is incredibly simple simply because my basing materials are still in storage.
I should have a video guide up here in the next couple of weeks.

My Attempt At Painting Gronk - Strontium Dog
Hey everyone Sam here from the Tabletop Hub, and today I’m bringing you a new game here on the My Attempt At Painting series as I take a look at Warlord Games’ Strontium Dog. Now if you’re new here to the Tabletop Hub, the My Attempt At Painting series is really for the amateur and beginner painter out there, I’m still learning to paint miniatures myself and my hope is that I pick up a brush and begin to learn and improve that you too will be encouraged to pick up a brush and do the same.
As always with my painting guides things are going to be kept pretty simple, we’re only using a handful of paints and a couple of cheats to help us get ahead. I decided to start off painting the starter set with Gronk because honestly he was the smallest mini and I had a very good idea of how I’d paint him once I saw him. So the idea here was to start off confident and then get to the trickier mini’s later down the line.
So with that said, to start off with I primed Gronk here in Matte White, the idea here is that his fur is primarily going to be white and priming him in this colour will just shave off some painting time.
Next I wanted to add some weathering to the bottom of his fur, at the end of the day he’ll have been trawling through mud and space dirt and his fur should reflect that so I took some of Army Painters Skeleton Bone and very lightly dry brushed this at the bottom of his body.
Next I took Citadels Nuln Oil and gave the fur a wash, for this I really wanted to bring definition to the fur and help it stand out and again if you feel like you overdo it at this stage, don’t be afraid to dry brush some Matte White.
Next I took Citadels Kislev Flesh and painted all of the skin.
Now while that was drying I began work on the medkit that Gronk has with him, so I took Army Painters Army Green and began to paint the edges of the medkit, the handle and the ends of it. For this I’m working off an image I’ve seen of Gronk from the graphic novels but really you can feel free to implement whatever colour scheme you prefer for your medkit.
After that was done I took some Army Painters Dragon Red and very messily painted the patch where the medical cross is, I want to point out that you don’t have to paint it messily, I just ended up being pretty messy when I painted it. If you do the same, again don’t worry, just grab your Matte White once you’re done and cover up any mistakes, you’re equally going to want to take that Matte White and paint the white cross as well.
Once that was done I once again took Citadels Nuln Oil and gave the medkit a wash, really trying to add emphasis on the areas I’d painted with the Army Green to bring out the definition there.
Next it was on to the part I was most worrisome of, highlighting. So if you’ve seen a few of my painting guides you’ll know that I don’t really highlight, it scares me, I suck at it, but it’s a new year and I thought it was about time to challenge myself so I took Citadels Flayed One Flesh and began to add highlights to the skin. If you’ve never done highlighting before it’s terrifying because once you add those first couple of highlights you immediately think you’ve ruined your model. You’ve just got to have conviction I think when it comes to this process and visualise what it will look like when you’re done, not what it does look like while you’re doing it because honestly after a while and after I’d highlighted a couple of areas I was actually really pleased with how it turned out.
By the way, for the eyes, just a little cheat again, if you want to add eyeballs very easily to your mini just get a fine marker. That’s what I did.
Finally for the base I got some of Vallejo’s mud in a tub and just began layering, Gronk has that little metal base that is quite raised so I just had to add layer after layer to smooth that out and give it a nice gradient and I’ll likely add some grass or fauna to this at a later date.
But folks that is it, I’m really happy with how this model came out, it was my first painted mini of 2019 and I’m super pleased. If you want to check out Strontium Dog I’ve got a review coming later in the week which I’ll be sure to post here in the project but I’ve left a link in the above video where you can go check out the game on Warlord’s site, little sneak peak, I think it’s pretty awesome.
Hope you’re all having a great week and I’ll speak to you all soon!

Gronk Photo Gallery
Well, thats Gronk finished and I’m really pleased with how he turned out. For the first time I actually did some edge highlighting and although it may not show up very well on these photos…it was terrifying.
It’s tough when you start the highlighting process because you think you’re ruining the model. It’s only once you kind of get everything done that you can sit back and actually take it in and realise that it’s not half bad.
Now on to the next one! Video guide will be coming in a week or two!

Gronk - A Work In Progress
So for the new year I decided that in 2019 I would paint more miniatures, more regularly.
If I want to get better at painting and better at the hobby I need to practice and be more disciplined.
I recently got my hands on a copy of Strontium Dog (it’s a really fun game) and I’m kicking things off with what I saw as the easiest mini (nothing wrong with a bit of cheating/ easing ones self into it).
This is Gronk, he’s a furry little fellow and he’s almost complete! I’ll be sure to bring you all a complete video guide and written guide on how I painted the little guy very soon!
Here’s to a hobby-filled 2019!
