About the Project
I recently printed a few slums buildings and I immediately thought of the shades. I generally make enough terrain to fill a 6x4 , but how would it go if properly focused on a 2x2 or 3x3 fantasy city street scene. Then I recalled an old Osprey game called Kobolds and Cobblestones. I reckon it's time to have a good nose through my fantasy prints and have a look at Knucklebones miniatures again.

Scatter terrain.
Made an attempt to get some more scatter built. Didn’t last long before I lost the will!
Townsfolk
I made a start on some townsfolk, quite pleased with how they turned out.
There's a market for that
With a set of guards in the bag I figured it was time to add a little street clutter. I have a bunch of bits and bobs from King games, Oshiro and Scotia Grendel among others. I have always wanted to make a detailed market scene and I think I now have all the requisite parts. Should actually get a game of Guards in around 2028 when I have finished painting everything.
Guards! Guards!
With the arrival of the Guards of Traitors’ Toll rules and plastic miniatures I decided to get a couple of warbands painted up. As much as I am itching to have a play with all the Wargames Atlantic medieval kits and start bashing them together I am being patient.
I have been curating a collection of city folk for several months, so I rooted through those for some suitable guards. Figures come from a variety of places, the ones pictured are mostly King Games but there are a few Midlam miniatures and at least one Bad Squiddo figure.
These are going to be a challenge, lots of little details to go at. I am beginning to detest fancy puffling pants.
WIP update. Progress has been slow by my own standards. But the guards are progressing.
Back to it.
With the pre-order launch for Guards of Traitors’ Toll I was spurred into action.
The owner of the FLGS, Boards and Swords in Derby, seems pretty hyped about this, so I decided it was time to get painting the town again.
24 hours later and the first three colours down, next step is changing the colour of some of the individual stones, then a bit of dusty cement effects ( the messy bit), then a lighter tone on the wattle and daub. Next is the worst part, the wood, this requires a degree of neatness, I am using miniatures paint as the higher pigmentation means a stronger tone that the muted craft paints I have used this far.
Yesterday was messy, I applied pigment powder to the stonework. This gives a mortar effect on the stones, unfortunately the stonework is quite shallow and I have yet to master the technique. Anything too overpowering can be toned down with the wash and moss effects if necessary.
Next step is the second layer on the upper storeys.
The timber is proving to be the massive chore I anticipated it would be, but it will all make sense after a dark wash and a drybrush, I hope!
An alternative to objective tokens
I had a bit of a brainwave for a Traitors Toll scenario. Uncomplimentary posters have been appearing on buildings and require ripping down. Potentially there could be NPC’s re-posting them to be apprehend as well.
I printed some posters out and then attached two magnets to the back, keeping track of polarities . Sprayed them white, drew designs on them. Hit them with a matt varnish, then speedpaint over the top.
Then I took one of the magnets off of the top and glued it to a building, painted it dull grey. Hit it with matt varnish to take the shine off the glue
The District Wall
I decided to add a table spanning district wall, the city has so much terrain that it won’t all fit on one table. So, over time I will be adding different districts.I thought it might be fun to have scenarios spanning different districts with a wall and gate house spanning them.
