Rangers of Shadow Deep – Solo play project

About the Project
I watched Ash Barker play this game on his YouTube channel Guerrilla Miniature Games as a let's play and I decided I wanted to get these rules. These rules are from the author of Ghost Archipelago and Frostgrave. I love Frostgrave, made lots of terrain and started on warbands and a bestiary of bad guys, but never actually got to play. This project shows my steps into getting my head into the rules, my warbands created, the minis painted and to try and get some games played.

Terrain
Saxon dwelling from Blotz to help me get through my early scenarios.
Vallejo Iraqi Sand as a base, Vallejo Air Golden Brown on all the wood, all the exterior washed with Agrax Earthshade, then a highlight of Iraqi Sand and matt white mix. I hit bits of the wood for grain and covering up mistakes with Snakebite Leather Contrast paint.
Flesh Golem
I didn’t know what a Flesh Golem was.
I looked up a definition online.
“A flesh golem was a ghoulish collection of body parts, stitched together into a single composite form.
This is my Flesh Golem.
Not as dramatic and big as many others, (no frankenstein’s monster) but I am happy with the conversion. Made from multiple parts and stapled and sown together seen here as he stumbles through a derelict house in an abandoned village.
Made from…
Wargames Factory zombie head
Wargames Factory zombie sprue left forearm
Mantic Games Ghoul torso with spikes and hands removed
Mantic Games Dwarf right gloved hand
Warlord Games Celtic Warrior legs.
***
Because i decided his big right fist looked like an oven glove, i painted the hand more like a gauntlet and am happier now.
Shadow Knight
Hasslefree miniatures Lord Ulthrak. He is probably going to be my Shadow Knight in one of the first book’s latter scenarios.
Was tempted to pick some of the details out in gold, but decided that looking more plain made him look more menacing.
The cloak was mostly Wyldwood Contrast paint over a grey and black rattle can zenith.
The blue at his front is the high pigment turquoise looking Contrast paint over a mostly black primed part of the model.
Kitbash Zombies
Can’t be far from the number of Zombies needed for the first scenario. ?
Spooky.
Piece of basing on his right when hit with some white highlights turned out to show a skull. ? Not intended when i put down some off cuts of plastic sprue as stones.
This Zombie is made from…
Wargames Factory zombie sprue left arm
Warlord Games Bolt Action Japanese right arm
Mantic Games Ghoul torso with spike and arms removed
Mantic Games Zombie legs
Mantic Games Ghoul head
And this one has a proper clawing for your brains pose. ?
Only a Mantic Games Ghoul head swap this time. Otherwise fully a Mantic Games fantasy zombie.
Basing was fun. Chipped the hard edges off of the circle tab base and hid it amongst stones (metal sprue pieces at the front), grit (flock stuck down and painted black and dry brushed grey white) and pebbles (the stones at the back of the base is kitty litter – unspoiled.)
Then I made this guy with a Ghoul torso and legs with a zombie head. All Mantic Games fantasy. Even the Dwarf broken statue head on the base is from Mantic.
Bits box zombie
Bits box zombie. Mantic fantasy bitz box I got on ebay is a gift that keeps on giving. This guy was painted in thick white paint and was missing one arm and two hands. Greenstuff dried up left overs and a bit of zombie skin painting fun and this guy is good enough to play a part. Obvious having a rotten mangled hand and just a stump doesn’t make him terrifying offensively, but I guess in a horde setting and with a few good teeth left in his face, he may well be the biter that takes you out.
Radagast the Prismatic
What happened to Radagast the Brown? He became Radagast the Prismatic. ?
Wizard for a new Frostgrave warband or perhaps part of my Rangers of Shadow Deep warband.
Community Spotlight: Wild Wizards, Tiny Troops & Mystical Mice
Yay! I got a Golden Button for this little fella. ?
Gnoll Sergeant Zim
Zim is nice and colourful.
Not sure how many of these you can use in game, but it seemed a waste not to use this weapon and these arms from the northstarminiatures gnoll sprue.
Gnoll Gunny
Needed a touch more work here and there at this stage. The Contrast Dark Angel green came out quite glossy so need to dull it down a bit. I like the shield design. I think this counts as a gnoll sergeant with the Double handed weapon.
Finished this guy. Knocked back the glossy contrast dark angels green with a thin watery coat of warpstone glow.
