Ebony Maw Complete
Finished Ebony Maw. He was very challenging to paint, what with the blue trim interacting with white fabric and the white fabric interacting with yellow. Still trying to get the transitions right. I like that I finally have proper terrain to act as a backdrop. Next up I plan on painting Wasp as I want to get her transparent wings on before I lose them, but I don’t want to put them on until she’s painted. After that I might knock out Ant-man before I go back to finishing the Black Order.
Wasp ready to go. The conversion with the dice was really fun to do.
I didn’t like the rebar piece that she normally comes on as it makes her look larger than I feel she should look instead of insect sized, so I decided to use a common object to make her look much smaller. I’m really happy with how it turned out and I did something similar with Ant-Man, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise on that one.
She was a blast to paint and even shading the die was a lot of fun. As usual, the pics make all my shading and highlighting look blocky, but in person it looks much smoother. I have a feeling I’m going to be making that complaint for a long time. At least until I can get a permanent photo station set up for minis.
This is just part 1. I’m also going to post the larger version of her and then both together.
Update: Couldn’t really see her yellow highlights in the pics, so I brought the yellow up to full white. Took new pics and it seems to have done the trick.
Wasp, but bigger this time.
And here she is “normal” sized. Pretty happy with how she came out. I’m not a huge fan of the wings, just because I would’ve preferred to get an iridescent shimmer on them, but couldn’t really find a good way to do that, so I compromised and just used Aethermatic Blue and Shyish Purple contrast paints and some gloss varnish to get a shine on them.
Outside of that, I was really happy with the transitions I got on the black on her. They all feel really natural and I can see I’ve come a long way on highlighting black up to white.
Update: Someone on Reddit had the idea to put a little dice on her base to match the conversion I did for her shrunken version and I couldn’t not do it. Updated the pics to match the addition.
Wasp, in pint size and regular size.
Here’s Wasp, both big and small, ready for the tabletop. She was a lot of fun to paint and I really got to see how far I’ve come with painting yellow and black, which are both really challenging colors to paint effectively. The dice was also a really fun conversion to pull off and surprisingly fun and challenging to paint.
Read below for specific insights regarding each model as each one was kind of it’s own project.
Update: New pics. I brought up mini Wasp’s yellow highlights as the camera wasn’t catching them and I added small die to the base on big Wasp so make the conversions match.
Ant Man, regular size
Finished up Ant Man this week. Really like how he came out. I’m getting much more comfortable with the black and I think the red-to-orange pairs well with it. The most challenging part was the NMM on the helmet, which I think it serviceable, but easily the area where I can do the most improvement.
Going to post pics of the mini version of him next.
Ant Man, itty bitty
And here’s little Ant Man. Pretty happy with this conversion. I think the button might be a little on the big side, but overall I think it gets the point across. Doing the highlighting on the miniature when it’s so tiny is really awkward, but I suppose it’s good practice for working on small details of regular sized minis.
Next up some pics of both of them together, then on to the Black Order.
Ant Man, regular and itty bitty
Here is Ant Man, both mini size and regular size. Fun models to convert/paint. With him done, I am finally done with the Avengers (save for new Black Widow, which I’m waiting for the film to drop before I paint). So now I am moving on to the Black Order which will finish with Thanos. Then I’m either going to move on to Defenders or more likely X-Men since they’ll be out by then I’m sure.
Bullseye
I’m trying to sludge through the Black Order and really struggling with it due to lack of interest in the characters (other than Thanos, but I’m saving him for last). So, to give myself something to be excited about painting, I decided to shift focus to a character I was more excited to paint. I really love painting blue and white, so Bullseye was a very tempting character for me to paint. He was really fun and pretty easy to knock out. I don’t know how I would ever tolerate painting white if it weren’t for Corax White base. It really makes a process that would otherwise be tedious into one that is genuinely fun.
Not sure what I’ll be painting next. I’m about to be taking some time off of work, so I’m hoping to crank out quite a few models during that time. See if I can get mostly caught up by the time the new year hits.
