there already exists a model of Abyssal Terror
Lies 😛 there is but it is pretty awful xD
On the VAmpire vs Necromancer, it is cool to have a tooled yp 400 pt vamp lord running around but with him being in combat a lot he is more likely to die, where as if you take a combat lord and spend points on a master necromancer lv 4 it allows you to have your main wizard sit beinhd your lines and in a unit out of the way not die.
problem with ghoul king is that for 25 points a normal vamire can get ASF which means that he pretty much gets rerolls all the time and he has the better stats.
i agree on the banshee and wraith, only real point to them would be to protect say your lv4 or what not from a nasty challange, but then they become the special choice they are very nice indeed, Hello unit of 6 runnning up to a warshpinx or orther monsters 😉
What comes to lord choices I have nothing against Master Necromancer but I can’t really see myself using one over Vampire Lord. Then again I am not into those zombie summon horde builds that some gamers seem to be into so I don’t really have reason to run Master Necromancer. I love how Vampire Lord can be customized into personal preference.
What comes to hero choices its intresting that both Cairn Wraith and Tomb Banshee are in it. That defenetly brings some new options what comes to VC hero choices.
I actually find the vampires to be so incredibly versatile now as with their stats they are pretty good off the bat you can make pure magic and cause all sorts of trouble and can still fend themselves if they get into combat. You can make them into a combo so they can help out in multiple or you can make in CC powerhouse capable of tearing a dragon apart without much difficulty.
Necromancers both types I find are nice spell casters supporting your army and in 3000pt games if you’ve got a cc lord then having a master necromancer as your main spellcaster is helpful as well otherwise a couple of level 2’s does the job.
The ghoul king I’m glad it’s returned but I’m not to sure on it yet but I feel give him fly and stick with some varghiests and he could cause trouble but need to see him in combat a bit more before I make a opinion and as even in 5th and 6th ed I didn’t touch Strigoi much so not sure how much the lack of armour affects him.
Wight Kings I find are pretty decent and actually who I try and get a challenge with (minus my BSB) as they are reasonably tough and capable of lopping their opponents head off though I do miss the sword of kings.
Cairn Wraiths and Banshees I’ve always liked and the fact you can field them as heroes means it’s almost possible to field a pure wraith army… now that I think about Master Necromancer, some skels, banshees in the units, some hex wraiths and some cairn wraith units hmmmm… ohh don’t look at me like that wallet.
For the mounts I find the big things once again like all big things should be in 3000pt+ games as then you have room for back ups if things go wrong with the big guy and you can usually field ruddy thing along with giving your lord some equipment as well. Still I actually quite like all of the big guys but you are going to make a Lahmian themed force you need the coven throne it just screams Lahmia.
Anyway I’ve been using a combat lord with the following setup. Lord with barded nightmare, shield, heavy armour, sword of bloodshed, red fury, quickblood, staff of damnation, lvl 2 upgrade hanging out with a unit of black knights. So far only had one battle but he has proven himself after splatting 4 ogres in one round of combat due to sheer number of attacks and rerolls from ASF and then doing the same to some leadbelchers. Also got a necromancer for support another mounted vampire who just has basic equipment and book of arkhan to help out elsewhere and wight king mounted with BS and it’s worked so far but need some more testing before I do anything else.
Why bother making the Wight King a BSB? The entire army is immune to psych the only time you need to roll ld is when you crumble and even then all it does is cause 1 less wound which is hardly worth 25 pts.
Also, there are no banners worth taking that your regular standard bearers cant already afford.
For the cost, I can see people running him as a CC hero to go in with Grave Guard, but I dont see him being mandatory in every list. He is better than Krell though 😛
Oh I agree but I’m making a Blood Dragon list themed around Bretonnians and Brets must have a Paladin as Bret Standard bearer thus wight with Battle standard to represent is the reason I’m taking it otherwise yes make him CC based and lop peoples heads off.
Sounds really good actually. I’m going to be running Blood Knights in most lists with a vamp hero on barded nightmare. I can easily see a Cav-heavy list doing really well in this book. I’m liking the idea of quick and mobile VC list with lost of tarpits and few hounds. Lets us know how your list works… As for me, I’m still looking for Sisters of Battle transfer sheets so I can make a War of the Roses/Villains of Shakespeare’s History Plays army
Dare I say Banshees are amazing? 😉 Especially when combined with a Vampire with -1LD for the enemy… that one point does actually make a difference. Also, they can “shoot” into close combat IIRC, and have quite a good movement. A bit like Hexwraiths: Situational, but with high potential.
Wraiths: I mainly use mine to lead Zombie Hordes. It gives them a little more LD, and the enemy something annoying to gnaw on. Causing Terror does come nin handy every now and again, but ultimately I find that Wraiths increase the tar pit nature of Zombies a lot (50 Zombies with Standard/Musician and Wraith hero costs 220pts, and is able to hold off much mire expensive units)
Wight Lords: I also don´t see the point in using them as BSBs, and I never do. In a unit of Grave Guard with the Banner of the Barrows, they are pretty decent. With the Nightshroud, they become great in challenges. T5 W3 at hero level are really good, and I´ve never been disapointed when I used one so far.
Not sure about the Ghoul King, apart from it being a cool model. A must for certain fluff armies (and isn´t he the onl yone who can ride a Terrorgheist? Can´t actually remember at the moment)
I like the idea of leavin out a Vampire Lord, and just go for Heroes – even the basic Vampire is better than the regular generals of other armies, so that sounds like a valid option. Will have to try that one of these days!
