About the Project

Sometimes you just don't want to paint what you need to paint! I've loads of stuff to paint up for games and systems that will be hitting the table soon but I just didn't fancy painting any of it. A change is as good as a rest, in this project I'm going to paint up a beholder for no other reason than I want to and I want to make a decent job of it. So this is just a short project where I paint up a Dungeons and Dragons Beholder.

This Project is Completed

As I wearly put down my brush from painting a mini I didn’t really fancy doing, I caught a glimpse of a beholder, beckoning me from a dusty shelf.

I had some bonemeal paint left on my pallet so I made a start.

This mini, I think is one of the official dnd ones and I have to say, I think it looks fantastic!

Priced at around £8.00 it’s a real steal.

The model is pre primed and come with alternate eye stalks, some firing spells, some innert.

In this stage I painted the inside of the mouth.

The gums are Scale 75 instant paints love affair red.

The tongue is love affair red mixed with a little Fairy blood.

The inside of the mouth is a reverse of the above with Fairy blood mixed with a little love affair red.

The surround of the large eye is again Fairy blood.

Note – Fairy blood is apparently bluey purple.

The spells being fired off from some of the stalks were reasonably simple.

  • Red ink with yellow ink at the extremity for the fire looking spell.
  • Blue ink for the lighting
  • Green ink for the blasty looking spell
  • Purple ink (red an blue mix because I don’t have purple ink) for the remaining spell

I really couldn’t resist that pun!

Next was the large Central Eye.

I started with a scale 75 instant blue but quite watered down. I almost flicked it on really lightly with the brush. Then I added a bit of light brown, again watered down, towards the centre just flicked on lightly as before
The white of the eye I added a bit of really watered down red towards the edge and while still wet moved it around a bit to how I wanted it.

The Eyes have it

Towards the end of this painting session I started on the main body. Simply blending a blue instant paint into a green.

Lots more to do.yet but I’m making some decent progress.

I made some good progress tonight.

Paint is down on the main body, blending blue to green to yellow.

All of the eye stalks are now painted.

These are done with a bit of green and yellow.

I have added a bit of effect to the teeth and gums with a strong tone wash and brown instant paint.

All finished!

Loved painting this and made good use of my Scale 75 instants.

Smaller eyes done with a white base followed of a Fuegan Orange shade.

Rocky base was a Shadow black instant paint, dry brush rust colour and finished with a strong tone wash.

I altered the back of the mini a bit giving it a boney spine as I thought it was a bit bland originally.
